Recommendation for Work From Home Set Up

My partner is a lawyer who works for himself. He spends long hours at the desk and uses his laptop for everything. I think he'd love a proper work set up, e.g. two monitors and a height adjustable standing desk.

I'd love some recommendations for everything he might need so I can get it for him for Christmas and have it all installed with no hassle to him. I did some Googling but got very confused. For example, what is a good work monitor, do I need monitor arms, do I need a dock, what cables do I need, is Variedesk the best (and easiest to install) height adjustable standing desk to go on top of the one he has now, etc?

In case it makes any difference his laptop is a Lenovo Thinkpad (bought with an Ozbargain deal of course).

Any advice would be really appreciated. Given it's a work investment, happy to pay for good quality stuff. Thank you so much.

  • i use one of these https://au.varidesk.com/en-au/home?utm_source=Sparcmedia&utm…

there's enough real estate for a couple of monitors easily

  • +2
  • i have dual monitors sitting on boxes/books to get the heights right, so a monitor arm is not required - but nicer.
i dont know what a dock is - is that to stick the laptop in to run on the monitors? probably hdmi cables but will depend on your monitors (could be display port). whatever you can find as outputs from the laptop and inputs on the monitor.

  • If you get a high resolution monitor then you should be able to get by with one, and it is a much better aesthetic overall. Remember he has the laptop screen as well, and you can buy a nice stand for the laptop so he can use that in conjunction with the monitor if he wants to.

My recommendation would be this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/347032#comment-5373031

It is Lenovo brand and will work perfectly with his Thinkpad (provided it is a recent model), good size and high resolution. It is not heigh adjustable, so will need to stack it on boxes/books if it isn't quite right.

I wouldn't bother with standing desk personally. I prefer to sit and work normally.

  • Docks are great if he travels to see clients a lot.
Obviously just plug the lap top into the dock when at home and no fussing with cables again.
Make sure you get the correct dock for his laptop.

  • get a 16:10 ratio displays

  • Docks are good as you can hide the laptop under the desk and use the big screens. I'd use a USB to HDMI adaptor to get the second monitor from the laptop, assuming it has a built in monitor out port as well. It may very well have VGA and HDMI out built into it.

  • Also consider wireless keyboard and mouse - this will keep the desk much cleaner. Don't go cheap though as these tend to have a little lag. I love my logitech m590 mouse! A small usb hub connected to the dock will make sure that he still has free usb slots on the laptop.
