55”/ 65” OLED TV

I’ve been looking for a good deal on an LG OLED 55 but am now considering a 65… I can’t believe the price jump! It’s nearly $2000aud! America the jump between the two is $1500aud and here it is $2000aud.

America
55” - $1600USD ($2110AUD)
65” - $2700USD ($3560AUD)

Australia
55” - $2495AUD ($1890USD)
65” - $4490AUD ($3390USD)

Difference in cost between 55” & 65”
$1,450AUD ($1100USD) In the States
$1995AUD ($1510USD) In Aus

Anyway it is what it is… what I’m basically saying is I can’t afford the 65” as it is $1995AUD more expensive than the 55” which seems bland. I’m sitting about 9 feet away from my TV (don’t even own one yet), is it worth getting an LG C7 55”, ive heard this is too far to sit for that size to really benefit or can someone recommend another future proof 65” TV that is below the $2500 mark. Also I don’t want a Hisense…

  • The thing about OLED isn't as much the panel but more so what's going on in the innards. You could choose a larger TV, however other aspects of the PQ aren't going to be as good as the OLED panel, I.E; viewing angles, response times, black levels, contrast etc. It depends on how much you care about those things as to whether size or overall PQ would be the determining factor, but IMO if you put the OLED 55 against a 65 LCD, I'd suggest you'd be inclined to choose the OLED.

I'd suggest a X9300E, as IMO, it's the only LCD that competes with OLED ATM but it's limited in terms of viewing angles, which is something that is echoed in all the reviews I've read.

With the prices that OLED TV's are slowly dropping to, I'm waiting until they start to become more affordable and bite the bullet, because the jump in PQ between OLED and LCD is fairly big, but as you say it's just the cost that presents the major setback ATM.

I hope that helps, I know it's a bit rambling. I think a lot of people are in the same position, I guess it's just a question of finding something that you like the look of. Checking out reviews is also a good idea to get your head around what's decent and what's not.

"but IMO if you put the OLED 55 against a 65 LCD, I'd suggest you'd be inclined to choose the OLED"

I fully agree with this. I have an LG OLED 55, plus one of the 65" X9300s from the Ebay 18% off deal. The 65" is a great everyday TV and also my main gaming TV and a fabulous example of what can be done with LCD technology, but it still isn't as good as the OLED. For UHD movies I'll stick with the OLED even if its a bit smaller. If the size bothers you just sit a bit closer.

  • The LG 65" has been as low as $3590: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/343849

I'll get one as soon as it hits $3000.

  • I'm in the exact same boat as you, tossing up between the 55 and 65. I don't think going for any other TV is worth it from the research i've done. I'm going to bite the bullet and get the 65 but entirely depends on your room, what you're using it for, how much you're using it etc to see if it's worth justifying the purchase for yourself.

Pricing is just one of those things, unfortunately it's not linear. The 75" goes for over 30k i think?

  • It's crazy the price jump. I mean I've just moved from London where I barely watched TV to be honest. Was in a house share and had my ps4 hooked up to some naff Samsung 44". I showed my Aussie girlfriend (who I moved here with) the 55" OLED and she said it was far too big haha! She doesn't want anything to do with it at that price so we've agreed she wears a blindfold if sat in front of it. I mean if the 65" was $3000 I would get one but after buying EVERYTHING new, it's draining my pocket and I feel like I'm just going to wait for the 55" at $2000… When is Amazon going to drop to put the pressure on!?

  • Also thanks for the tips Jawanzar! Really helpful mate.

    • No worries at all. :)

Just remember those additional 10" (diagonally) increases the screen area by 40%, which helps explain a lot of the price hike. But it's still frustrating, I'm in a similar situation waiting for the 65" to get down to low 3k. Nearly all my viewing is at night in a fairly dark room and the washed out blacks on my current LCD are killing me.

Edit: Oh yeah definitely go the 65 if you're viewing from that distance…you'll never go back to a smaller screen!

  • So I got one from JB-HiFi 5% off but for some reason he was feeling generous and gave me the C7 for $2291.64 with free delivery.

    Pretty good deal I reckon

  • Same boat here too. What's drawing me towards Android TV is the experience I have with current tv. Sure it is a 2011 (Sony) tv and the "os" on it is pretty basic, but pretty much all of the apps it does have (even YouTube) started to give me "this app is unsupported" type messages even only a few years after buying it. My concern is similar happening with something other than Android. Thoughts?
