Optus Data Sim: 140GB, $52.50mth (1yr Contract)

1330

EDIT:
Okay so I talked to a 2nd Live Chat who has informed me the deal starts on the 9/12, so tomorrow. Apparently the first one has no clue about anything.
LIVE Chat is telling me the discount is unavailable at the moment and might be a technical glitch.

Optus currently has 25% off the $70 a month plan for 140gb of data, new services and online only.

The ipad also have the same deal however its for 100gb of data,
Ipad 5th Gen ($52.5 per month)

Ipad Pro2 12.9 ($84.5 per month)

    So the deal is unavailable?

    • I'm not sure, can you see the 25% off online discount on the $70 plan, I went to checkout and it doesn't show the discount and the live chat state they can't see the discount on the website. So unless there's something wrong with my browser or something.

      • Nothing showing up for me

        • in the $70 plan or checkout? Live chat seems to have no idea, they're telling me it isn't available but if I can see it then I can order online.

      • +2

        I can see the discount!

  • +1

    Typical SingTel Floptus, dodgy deals

    • +3

why neg, it's true, optus love the drama they cause

  • I can see it on the website for $52.50 but still getting the full $70 plan fee.

  • Working for me

    • checkout?

Yeah didnt the first time i tried, but then a few mins later showed the 25% discount on the ipad pro 12.9”, havent tried the others as 12.9” ipad is life changing and only one worth doing.
Chrome on ipad if that matters.

“25%Online Only Discount -$17.50 per month”

    Stingtel strikes again.

    • +9

If you can actually get 140GB for $70 per month it is a viable NBN replacement for many.

  • Is there any way to protect against going over the provided data and not risk a huge bill? At $10 per extra 1 GB it could get ugly.

    • +1

Maybe use a data tracking app. Could it be possible to set up a low credit SMS alert?
A more fail-safe way might be to use a USB modem in a router set with a monthly global data limit, such as one running Gargoyle firmware. That firmware has limited compatibility though for newer routers with USB, however you can direct its WAN to connect to a 4G hot-spot, then repeat it as a different SSID Wi-Fi network which is data monitored.

      • Hi just wondering if you know what router runs Gargoyle firmware that's works for this?

        • I use Netgear wndr3700 to do exactly this I use it in my Airbnb properties. I buy them from eBay for about $40 and a Huawei usb modem dongle and plug that in the back Takes about 5 min to set up. Blocks access for the day (or month if you like) when it hits a quota.

        • @simonjb: cool thanks, did have a look and wasn't sure which to get as the so many.
Does this actually work with wireless modem? I've been reading that i need a 3g/4g router which this isn't or is it?
Would the Telstra mf90 unlocked work with this modem?

          Appreciate your help.

        • @huntress_love:

          No need.

Not sure about mf90 I use huawei e3772 dongle. I buy them for $20 usually. It's locked to Optus. Except you can get around the lock by putting in your preferred network sim before you first plug it into anything.
Choose sim in wan settings and off you go.

    • +5

This is why Optus can do it at this price. Just look at how much more it is for OVO 100GB for $70 per month. However OVO is pre-paid and only month to month.

The $10 per extra 1 GB is open ended. Hence you could easily end up with excess data chargers that exceed your plan cost.

At 100Mbps download speed it would take less than 10 minutes to go though 7GB. At the excess rate that's $70!

At 200Mbps it would take less than 5 minutes.

These speeds are not uncommon particularly during the night if you use it as an NBN replacement service. An unexpected software update, traffic to iCloud/Dropbox/Google Drive or some software starts doing something unusual and you have a very expensive month.

In all likelihood Optus is in breach of the Australian Consumer Law by setting the excess rate at $10 per GB with no excess cap, nor any automatic way of stopping your account running up a massive bill. This is particularly the case given that the plan data cost is less than $0.50 per GB at the normal price.

If you are going to use this service as your main internet connection purchase a Gargoyle or compatible router and use the quota management system in it.

      • huh? i have never seen 4g speeds @100mps let alone 200mps - what are you talking about?

        • +1

I see over 100mbps on 4G all the time.

