i also like to announce when i do things post comment

  • $4.50 RRP? Mustn't be very good…
Oh well, signed up anyway :)

    • -1

Oh yes the quality of things is only measurable by the price tag. Gosh…

      • Not by the price tag, by the recommended retail price :P
The thing is someone normally can only measure 'the quality of things' by using it and if it falls apart while doing some mountainous hiking that's not exactly great.

        • -5

What if I told you I am using it since two years?
What if I told you that the bag has seen three different climate zones?
What if I told that I have thrown it in the washing machine several times?
What if I told you that not everything which is low price is also bad quality?

          Would you still neg me?
Would you consider to change your view of the world?

If you own the bag you would not troll around here. But it is so easy to say "bad quality" without any proof.

        • +4

@PictureMeBroken: I can neg you if you like, you negged me.

Would you consider to change your view of the world?

          Well that escalated quickly.

What if I told you I am using it since two years?

I'd ask you how old you are. And why you were hiking at 2 years.

What if I told that I have thrown it in the washing machine several times?

I'd be disgusted that it wasn't more, you sound a lot older than 2.

What if I told you that the bag has seen three different climate zones?

Oh please, it just about sees three different climate zones in the washing process.

What if I told you that not everything which is low price is also bad quality

I know that. But I wouldn't depend on something worth this much. It's like only bringing away a 99c lightning/usb cable to charge your phone.

May I ask what you use this bag for? I was interested in it, but considering people only use it for their city strolling and to pack their lunch in, I think it wouldn't be amazing quality for mountain hiking.

These bags are utterly fantastic. It boggles me that they can be made and sold for such a low price.

I bought one in March this year for 3 euros and used it for 6 months while travelling around Europe.

The zippers still work great, none of the fabric has torn or ripped. It can carry 6 beers inside and has enough padding not to dig into your back.

      • Thank you for actually answering my question.

I might grab one based on your reasoning. May I ask whether they are cans, stubbies or bottles of beer though? It has a 10L capacity but I'm not exactly going to put 10 litres of water in there to test it.

Would it survive (your opinion) a harsh American winter? It will be snowing, cold and mountainous. Also planning to go on day trips to the grand canyon and such, would this be adequate?

        • Cans are easier, but bottles can work as well. Haven't tested with stubbies or longnecks yet ;)

          Here's a video of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMDcqvNgYIU

If you've got lots of warm weather gear, grab the bigger version of it.

        • @downhillmtbr: Lol I wasn't considering taking beer but now that you mention it ;)

I was just trying to get a real life size of the bag and it's room inside. So thanks for the link.

Btw all of my warm weather gear will be on me so that shouldn't be a problem :P

ditto. although seems like you need to visit the store to claim, so pointless to most.

The RRP isn't promising for quality, but for $0 it's worth the price :-)

  • Must collect prize, so freebie would have to be, too.

  • +1

Have it and it's perfect for a day walk around the city. Been using it for about 2 years now.

    • +1

Same mate, but you know: Haters gonna hate…

    • -1

Perfect for a day walk around the city

Maybe you and I have different ideas about hiking, but I would be quite alarmed if a backpack didn't last a day's city stroll.

      • Okay, so it's not big enough to bring everything for an overnight hike, but it's more than adequate for a day hike.

        • Thank you. Would you say a day mountaineering trip (ie all day, not just a few hours) would be adequate?

        • @pennypincher98:

They make a version twice the size and twice the price (6 euros) that would be a better option.

Having said that I've used this one for walks of ~8 hours and I prefer taking something smaller and lightweight.

        • @downhillmtbr: Hmm, might just keep with the smaller size as its free :D
Yeah I would prefer something smaller and lightweight, my walks shouldn't go longer than 8 hours and if they do, I'm lost lol.

      • Take it on a city stroll. Not sure where you read hiking from my post.

    • so if this is their first Aussie store, where did everyone get these packs 2 years ago? Was there some grand opening store OS, that everyone at OzB was invites too, except me?

      • First store in Australia. Melbourne store is slated for sometime in 2018.

They are a French company, with stores all around Europe and Asia (Maybe other areas as well?).

  • Do they deliver? Where is Tempe? Looks like a Sydney-centric thing, useless if you don't live in Sydney / Tempe.

