Optus Data Sim: 140GB, $52.50mth (1yr Contract)

1330

EDIT:
Okay so I talked to a 2nd Live Chat who has informed me the deal starts on the 9/12, so tomorrow. Apparently the first one has no clue about anything.
LIVE Chat is telling me the discount is unavailable at the moment and might be a technical glitch.

Optus currently has 25% off the $70 a month plan for 140gb of data, new services and online only.

The ipad also have the same deal however its for 100gb of data,
Ipad 5th Gen ($52.5 per month)

        • @Deebs: ah k ye cool…i get the idea. why drain 2 batteries when you can drain one. Ye i guess it's great for commuters. Would you use it for general browsing? because obviously with Optus you already get Unmetered music streaming and unmetered Netflix and Stan. IDK for me right now i dont see the value, but i do appreciate you throwing me some knowledge!

        • +1

@andrgram: I use it most for streaming netflix/youtube/spotify and also a bit of general browsing like ozbargain or reddit.

        • @Deebs: how do you combine it with your existing optus account? I cant see anything to relate to my existing account in the checkout?

        • @gutenmuach: Sorry bud didn't see your message until today but if you haven't done it, I assume its just on the same account or contact live chat.

  • This is great. I'm with belong $55 a month paying for 100GB data.

How would someone connect it to their modem/router as main home wifi? Would it be a good alternative to Belong adsl2+?

    • Very easy, you can get a router with a USB 4G inlet or a sim enabled modem/router. Would be worth doing if you want more data and aren't happy with the speeds. Test the speeds in your house a with 4G Optus sim and then switch if you're happy.

  • I have a Telstra branded Netgear Nighthawk M1 Mobile Router sitting unopened in a cupboard.

Does anyone know if the Optus sim from this deal would work in it?

    • +1

If you mean is the modem locked to Telstra, you'd have to test that for yourself - borrow an Optus or Vodafone SIM from someone and see if it complains.

If you mean does the Netgear have all the same frequency bands as Optus, probably not. It probably has Telstra specific firmware. It will probably still WORK, just might be slower than it could be (and depending on what capability your local towers have too) with an Optus modem, which could in turn be slower than another Optus modem with a higher 'cat' (category) level.

e.g. The AC800S is their latest pocket wifi with the 'best'/highest cat ability right now. The 5573 (something like that) has a lower cat level. But again, not all areas support all cat levels. And house-modems you'd have to research each one. I spent days trying to work out what category my local tower supported, gave up, and just bought the modem with the best cat level I could find and stopped worrying about it.

      • Thanks for taking the time to reply, I do appreciate it.

        • You're welcome. I know it gave me a headache going through it all several months ago.

  • Ahh… signed iPad Pro 12.9 2 months ago. Anyway to get Optus to reduce my monthly payment?

  • So can i just stick this in a phone and use data that way and hotspot to my laptop.

    • yep

  • Would this pocket wifi suit this deal?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/347250

  • deal is gone? I can't see the 25% discount anymore? dammit!

    • Are you looking at the 12 month plans (the one with the 25% discount) or month to month? By default it seems to show the month to month plans.

  • Hhmm sorry can anyone help, how do i get the discount to show? Thank you.

    • +1

Try a different PC or incognito window. Seems to work for me at the moment.

      • legend! incognito window worked for me!! thanks so much.

      • Works. So getting an ipad is a better deal? Although you have to sign up for 24 months but price is way cheap

        • seems to be a 12 month contract but the price is guaranteed for 24 months?

  • Is it still there?

    • Are you looking at the 12 month plans (the one with the 25% discount) or month to month? By default it seems to show the month to month plans.

  • Anyone know how i can link it my existing optus account? I cant see any option.

    • I think you have to do that via online chat.

    • The first one is $35 at kmart, though there's limited stock and the second one can be used as a wifi extender. From what I've read they're pretty much the same and are the best cheaper modems.

If you want one that is more expensive but gets better speed/connection the netgear AC800s is the way to go but its around $200. I'm going to get the MF920V.