        • wow i am really missing out.. i am with optus and live in melbourne and i have only ever seen about 30..

          i stand corrected

        • +1

@billy3000: are you using an old modem or phone?
Have you tried in the middle of the night?
Some people have reported around the 300 megabits per second.

        • +4

I have an s8+ on Optus and have never seen it.. middle of the night or anytime..

perhaps you are perched assassins creed style on a cell tower?

        • @billy3000:
He would probably get up to 600Mbit/s in that position.

Of course it depends on how many people are using your tower and how many bands you are aggregating.

I believe the Mate 10 has the best LTE chipset on the market right now. 1.2Gbit/s max speed.

      • Do you know which 4g routers runs the Gargoyle firmware?

        • Have a look on the gargoyle website. The list is very extensive.

        • The configuration will most likely be USB modem into Gargoyle router, or connect it via Wifi.

        • +1
        • @chyawala:
Do you know if any router on that list would work, as I've been reading that I need a 3g/4g router for a wireless modem to work and have no idea which ones they are or if there's any on the list?

        • @huntress_love:
You will likely use two devices, see pic. http://i42.tinypic.com/211w3rl.jpg

  • So the iPad plans comes with the iPad included in the total cost ie $52.50?
As the small print says doesn't include device repayment.

    • For the ipad 5th generation I think, it should be 25% off access fee.

Think the other ones still have device repayment, I put the assumed total in the original post.

  • +5

If you get the 100gb plan with device, netflix/stan in sd is unmetered. Too late for me to jump on this, currently on $70 for 140gb. I'd recommend d their ac800s modem though, I'm currently getting 126mbit with triple carrier aggregation in my area. Others are getting 270mbit in other areas.

    • which bands do they use for triple CA?

      • Uses a combination of whatever will give it the strongest signal. Mine is usually 2x 2300mhz and 1x 700mhz. The signal at my place isn't the best as the house is in a bit of a valley and is surrounded by trees so if your house is in a better spot you can get more speed.

    • That ac100s modem. I guess it will plug into any router go spread wifi around the house? Does it come with antennas? Or have option to add them?
I was looking at their Huawei e5186 as other option as does all in one

      • The ac800s modem has enough range. I can connect from 20m away outside the house.

You can get antennas for it. Otherwise, the recent software update adds support for the telstra aircard cradle, which has strong antennas and gigabit ports.

  • +1

Hmm should I ditch Exetel ADSL 50 gb peak 50 gb off peak for $40 for this? also looks like optus is unmetered for Yes TV by Fetch, Netflix, Stan, ABC iview, ABC KIDS iview and ABC ME

    • +6

The unmetered TV streaming is restricted to Mobile & tablet devices only, Standard Definition, 1.5Mbit max, one stream per service.

Gotta really pay attention to the fine print with these guys.

    • @Amanda, Are you sure Fetch TV/Netflix is unmetered ? I read on their website that Netflix is only unmetered with their Home Broadband service. And this is NOT home broadband service/plan. It's a data sim plan.

      • +1

        @Paul11:
It's unmetered for the Data SIM plans too. There are limits as I mentioned above. It won't work for tethering or broadband modems. It's designed for tablet use.

The Fetch TV service is not included with mobile broadband plans. But if you already have Fetch TV, it is unmetered to stream using mobile broadband on a mobile/tablet device.

        • So if you tether, Netflix usage counts against your quota?

Is there any way of getting Netflix onto a TV, without it counting against your quota?

        • @prhino: HDMI out would be the simplest way, if your phone supports MHL or HDMI

        • @jonsnow Are you saying that you won't actually be able to use Netflix etc through a broadband modem?

Or are you saying it will count against your data quota?

  • +1

I just chatted with Seb via online chat. And after waiting around for almost 10 minutes, the rep confirmed the deal - $52.50/month for 140gb 4g data (12 months contract). Though at first rep mentioned it's $70/month but after I send him the website link, $52.50/month deal was confirmed. Rep also wanted to use the order form in the online chat and not the normal website checkout due to the website 'glitch'.

