Just Launched: Official Browser Extension for Price Hipster with Support for Amazon.com.au

Hey OzBargainers,

A few of you already know since I hinted at this when you bumped into me in Rocket League (hah!)

I've been working on a browser extension for Price Hipster. It's still a work in progress but I wanted to let you know about it now so you can make use of it with the newly-launched Amazon.com.au.

It does some things you would expect: show price history on product pages, allow setting price alerts, compare prices (coming soon). There are also some other things in the works to make it even better.

At the moment it works on these websites, with more to come:

  • Big W
  • Bunnings
  • Coles
  • David Jones
  • Harvey Norman
  • JB Hi-Fi
  • Myer
  • Target
  • The Good Guys
  • Woolworths
  • Amazon.com.au

Let me know what you think!

Everything seems to have gone pretty smooth installing, logging in, and checking a few pages. Will let you know if anything pops up :)

    • Awesome! Thanks for letting me know it works (phew!).

Thumbs up for having Amazon AU products on launch day!

Can someone briefly explain how it works, do you get an additional bar show up when you visit a product page?

    • On supported websites there will be a thin bar at the top of the page. You will get some special powers if the extension detects a product on the page.

  • Merged from Price Hipster's Browser Extension Gets OzBargain Superpowers!

    Hey all!

You're gonna love this. Now you can one-click share products to OzBargain from their websites. There's a new option in the Price Hipster browser extension to "Share to OzBargain", which pre-fills the product's details for you in the deal submission page on ozbargain.com.au.

Also, whenever a link to a product on Price Hipster is found by the extension, it inserts a price history chart inline. To see an example of what I'm talking about have a look at the extension page below.

    Here it is!

BONUS: Come back to this page when you have the extension installed and you'll see a price history chart inlined below. Magic!

Oh, and let me know if you have any feedback or suggestions for the extension. It's a work in progress!

Also, I'd like to hear about any bugs you encounter.

Not feedback about the extension (I use Safari), but a big thing that stops me from enjoying Price Hipster as much as I otherwise would is the inability to filter the fashion section into male/female. As a male, I don't have a particular interest for the women's clothing and so most of my daily email is wasted by the inclusion of women's clothes.

Adding this feature would be awesome!

Thanks for taking the time to offer this feedback. I completely agree with you. It's part of planned improvements for the coming year.

        • Can you please also add to 'the list' some filter options for the Daily Alert emails? I also do not want to see women's clothing on sale, which is apparently happening waaaaay too often.

          • @sky blu: How do you envision that would work?

          • @sky blu: @jazoom: As above you said it's part of the planned improvements for next year, so i'd think that once you are able to filter through the results (i.e. mens/womens clothing) on pricehipster main website, you should also be able to add that option to the Daily Email alert? Furthermore it would be even better if the "interests" can be tailored for the Daily Alert too.

          • @sky blu: @sky blu: Thank you for the explanation.

The daily deals email is already dictated by the selected interests. If there aren't enough deals found for a user's interests then some products from other categories may appear in the email.

It seems that if the interests can be a bit more specific (increasing the number of categories) that will solve this issue for you. Is that correct?

          • @sky blu: @jazoom: Yes, correct.

@sky blu: @sky blu: Thanks for the confirmation. It will be one of the focuses next year. :-)

    • It's me again! Good stuff on the Chrome Extension! It integrates nicely.

I think it would be cool if we can toggle the "PriceHipster Extentions Top Bar" (the top bar) to be visible on demand. This would help users whose devices' are fighting for vertical real estate to not feel as invasive for general browsing.

As an example, when I visit BIG W's website, the price hipster icon will show a badge (perhaps an exclaimation mark or a number?) suggesting that this website is a pricehipster extension supported website (I know Big W is one of them) and if I click on it, it will slide the top bar down. Ideally this "top bar on/off"setting will be sticky for a browsing session or even persistent if possible.

      • Hey thanks for the suggestion. This is actually something I will be reassessing soon since I have to make some changes around it for other reasons as well.

My concern is that is there's nothing in the user's face to show them a page is supported then they won't even know to look. The goal is to have hundreds of stores supported. What are your thoughts on this? Maybe allow people to change a setting if they want to hide it by default?

        • Here are some suggestions to show a supported page to the user's face

The least invasive appraoch - include a badge with exclaimation mark on the pricehipster icon
The slightly more invasive appraoch - overlay on the page but kept to a minimum via
          - a thinner and slightly transparent top bar which expands on hover
          - a small box or circle (fixed) on the top right hand corner of the viewport (hidden on mobiles) also slightly transparent which expands on hover
          - you get the idea etc…

Yeah I think allowing users to change the "on/off" setting would be good

          • @frankfu1122: You might be underestimating the degree of "in the user's face" you need for them to realise something is there. After developing apps for 3 years and now websites for 4 years I'm still surprised by the questions I get about things that I thought (erroneously) were obvious. I agree with the general idea, especially on smaller devices. I'll keep in mind your suggestions and try to come up with something that will be good for everyone. I'm thinking of some kind of hybrid approach.

Once I make a change I'd love to hear what you think about it again!

          • @frankfu1122: @jazoom: I agree with you. There are all kinds of users with varying degrees of "smart" so making assumptions could have dire consequences. Maybe the default setting can be the "obvious" mode and the alternative setting can be the "less obvious" approach?

I'll be waiting for your next release!

          • @frankfu1122: @frankfu1122: My original plan was to have it not even show up except when a valid product was found but early user feedback made it clear that that was confusing. I'll see what I can come up with. :-)

    • Is it possible for you to add products to your database when someone views a product page with the extension active?

For example, this Skylanders Imaginators Starter Pack is not in your database.
So if I were to visit the page, the extension knows it's a product page, would check the database and if it cannot find it, it adds the product to the database.

      • Hey that's a good question. It's possible and that is actually how it works on Amazon. The problem with doing that more generally is it could cause conflicts with the rest of the data. Consider if that was added while you were on the page but not found by the crawler for some reason, it'll never be seen again until you go back to that exact page. It's not the ideal solution.

  • A few of you already know since I hinted at this when you bumped into me in Rocket League (hah!)

That would be me, shame we threw the match discussing PH lol. Just got the extension, looks great so far.

    • Awesome :-)

  • OP, it seems the Chrome extension is no longer available? Getting a 404 error when I try the link in this post, and unable to find it when searching available extensions.

    • Yup, that's true. It's a project I might get back to at some point, but unfortunately it's not up at the moment. Both Chrome and Firefox made some policy changes that meant I had to re-do some things, but I didn't have time to.

      • Thanks for the quick reply. For what the feedback may be worth, I was using it as my default way to check price history for items. I never really used the web page but tried that now and see it's easy enough to get the same info there, so no big loss if you don't have time to bring back the extension.

        Kudos on your work.

        • I might get the extension going again some day. There are a few other things I want to improve first though.

          • @jazoom: any chance on open-sourcing it and letting the community contribute?

            • @SimBech: Unlikely. That would actually create a lot more work for me.

              • @jazoom: Just chiming in appreciation for the website - keeping it live, even if updates are less frequent - still super helpful when you think you have a "deal" on an item, then realize its frequently on sale (cough-"House"-cough). Used it plenty of times for all sorts of items.
                Thanks!

@Oipjo: Thanks mate. I have thought about whether it's worth my time to keep running but comments like this encourage me to keep it going.