      • Yeah has anyone got a link for the best price to the ac800s? http://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/mobile-broadband/netg…

        • haven't been able to find it anywhere else other than optus (website, store I went to in hurstville didn't stock it), apparently ebay sometimes.

        • I looked at all these modems months ago before signing up. I knew the AC800S was supposed to be coming out so I waited another month, but it didn't again and couldn't wait any longer so I got the E5876. Anyway, there was a reason I didn't get the 920 even though mine was a lot more expensive… I forget the reason now, so look carefully at the specs/features. And obviously a $30 modem is probably going to be a lesser 'cat' level (slower speed) than the AC800S.

        • OH - and pocket wifis often have carrier-specific firmware that matches each telco's frequency bands. So if you're looking on ebay or buying from overseas to save money, make sure you're either buying one for the correct telco, and/or has firmware that supports the correct Australian frequencies/bands you'll be on.

    • The first one is also $45 at Target and has free home delivery (though I think that will end at midnight, 11 December).

  • Can you use a old android phone as the wifi modem?

    • +1

If the phone has hotspot capability, then yes. I did so for several months. Only thing is your phone may not have the fastest 'cat' ability. It will still work, just maybe not as fast as say a new AC800S for example. Oh - and th phone mustn't be locked to Telstra, etc.

      • Thanks for that.

  • Hi,
I was just wondering if i purchased this deal and wanted to use it as my home internet (my current one is atrocious) would i be able to do so?

Also what router/modem should I use with this if I did end up using it for everything around the house.

I was tossing up between the Huawei E5816 and the newer AC800s Netgear.
I was wondering what the differences would be and which one would be better suited for PC/computer usage. As i know the E5816 has Ethernet ports which probably is better for computers but would anyone be able to verify this?

Overall which one of the two or if any other router/modem will be best for everyday use around the house especially for GAMING on PC.

    • +1

Home internet - yes - I do. You'd have to look up your usage stats with your current ISP and check you're usually below the 100/140GB limit. Keep in mind mobile broadband counts both up AND down data.

I download a few torrents per week, watch a lot of youtube (on the lowest setting just to be safe unless it's something I can't see properly then I notch it up), browse ebay and gumtree quite a lot, and email.

I don't know the E5816. Check it has all the right bands Optus uses, and what 'cat' version it is. I can confirm the AC800S covers all of this, along with having the latest cat version.

Ethernet isn't necessary. I'm using an E5876 with a micro USB cable connected to my laptop for internet, and wifi to my phone. I've also used wifi for the laptop but not for a few months. Because the cable also keeps the pocket wifi charged. The wifi isn't the bottleneck… internet speed is.

If it's only for around the house you could use a home modem. I think someone else mentioned it in this thread, it has software/firmware you can install to do various things like set a data usage limit. If you plan to use the internet away from home, I'd just get the AC800S. It covers everything, has external antenna sockets if you want a speed or reliability boost, and like my E5876 you can connect it via a magnetic cable like this: www.ebay.com.au/itm/272474977145 - to quickly disconnect and drop it in one pocket and your phone in the other. Then you have internet everywhere you go, and if you have a bluetooth car stereo, you can stream music from the wifi, to the phone, to the car stereo. (IF you're one of the lucky ones that gets unmetered iheart data to work.)

Gaming I know little about. But voice calls do take priority on the network. So if its getting saturated, gaming pings would certainly increase. And an external antenna might help if they're not acceptable to begin with.

      • Thank you very much for the comprehensive reply. For the Ac800s can it connect wired via a micro usb to my PC? Would this basically act in place of an ethernet cable? I've heard rumors about ethernet cable being up to 10 times more reliable compared to wifi network.

Would the micro USB connecting the Ac800 to the computer act in place of an ethernet cable connecting from my router to my PC using Cable internet?

        Again thank you so much!

        • Hm… I can see the socket in pictures, but 'm having trouble finding what kind of cable it uses. It doesn't look like a micro USB. But it does take SOME kind of cable, because that's how it charges the internal battery. And you can connect to a computer that way via a USB 2/3 port. (So if you wanted to get a magnetic cable, just find out for sure and then buy the cable.)