Good luck everyone, hopefully they honour the deal :)

do you have to buy their modem which uses a specific apn for the deal ….. tried sim only a few months ago and the deal was had to also buy their modem .
    deal says sim only .

    • cant you just stick it in a cheap pocket wifi.

      • +1

seems you can …. the deal the tried to sell me was for 200 gb per month which needed their special modem and operates on 2300mhz …. seems the 140gb sim you can use on any models and it’s faster ……

  • I only see max 100GB on the list?

    • are you looking at 12 months data sim only? That's the one with 140gb.

  • Guys, do i need like 100 points id for this?

      Yes

It's a 12 month contract, so if you are using a foreign passport you will need a visa that does not expire within the next 12 months. Otherwise you need to go month-to-month postpaid, or prepaid.

  • +20

    TAKE NOTE!!!

I signed up on the 100GB/ipad plan several months ago, and got the 128GB 9.7" ipad with wifi AND cellular for $0/m, then sold the ipad on Gumtree (no fees PLUS no risk of the buyer claiming he received an empty box, or returning one to me - a common scam). This brought the $70/m 24 month plan down to about $47.50/m. That's $22.50/m off, and $540 I sold the ipad for. (Note there are two 9.7" ipads that are both $0/m - so don't make the mistake of getting the one with less memory - get the 128GB.)

Anyway, assuming you can still sell that ipad for $540 today, that would bring the $70/m 100GB plan on sale for $52.50/m down to just $30/m - IF - that $52.50 price is for the entire 24 months.

Note if you do this, you no longer have the tablet - so obviously you can't upgrade the tablet mid-way through the 24-month plan. (Who cares.) And you can't leave early either, because you can't return a tablet you no longer own.

    Other points:

    • An alternative is to get TWO of those plans and sell both ipads to bring the monthly cost down to $30 + $30 = $60/m. This is still $10 less than the original $70/m for ONE plan, but now you have 200GB AND unmetered data on both SIMs.

    • BTW… They say the SIM has to be inserted into a tablet or phone to use the free sport, iheart, etc. add-ons. That is NOT true. (At least not until they decide to enforce it.) My SIM is in an Optus pocket wifi, and my laptop is connected to that via a cable for internet. My phone is also connected to the pocket wifi via wifi for internet too. And I get unmetered data. So do a bunch of other people on Whirlpool. For example, I take the pocket wifi out to the garage, connect to iheart radio on the phone but over wifi, and plug the phone audio out into a stereo system.

    • No, there's no way to set a 'hard limit' on data used, except to login to your account (dashboard) and check. They do send out warnings, but they're often a day behind. The idea obviously is to have some idea what you use before you sign up, allowing for the fact that BOTH up and downloads are counted, and check your account regularly the first month to get some idea of your usage. Also, when check Kogan 16GB SIM deals are cheap, I sometimes order those if I think I might go over the 100GB.

    • No, you do not need to buy their modem. I've also had the SIM in my phone and connected my laptop via wifi for internet.

    • Nice!

      • +2

Argh… I can't edit now, so here's an addition to the second-last point:

        • DO NOT adjust those % usage warnings in your 'dashboard' (account) just as a test - make sure you really WANT what you change it to. Because I remember someone on Whirlpool saying once you change (or maybe it's delete?) those, you lose the ability to adjust the settings.
        • +3

AND forgot to say… Not everyone can get the free data to work over wifi. (Some people have to have the SIM in their phone/tablet to get unmetered data.) No one really knows why. But it works for at least 2/3 or more of people. The safest way to make certain it does, is to buy an Optus pocket wifi (though it really shouldn't make any difference).

The most popular one is the Huawei E5573. I have a Huawei E5786 (very expensive). Their newest one only out a few months is the AC800S (between the two in price I think). Each of these has a better 'cat' in that order, the AC800S being the 'fastest' cat level - IF - the towers in your area have the frequencies to take advantage of it.

        • @GregMonarch:

At worst, wouldn't it just be that any streaming data (eg. Netflix) counts against your 140GB quota?

