Speaking of ethics... what do you/would you do

Inspired by the post about getting money deposited in your bank, and what would you do, I'm curious about what people would do in certain circumstances…

1) I refunded an item to Myer once, they went to refund me the full RRP instead of what I paid, about $150 extra. I instantly told them they were over paying me. Didn't even think to keep it but as I walked home I regretted it lol A part of me felt bad for the cashier in case they got in trouble for it but the other part of me figured Myer is just a huge corporation that messed up and I would've been the innocent benefactor.

I always correct cashiers when they give me the wrong change, it's not even a thought. But I dunno, I felt different about Myer…or maybe i just wanted a freebie haha

Do you correct cashiers? Or only small businesses vs big business?

2) My loan has multiple splits with offsets. This year saw multiple interest hikes but i realised recently the biggest loan split wasn't victim to the last hike (0.2%). I moved my offset funds out and have no intent of telling the bank.

Would you? (I still will not despite any answers)

3) I've always shared my savings with friends on things/activities I buy for us. Eg if getting 10% off tickets i share the discount. Recently I've been getting a little annoyed that I can often spend a lot of time trying to get things cheaper for everyone and they just get a free ride. Some things are easy, just a promo code, but other things can take a decent amount of effort. I've been debating recently whether I should start giving myself a bigger chunk of the saving for my efforts. What do you do?

    1. Its not about about whether its a big corporations or not, its about my morals and ethics. I don't like to cheat people.

    2. Can't comment, don't have house loan, and haven't researched offset accounts and the like.

    3. I understand that one a bit. I went on a holiday with a friend this year, I spent ages planning, researching, and working on this holiday, literally hundreds of hours. Got the holiday down to about $6k each for 4.5 weeks in Europe, that's all flights and accommodation, good airlines and nice hotels in convenient and good locations. I really considered keep the discounts to myself, as in claiming it for her too and putting the discount amount to my balance, I easily could have since she trusted me to book and pay for the holiday and she just transferred into my account what I said she owed. But refer back to point 1 for what I did.
Even though I did ALL the work for the holiday, like I said hundreds of hours (seriously try and book a holiday using airlines like Emirates, KLM, Lufhansta, etc and hotels that are cheap, in close proximity to attractions, in safe areas, with close by public transport, its not easy), it's not in me to cheap others, especially my friends.

This year I booked another holiday for some friends, I just said I will book the holiday for they and save them heaps of money and work, but I will charge them a very small fee for the honour. Or instead of the fee they can pay HALF of the difference between what a travel agent can do it for, and what I can get it for. Either way they are ahead. Still my friends after all.

    1. Myer is going down down to bankruptcy so I would also feel bad for them.

    2. Banks deserve no sympathy.

    3. Your boss should be the one getting annoyed as you are probably looking for discounts on his dollar.

The general rule IMO is that you can be a bit sly, but don't complain when it comes back to bite you.

    In other words:

    1) Don't complain when they realise their mistake and want their money back.

    2) Don't complain when the bank pulls you up on it.

    3) Don't complain when you have no friends.

  • It's the circle of cheating, a business cheats you so you find a way to cheat them or someone else will cheat them and they will do the same, In the end it all comes out even. Banks and department stores such as Myer rip off people everyday with inflated prices and phony sales so don't feel bad about it. As for you friends I did the same but after a while some would just say thanks or not even take up the offer and then buy it later on for a higher price. In the end if they don't appreciate your effort then it's not worth your time which has the highest value in itself.

    1. if it's an online order, it not going to take much to find you. or myer rewards card.
    2. it's up you if you want to money money from different account. (unless course the bank, has restrictions if the money can be moved)
    3. maybe people go you because you can get a better deal on things. maybe you think your time not appreciated?
  • Had this recent opportunity presented to me… picking up a cellarmasters order at a BWS recently and even though email and text messages said item (penfolds St Henri 2pk in wooden box) was ready to pick up, this young staff member couldn't find it. I'd had problems before with this at the store and had driven half an hour to pick up the item, so just wanted my order fulfilled.

Told the staff member what I'd ordered, and she found a wooden box of St Henri out back and brought it to me ready to sign off. It was a box of 6 bottles - $600 worth (my order was $200rrp). I did momentarily consider taking it but just couldn't in the end. Not so much for Woolworths' sake, but for the kid (who did their best for service recovery) - The ramifications are much greater for their work and future.

So, morally I could justify a big corporation taking the loss, but don't want the little guys to get hurt. I'm definitely not as good as I could be though…

    1. Eh, if I remember when I'm there (so not walking back), if it's a huge amount, if I'm in the mood. I'm pretty ambivalent and have done both. (Though getting wrong change back I would correct, getting wrong refund amount back less likely).

    2. Completely fine. No way to know if that's even a mistake or deliberate.

    3. Yeah - that's not even debatable - if you're paying $N between X people then each person pays N/X. Discount or not is irrelevant, otherwise are you going to lie to them about how much something cost?

  • 1) take it
    2) take it
    3) don't be tight to friends and family

  • 1 - No
    2 - No
3 - Maybe - Yet to organise something