I have a E5876 pocket wifi with a micro USB socket. And that magnetic cable I linked to has a male micro USB plug at one end, and a normal male USB plug at the other end that connects to my laptop USB 2.0/3.0 port/s. When I first plugged it in, Windows 7 automatically recognised and set it up in a few seconds, without me installing anything. Same thing happens if I plug it into a different USB port - it sets it up again for that port. (You can see an icon spinning telling you it's installing.) So I expect anything from Win 7 up should be the same.

Yes, the cable (whatever type it does use) will charge the battery; provide internet access to a computer via it's USB port (and/or via wifi); and probably allow you to transfer files from the computer to the internal memory of the modem too. I think it allows 15 devices to connect in total. Or you could plug the modem into an external modem/router if for example the external modem/router had a better wifi range, or allowed more connections, than the AC800S itself.

I download and oonvert youtube clips to mp4 files, use bittorrent a lot… I don't have any problems with speed/reliability that I'm aware of, using that magnetic cable. I guess if you had several devices connected, the cable would be more 'solid' a connection than a wifi one. But unless you're mining bitcoins or processing missile codes for Don. Trump to shoot at CNN, I doubt most people would notice any difference, LOL.

Someone else suggested this: https://www.4gltemall.com/huawei-e5186-4g-cat6-802-11ac-lte-… - and said it's faster than my E5876. Obviously not portable though.

Can't decide for you, but I hope that's what you meant. If I wanted portable and had the choice today, I'd buy the AC800S instead of the E5876 I have. I only got it because they said for several months the AC800S was 'due out soon'.

        • @GregMonarch:

Thanks again for the indepth reply.

yeah I actually meant the Huawei E5186 I guess in terms of use personally I want to use it for mainly PC/home use so probably the Huawei E5186 might be better suited.

Then again the Ac800s does use CAT9 which from what I've heard is very fast. But that is only in certain locations right where the towers are set up for the CAT9 to be utilized for its maximum potential.

        • @guccigu: Yes. And it can be a pain to find out if it's supported in your area. You basically have to ask other people, LOL on Whirlpool and hope someone lives nearby who knows. To be honest, I still don't know what my area uses. I just know it's faster than NBN. I got sick of reading conflicting info, so I just bought the best I could at that time.

    • I haven't heard of the Huawei E5816 but if you are referring to the Huawei E5186 it does have 4 Ethernet ports.

      • Yeah sorry I meant that. Do you believe the 4 ethernet ports makes it worth it over the AC800s for PC? I'm mainly looking to use it for my computer and I want the most reliable connection possible.

For me personally since I game quite a lot I think reliability of the internet (constant up and down/ping) is much more important than having a high up/down.

        • I'm not sure as I don't use the ethernet ports, the AC800s is CAT 9 which would give faster speeds than the E5186 (CAT 6). The main reason I got the E5186 to replace my E5786 was I didn't want a modem with an in-built battery permanently connected to mains power.

Another benefit I found is the E5186 has a better in-built antenna from my own testing and from what I have read on Whirlpool. I get 1 extra bar with the E5186 over the E5786 and faster speeds which I have tested several times with a side by side comparison using the same bands (both are CAT 6 modems with carrier aggregation)

        • @adr8: Yeah - if only for home use, I'd get something like the E5186 - or wait until a cat 9 version appears. But I wanted to cover everything in one. Home use, car, walking around… The battery on these pocket wifi units lasts at least a few hours, but more likely several.

        • If were talking about RJ45 plugs AND a USB cable on the SAME device… I don't think you'd notice any difference - because like I said, the cable isn't the bottleneck - the internet is.

But if comparing RJ45 sockets on one unit, with the USB cable on another unit… Who knows. You'd have to test yourself. Personally I'd just decide: Do I want it only for home use and want lesser speed (if cat 9 is even available where you are) - or do I want to be able to take the internet with me everywhere I go and have cat 9 (again if it's available in your location).

        • @GregMonarch:

Hmm yeah that seems like the best choice. For overall home use I'm probably just going to pick up the E5186. Mainly because the Cable in my area is completely unuseable but I still have enough data on my phone plan to cover outside activities.