The Fair Use documentation isn't clear:

"For technical reasons downloads, mobile and mobile broadband WiFi hotspots, streaming or casting on TVs (such as through Chromecast and Apple TV) … are excluded and will incur data charges."

        • @prhino: Oh, definitely. The only problem is, free = don't have to worry about how much data you have left, who cares if you fall asleep while watching, etc. Optus usage can take 24 hours or more to update too. And I read something on Whirlpool about if you're watching close to time when you're data is about to reset for a new month. I forget now, but I think it was something like: data that should be applied to your new month, gets applied to your previous month, so if you're close to over your quota, and thought you were safe because your new month started at midnight - you're not safe after all.

    • +1

you sir, know how to game the system (bow), I'd jump on this two ipads trick but not really keen to get myself stuck for 24 months

      • +2

LOL. I was just designing a spreadsheet to calculate if it was worth cancelling the $70/m plan and signing up again on one of these discounted plans. You have to think carefully and calculate things that way, to see if 24 months is really a 'risk'.

It's too complicated to explain the calculations in typing. But I worked out if someone like me had signed up on the $70/m, 24 month plan, sold the ipad for $540, stayed with Optus for 7 months, then broke contract today to get one of these deals, paid out what they owed on the tablet and their last month of usage (as per their conditions) - then signed up on a new 24 month plan at these current prices, and sold the SECOND tablet too… that you would break even.

Since it's the same quota, it's obviously not worth the hassle after only 6 months. HOWEVER… Do the same after 12 months when the remaining pro-rata value of the tablet has dropped more, and that person would be paying $17 less per month than staying on the $70/m until their last 12 months ran out.

What I'm saying is, if Optus keeps increasing download limits and/or lowering prices every 12 months, it may be worth cancelling 24 month contracts every 12 months, and signing up again for another 24 months - as long as you kept selling the tablets.

At it's slowest, it's still faster than NBN (but I don't game), and if telcos keep stepping up 'categories' to increase speed, and NBN keeps increasing in price at the same time like they're predicting - I believe more people will catch on and the NBN will DIE the death it deserves. (That'll teach them for cancelling my ADSL2+ when it was all I needed… They forced me from unlimited downloads at a speed that was sufficient, and I wound up with better speeds than the NBN at a cheaper price PLUS calls.)

i.e. I used to pay $40/m for home phone and that's without making any calls. Plus $60/m for unlimited ADSL2+, for a total of $100/m. Now I've disconnected the home phone, I'm paying $70/m for faster speed than NBN (100GB downloads so I have to watch but it's not a huge problem), and I get a $4.90 Kogan SIM to make as many calls as I like, for a total of $75, or $25 less. BUT… I now have internet available everywhere thanks to the pocket wifi. So I'm not tied to the house, have online radio in the car, unlimited phone calls…

Goodbye NBN. Never knew you and hopefully never will.

        • I've just realised my comment a few messages above, about not being able to return the tablet is false. If you still have the tablet you can pay a fee to upgrade it. And if you've sold it instead, you CAN cancel your contract, because the tablet is yours anyway. (You never return the tablet unless paying that fee to upgrade it.)

  • We're moving interstate next month (ACT to Brisbane). Would anyone recommend using this type of plan instead of connecting to NBN? We have NBN now but it is pretty average - on a 100/40 plan we don't get more than 50mbps DL if connected via WIFI. Usage is under 100gb per month. Nooby question, I'm presuming that the SIM modems can be used like a regular modem? We usually have four devices running off the one connection at any one time. Thanks 🙂

Edited to add I presume NBN is available in Brisbane LOL.

    • If you're asking if that area is ok, I don't know - you'd have to find someone in that area. Maybe ask on the Whirlpool optus thread if no-one here replies. If you just mean is it faster… then yes. I went from ADSL2+ to a mobile broadband SIM with Jeenee. Later on I went to Optus. Both were noticeably faster than ADSL2+, and I've read the NBN is often slower than that. So while I haven't had NBN, I guess that must mean mobile broadband is faster. There are caveats. For example, calls take priority. So sometimes it's slower at peak times. I don't play games; I can always watch youtube videos on the lowest setting; and although I don't watch on the high setting to save on data, when I have switched up I've never noticed any lag. (I'm in a NSW seaside tourist area.)

