Amazon Australia Launched (Was: Amazon Showing Recommended Products with Prices)

Update: Amazon Australia has turned the switch at around 2AM AEST on 5 Dec 2017. This thread will be used for all discussions related to Amazon Australia's launch event.

Logged into my Amazon Australia account today and noticed their "Your Recommendations" section was showing products + pricing.

From what I can see (not much) - the Nintendo Switch will be $399, Fifa 18 on PS4 will be $39, a white PS4 500gb will be $399.

  • Should we be giving Amazon chance to get it right? I mean they just finally started here anw so I'm sure there are a lot of kinks to sort out. Don't get me wrong but I'm one of you guys who is disappointed with this but also don't forget that Amazon will not just stand still and let it run like this. I was holding off some shopping pending Amazon to come online but it looks like I'm going to buy it from somewhere else. Oh well..

The company is worth a trillion dollars and took YEARS to come here, YEARS AND YEARS, it's nearly 2018, they should've been here 5+ years ago.

      They should've researched this.

  • +5

I don't get why anyone is defending Amazon. It's 2017 not 1997! How many years have they had to get it right and with all the experience and knowledge from launching in previous countries. How can they mess up so badly? Do they deserve a second chance? Nope. Should have launched on Black Friday with some amazing launch deals. Instead we get…this.

    • +3

^^^^^^^^^ Delay it 12 MONTHS (!) and do it right, don't half-ass it.

They're RICH and they couldn't get the prices right, the shipping time, the variety? WTF?

    • lol, stop pretending like you won't be rushing to the site as soon as it has cheap prices.

      • +3

Judging by the launch. They won't. Not even close on the tech items I purchase.

  • Will most items on amazon.com come to amazon Australia there is one item I'm waiting for to save on astronomical postage charges.

    • +1

Based on what we have so far, it seems to be pointing to a big fat NOPE.

      They'll use local suppliers.

  • +2

Everyone seems to be hating on it right now but I placed an order for 2 games Chibi-Robo!: Zip lash with amiibo and Picross 3D: Round 2 for $6 and $16 and Paid $8 for shipping. So a $10 game and a $20 basically. I placed my order Tuesday morning and I've already received my items. I didn't even pay for the faster more expensive shipping so I'm quiet impressed. Normal businesses over here I'd have to wait 3-4 days minimum. JB has picross 2 at $49 and eb has it at $36. I think everyone just needs to wait for them to have a sale to be happy and not expect the prices to be amazing at all times. Even in USA the prices fluctuate from good to bad.

I can imagine how u would get speedy shipping when no one is shopping there due to the disappointment

  • +3

It would be really clever marketing if someone said they would price match (or beat) any price found on the new Amazon website.

  • I should have added this to my signature

Had zero expectations for Amazon. The main thing I wanted out of this was a competitive environment that was going to drive local hyper inflated prices down and we saw this 2-3 weeks prior to their launch with good discounts across ebay.

Now that this juggernaut is seen as the facade it was we're now going to have a draught of really good deals.

Everytime an international online company has huge hype coming to Australia, all we ever get is its annoying cousin.

Give it time. I suspect the sales will be big and they need time to stock their inventory and create distribution channels

forget Amazon Marketplace sellers, its like ebay, they need to pay a margin to Amazon, and just like ebay, it inflates the price.
wait for "Amazon" direct to compete, like Nintentdo Switch, Brick and Mortar shop is now price matching at $400.

      • +1

Wait what? The switch was one sale before amazon launched at big w, for $360… so don’t see how amazon did anything in that regard

  • +5

Pretty shit prices for electronics so far. Very disappointed.

  • +2

I'm so disapointed with the result, I'm not even browsing the site for stuff, I'll leave it to others to post here, IF anything worthwhile is ever put up there. As it stands, I suspect little will, for many months.

  • Amazon Prime is now on Apple TV

  • As stated earlier the retailers set the price. To me it seems they deliberately set prices as non competative to kill off Amazon. Quite clever if you ask me.

    • +2

Kill off Amazon? You mean a multi billion dollar company who would have done plenty of due diligence before entering the Australian market? Sounds legit.