Purchased the above deal pretty much to cover my cable internet as I get ready to cancel it as congestion from optus is just abysmal and absolutely unusable within my area.

  • This is almost too good to pass up, although I don't usually like contracts.

I do a lot of caravanning (grey nomad) and I've recently got a 50GB jeenee data sim and put it in a Telstra 4gx wringle (e8372) which I got for $20. Ideal for use in the van. Unlocked ok and works fine, but 50GB doesn't go far when windows starts updating! Add the Android devices, a bit of streaming, dropbox, drive etc …

Does anybody have a crystal ball? Are data costs going to keep to go down? Is it worth committing to 12 months?

    • I'd say you're safe as this price offers a great discount, if you were paying full price then maybe locking into 12 mths might be risky. You mention travelling not sure if the Optus network will be as good in regional areas as Telstra but also something to consider.

      • Thanx agr8.
You're right about regional Telstra, but the only tower with a reasonable signal at home is Optus. No landline at home so the extra data would be very welcome. I carry a long life Telstra SIM for emergency times when no Optus signal on the road.

  • Great deals. I just cant decide which way to jump!

Currently on Optus $70/100GB month to month for our home internet and average about 50GB so 140GB would be wasted.

Tempted to upgrade our Air 2 to the 10.5 pro and get the fancy pen, but questioning the sanity of having a $1400 device that's mostly used by our kids (<5yo).

5th gen ipad seems like the best option. There's little point to 'upgrade' from air 2 to this so I'll sell straight away. Any suggestions what the best colour is for resale??

    • Think it was rose gold > Silver > Space Grey but that was a very quick search I did.

    • "questioning the sanity of having a $1400 device that's mostly used by our kids (<5yo)." - lol - I'd question your sanity too :)

  • Can anyone confirm if the "Optus data sim- 140GB, $52.50mth (1yr contract)" plan comes with unmetered SD netflix streaming?

    • nope, the tablet ones come with unmetered but the sim only ones dont, but with 140gb you probably wont need unmetered, its 200hrs of netflix at medium quality i think.

      • damn, i'm currently on the Optus My MBB Plus 100GB for $70pm uncontracted, but seeing as im at 130GB of unmetered netflix data for the month, i probably cant change.

        • yeah unless you want to recontract and grab an ipad for $52.50 but its contract for 2 years so might not be worth it for you.

  • Sarah from Optus just informed me that this deal is only available for new services only. Is this true?

It seems to conflict with the eligibility criteria on the critical info summary

Basically, i have another 12 months left on my contract and want to recontract using the 140G deal. Is this possible?

    • Yeah the deal is for new plans so adding it as an additional new service or new account. Don't think you'll be able to get this unless you decide to early terminate and add it as a new service.

  • Still available?
    I only see $70 for 100GB..

    • Are you looking at the 12month plans? Otherwise you might need to use incognito mode

  • I currently have an Optus plan where I pay $5 per month extra for a 2nd data SIM that allows me to split the usage across two house.
Would this package support a 2nd data sim?

    • This should allow data pooling.

  • If you get this and find that 140gb is not enough will they let you upgrade to one of the wireless broadband products?

  • Can anyone tell me:
The ipad 'handset with a plan' currently has $0 upfront device payment fee.
Does that mean if I cancel that plan immediately I just pay a straight 30% of $52.50 a month remaining - and keep this device? Or is the 'subsidised cost' of this published somewhere?

  • any decent quality/inexpensive modem for this please? i need to leave this at home, so that housemates can use it too. my last usage was little over 140GB though. but if netflix is included then it should be fine. thanks

    • http://www.kmart.com.au/product/optus-4g-zte-wifi-modem/1476… I bought one of these and its pretty good, I leave it plugged in for internet to my PC and also wifi to my phone. Supports up to 32 users but if you dont need that many, you could always get the Huawei e5573 for around $29.5 when its on sale at woolies.

Got it from Big W for $35 but don't think they're stocking it anymore, there was 2 more at Hurstville when I went back in December.

  • Will this deal be back?

    • +1

No idea, you'll have to ask Optus