It also depends on what pocket wifi you buy. There are different 'cat' devices (categories). e.g. Cat 3, cat 4, etc. The higher the number, the more frequencies/bands it's combining together to pull data from simultaneously to increase speed. But again, it depends if the towers in your area have those extra bands. Just buy the highest cat device you can afford/want to afford and then forget about it, LOL.

Not sure exactly what you're asking about the modem, but it all depends which one you get. Some have external antenna/s sockets and you can buy an outside antenna to extend range/get better reception (increased speed). And most can be plugged into devices either via a cable for internet, or over wifi. Most new pocket wifis have 10+ connections. I've never needed to do that so can't share any help on that. But it is faster than NBN, so… ? Maybe ask on Whirlpool about the specific model pocket wifi you plan to buy - how people find performance with multiple simultaneous connections. (If no-one here answers.)

      • If you do use it for your home, probably get a sim modem that is for houses or a netgear AC800s (optus sells it online, asked in-store but they didn't know about it or stock that one). Read about the AC800s (cat9) and people were getting up to 270mbps but that depends on location I guess, it also has two external antenna spots.

        • I don't understand why people get a 'home' modem, unless it's for data monitoring I guess. You can slip the pocket wifi into your pocket and have internet everywhere you go, and most of them have external antenna sockets and can connect 10+ devices via wifi. Plus connect one device via cable at the same time as serving wifi to the others. (And maybe more than one device via cable using a USB hub, but I'm not sure on that.)

        • @GregMonarch: I have both the E5786 and E5186 and the latter gets significantly faster speeds. Also gets a stronger signal (extra bar)

        • @adr8: Hm, ok. Guess it depends if you want portable or not. Or to quote that mexican girl: "Why not have both!?"

    • on a 100/40 plan we don't get more than 50mbps DL if connected via WIFI

What is your sync speed and what do you get over Ethernet on speedtest website?

    • if your Gaming it really Matters…. theres relly alot of take in to consideration there eg FTTP/FTTB/FTTC/HFC FTTN …. etc

  • How do you guys use so much data on a mobile device? Or are you using this as a primary house wifi via hotspot?

    Just curious

    • +1

My world class NBN service used to be so unstable on a daily basis for over 2 years that I had no other option but to rely on my mobile data to keep me in touch with the world. I have 85gb monthly data allowance and it's my primary source of internet consumption, I'm almost always using 4G over Wi-Fi. Though I changed my NBN service provider and things have improved a lot, my 4G still has faster speed than my world class NBN service so I won't be switching back.

      • +1

Oh - and I use one of these: www.ebay.com.au/itm/272474977145 to connect the pocket wifi to my laptop, and my phone connects to it over wifi. This means when I'm leaving the house, I just 'tilt' the wifi to break the connection, stick it in my pocket, pick up the phone, and I have internet everywhere I go. So: Unmetered music in the car, for example (iHeart radio on the phone over wifi). I assume you'd be able to play that through the phone over bluetooth too.

Apart from the convenience, the reason I use that cable is so I'm not stressing the socket by constantly plugging/unplugging.

    • +1

It's my main/only internet connection. And mobile broadband counts data both up AND down. But I think the most I've used is 70GB. Last month due to having a couple of 16GB Kogan SIMs, it was only 30GB (62GB with the Kogan SIMs counted).

      In order of usage:

      • Video downloads (torrents)
      • Youtube
      • browsing
      • email

Note: I don't share torrents. With a 100GB data limit I just download new episodes then disconnect. Btw, I use qBittorrent, which allows downloading in sequential order and 'download first and last pieces first'. This means I download the first 10% or so, start watching, and it's finished downloading before I've caught up viewing. This means I don't have to leave it downloading until I have the entire file, causing me to forget I was downloading and waste my data limit. Because I'm sitting in front of the computer, I turn off the torrent right after I'm finished watching it. So it's only been sharing for 20 minutes at most. I also set upload speed on each file to the slowest speed, again to limit data use. Or I use "Flud" on my android phone in the same way.