      • Yea your right kill off was a bad choice of words, I meant to imply it is the Aust market trying a last ditch attempt.

      • I reckon it might happen… Something will, don't know how but I very much doubt they'll dominate here.
Old Gerry don't seem to worried, he and others would have done plenty of due diligence before Amazon entered.

        • I think Gerry is worried, hence he has been in the news at least once a week for the last couple months trying to show how "un-Australian" amazon is and how it will be the demise of the "aussie battler".

Regardless, someone is going to lose in all this, i just cant see it being Amazon unless Australians turn super patriotic and pay a higher price for the retail workers of Australia.

        • @adam456: Yeah maybe, even if he wasn't worried though he'd still have to make some sort of case and put himself out there? It'd be stupid not to.
Thing is, if prices become what was expected sure it would probably happen. Why isn't it happening though? I'm not really following it, just hearing people complaining and it doesn't surprise me.
I just hope it works out well for the Australian consumer, we've been getting ripped for years.

        • @adam456: I reckon there will be pats on backs and hands in pockets to keep Amazon down here.

        • +1

          @OneMoreTune: agreed ^

        • @adam456: For the above comment, I got ya. Haha the timing.

Although Amazon has cocked their launch up, don't write them off yet.

Prime will come. Lower prices will come - basically if they don't, they have no future in Australia.

    • +3

A company like Amazon does not come into Australia without an in depth business plan which they probably spent a good few years putting together about how to dominant the Australian market. They have billions at their disposal to make sure that eventually, people use the service over purchasing from any other site.

      • +1

Yep. I don't know what their business plan was/is and I'm no expert on retail strategy but I'd be very surprised if what has been offered up this week is the best they are going to do. Bezos is the real deal and I'm sure he doesn't like to lose.

My opinion is that Amazon AU in 2018 will be very different from Amazon AU in 2017.

        • +1

I agree….. I haven't even seen any advertising from Amazon. It feels like Softlaunch 2.0

I honestly think deals and specials will come in the new year that will get people shopping heavily on there. Look at the pricing on video games. 39 bucks for FIFA is unreal, so they're clearly trying to build that consumer sentiment in their brand.

Once they have us comfortable with the "cheap prices" amazon offers, we wont even care that some items are full price. For pure convenience (especially with a prime subscription) you would rather just pay the full price knowing you'll have it borderline immediately, all through one system and one click.

Anyone here works or know anyone who works at an Amazon distribution centre in Australia? Wonder how big it is and how many people they hired for the launch.

I remember reading an article long ago how Amazon distribution workers Germany or something have to walk heaps of kms a day just to scan the barcode.

  • dicksmith needed to be scared, not

  • customer service and shipping has been great so far, two day shipping and response within half an hour for a product issue

Merged from Impact of Amazon on eBay Deals

So, with at the recent Amazon launch in Australia we've seen that the hype isn't real - it isn't what a lot of people anticipated in regards to how cheap some items will be and how much impact it would have on local or online retailers.

Do you think this will have an impact on eBay deals we have seen in the past few months? Will we be seeing less and less of those deals?

  • +3

It might turn out that Amazon AU isn't for the OzBargain crowd at all. It may be for everybody else that just wants to go to a single portal to buy something with the knowledge that they're getting an honest price. I think it is going to tick those boxes. I know there are plenty of times I just don't have the time to faff about looking for the best deal - this is when I will use Amazon.

    • That's probably the same for all deals. Ozbargain crowd skims the top 5% of the deals from most merchants. The remainder is just for the 95% 'uneducated' masses who ironically make it possible for us to grab great deals.

If life was fair and customer loyalty actually meant something (other than an advertising tool) we wouldn't be getting any good deals.

  • think they will bother with boxing Day sales ? amazon US shipping Prices are UP !

What’s actually interesting about Amazon is being a platform that allows smaller players to compete with the bigger brands.

An example is Anker products, which launched as a brand selling accessories exclusively on Amazon. Everything was shipped from China directly to Amazon's fulfilment centres, and from there directly to customers. Anker did not need to setup their own warehouses in countries which they operate in. And yes, there are Anker products on Amazon AU.

Items located in an Amazon fulfilment centre utilise Amazion's warehouse logistics, so will ship quickly.