    • -1

Useful if you live in Sydney.

    • Tempe is near Mascot, so not that far from the airport.

Quite a smart location to put it in, but kind of pointless even to North/West/South Sydney driving all the way there just to claim their free ($4.50 RRP) bag.
If they deliver, that could be a different story.

      • +1

Sure they deliver a free bag to your house, promoting their opening ceremony. Makes sense.

        • -1

Not sure if you are being sarcastic or not..
I'm assuming you're not that shallow, and are desperate to defend your bag.

Where's the proof? Says stock in Tempe, their only store. Why would they ship it to people outside of Sydney? Makes no sense as people won't go in store. Sure they might pick up a few online customers but CBA is not worth it. I can tell you now that there will be some (in reality, most) people that will claim their free bag and never go there again. That exponentially increases the further you are from the store.

        • @pennypincher98:

Not sure if you are being sarcastic or not..

You need a new sarcasm detector mate, PictureMeBroken's post was the most sarcastic thing I've read all day.

  • Have they started giving out the gift already or is it only on their official opening day (5th Dec)?

    • +2

Yep they were giving them out today.

      • thanks! Could choose from any colour?

        • +2

Yep they had 5 I think

        • @rocky7st:
I've just signed up but it doesn't bring me to any pages to choose a bag or add a bag to shopping cart. Can someone please provide the steps? Many thanks.

        • @karinkylee:

you need to claim it in-store

  • Done, hope it gets to victoria

  • most of their items not even in stock

  • +1

Awesome, had no idea they were coming to Australia. I used to go there all the time in Italy.

  • Does it mean I just need to sign up an account to get the free gift?

    • +1

Pretty sure you need to go in store to pick it up.

      • +1

Ah so the catch not mention anywhere in the post/t&c's

        • -1

You might find that detail in the title of the post.

        • @octagonalman: that it's pickup only?

  • Finally a Dec store in Australia.

Killing RebelSport's monopoly and selling items twice the normal retail price seems to be near it's end

    • Its very impressive the range of items they have at a very decent price. Will see how the quality is but at that price can't complain too much.

    • That is the first thing I thought when I landed in Australia, the monoply of Rebel sport is ridiculous and Decathlon would tear them apart.

They sell a mix of well-known brand at decent prices, but their strength is their own brands, developed in-house, very affordable and the quality is usually very good.

Most people in France only shop there for sports stuff, the range is just huge

      • I think they are more likely to rival Anaconda than Rebel.
Rebel sell licenced kits and products, and major "sport fashion" brands Such as Adidas and Nike. They also have outlets in major shopping centres all over the place.
Anaconda sell their own-brand products and selected better-known-but-not-household-name brands, which was much similar to what I saw in Decathlon today. It's not immediately obvious which is their own stuff and which is the brand name.
It would be a shame if they impacted Anaconda. I would prefer them to hit the business of Kathmandu, although that's not likely.

        • I’m not sure how much of their range they’ve brought in but they definitely have bullets to shoot at Kathmandu with their Quechua brand. Mountain gear, backpacks, polar fleece everything… and they have brands for everything, swimwear, tennis, soccer, cycling… they even make bikes which are pretty good

  • Once in the store, how do we get the bag?
Do we need to show membership proof or something? I haven't received the confirmation email the site says it's sent.

    • +1

Its done at checkout, they ask for your membership before scanning your purchases then give you the gift after. As I brought something I don't know if you can just get the gift however there is nothing in the email saying you have to buy something.

      • Ok, thanks.
Guess I just have to wait for my email to come through then.

        • +1

They'll help you out in store if it hasn't. They were signing up everyone they could at the door yesterday.

  • I picked up one and then got given another at the checkout as a gift. The “gift” variant has a Decathlon Australia logo printed on it. I’ll probably make sure I use it on my next o/s trip…

They seem a bit lightly built but time will tell how well they last.

  • Just picked up my bags.

  • Decathlon concept looks interesting

You can test most of the items. Return it if you dont like 365 days. 2yr warranty.

They have outdoor football, basketball, table tennis and trampoline for kids to try.
You can ride bikes, try the scooter and skateboards, indoor table tennis and badminton area.

  • Collected my bag today. Store is massive, feels like a Kmart to me. Definitely over staffed for a Wednesday afternoon.