    • Currently using two of these for downloading PC games. Game sizes are massive these days, ~50GB per game. Chews right through these data plans.

  • Is this 140gb per month or for the year?

    • 140gb per month. i am thinking of changing vividwireless connection to this plan.

  • Noob question. Can I get the iPad plan and stick the sim in their ac800s modem to use as mobile broadband? Looking for quota free Netflix and decent broadband speed throughout the house!

    • You can get the mobile broadband but I think the netflix is for the tablet/mobile device only and not tethering (1 device) also it's restricted to SD or 1.5mbps (think megabits) stream.

  • Anyone had vividwireless B315 modem and successfully used optus sim into it?

  • We have only one tower, for about 8 weeks it went very slow, from about 25Mbps to the slowest which was less than 1Mbps. http://beta.speedtest.net/result/6693149414 was at 7AM, It became unusable.
We reported but where told testing showed nothing wrong with the tower.
So, my question is before signing up for a 12month contract, is there anyway out of this deal if your tower goes fubar?
No it was not congestion, the tower finally went SOS and it was fixed and everything is back to normal, but top speed is now around 10 to 20Mbps.

    • +2

is there anyway out of this deal if your tower goes fubar?

If the connection is not fit for service you should be able to get out of the contract. You may have to pay off the ipad or device though.

  • When starting on this plan does the month start from the date of order or the date of activation?

  • This is very much worth a shot. Although Optus are selling data plans like candy, they will also let you jump off contract with a little call to the TIO. The case managers are still jerks but will let you out if it's slow.

My local tower only worked on 3g for weeks. They were pretty keen to get rid of me - nobody had any idea of the problem. Left the modem on 3g only and held on until the problem was fixed up.

Now I'm back on 30mbps speeds. TIO case manager hasn't called back and was a jerk. Optus are terrible and should be dissolved but this deal is WAY too good to be true. If your ADSL sucks and NBN is a year off - get on this now. If it backfires, get a full refund.

And don't give them DD details till you have consistent service.

    • Ah, the love hate relationship we have with the companies that stooge us but then offer new deals.

      • ^^^^ this so much. Dude is like 'mate, I am doing you a good deal here - you can cut contract with no penalty'

'Please don't. I need this deal! Just fix your 4g in Chippo!'

Don't give them direct debit details period. Optus told me on the phone before signing up DD details were mandatory. The Optus store said that's rubbish, I could provide DD, credit card, or nothing and pay manually. So I didn't provide details. Been on the plan several months now. I pay using BPAY after I receive a monthly emailed invoice. And while Optus says they will charge an extra fee for paying this way, they don't. So don't allow them to tell you all you have to provide DD details. It's not true.

Nice job OP - I'm now paying $17.50 less for 40GB more data - can't complain

Can’t wait for 400GB/mon 4G plans for under $80, then it's feasible for pretty much everyone.

  • without sounding a complete idiot, why would somebody grab this instead of getting extra data on your Mobile plan and hotspotting? So like today, you can get a Samsung S8 with 100gb data allowance $120 on the Optus Network.

    • 52.50 vs 120. 52.50 + 59 = 120 GB data. It much cheaper to data pool.

      • Ye but more the logistics. How often would you use your ipad outside of wifi zones for it to be a consideration.. Just wanted to know incase I picked up this deal in the future

Well you wouldn't have to use your ipad because the data from the data sim is combined with your phone (if you're with optus for that). And at the same time if you are using your ipad on the train then you wont need to use your phones battery to hotspot.

Personally I use alot of data while travelling to work/uni so it's good to have another device for internet/streaming so I don't use alot of my phone's battery. It more user dependent, so if you mainly use data at home or work then it won't be worth it, but if you have long travel times (not by car) then its worth it IMO.

Also I'm getting the deal with a friend so we get 70gb each and pay $26.25 a month, it's on his optus plan so he gets the data added to his phone plan and I'll use the data sim on a portable modem to hotspot or maybe use a tablet.
