Can I claim TRS on items paid with Gift Cards?

I am thinking of getting the Google Pixel 2 XL from JB Hifi and a friend of mine can get 7.5% off through his employer (not JB hifi).

With the sale now, it comes to $1200 roughly and I am wondering if I can claim trs on it since I have paid using gift cards/Vouchers?

I understand I need to have the tax invoice with my name and address since the value is over a $1000.

Thanks

"Tax invoices for $1,000 or more must also show the name and address of the purchaser. "

    • I just updated my post at the same time you posted this! I get that part of it

      • So how are they going to issue the invoice under your name with staff discount?

No no. You got it wrong. My friend can get gift vouchers via his work for the value and I simply have to scan the vouchers at jb hi fi for the mode of payment instead of a credit card and they still have to provide me an invoice for proof of purchase of the item.

Also, this is not a staff discount via jb.

Presumably the friend bought the gift cards and OP spent them.

        • @greenpossum: Spot on. I normally give him my gift card and he buys the vouchers in his work portal and emails them to me and I simply scan the voucher instore at jb hifi. I have done this in the past with no issues.

Only question is, I have never claimed gst before. So what happens? But I guess mode of payment doesnt make a difference like you mentioned below as long as it shows my name, address and gst amount.

@aspirepranesh: It's all there on the website: https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Ente/Tour/Are-you-a-traveller Use the online form to get a QR code so you can use that queue. Get there with enough time to spare.

        • @aspirepranesh:

Well, wasn't clear in the post.

        • @greenpossum: Appreciate that. Somehow missed that page when I was reading on the trs site. I also found an other thread on OZB regarding the same question I have had and someone had mentioned this link.

        • @gmail92: All good. Thanks anyway. Got it fixed

shouldn't be an issues since you paid GST. Mode of payment is irrelevant

Gift card is just a method of payment and has no bearing on TRS. What the invoice shows as the GST is what you can claim. Name, address, etc. etc.

  • Why not !

    From https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Ente/Tour/Are-you-a-traveller…

What can’t be claimed? A refund will not be paid on the following goods and services:
gift cards/vouchers (although goods purchased with gift cards/vouchers are eligible for a refund subject to all TRS requirements being met).
