Phone Suitable for a New Highschooler?

So, kid going into highschool next year. The school orientation night for parents indicates it is sort of expected the kids will hav a phone. We'd kinda resigned ourselves to that before then too.

What is a decent, basic, budget smart phone I can buy outright for my kid for Christmas? Probably not going to get and iphone.

Will consider packaging our phones and NBN together for the SIM, or just go with a basic Amaysim package. My wife is with Amaysim and we haven't had any issues and the call/data rates are pretty reasonable.

Thanks in advance.

I had the same issue last year and I

    • Bought the cheapest Xiaomi at the time (Redmi 3S)
    • Got the Kogan Mobile Small plan on 365 days

Probably not the cheapest option, but together quite a usable combo for a high schooler whose high school won't even allow phone in class (have to be put into the locker 1st thing in the morning).

  • Redmi plus Kogan is the best combo!!!!

  • Crazy that the school makes your kid have a phone. I would have thought they would be a massive distraction. And what if it gets stolen, or dropped & smashed while at school? Will school insurance pay for it? The kid didn't take it in out of his own free will, the school made him…

    • It's inevitable really. Kids are growing up in an IT world.

      • Yup. They kept talking about using a phone to take a photo of stuff for class, and you've got to keep up with the Jones' too - most friends will be getting one and some already have them.

Not having a phone now is social ostracisation which is very harmful. More so than distractions, pornography on demand, FBI agents pretending to be 14 year old girls etc.

At least 2 schools I know of and have been associated with refuse to allow the students to use the phone during school hrs etc ( generally to stop sexting) if the kid takes the phone outta the locker or bag they get it taken of them till home time, Should see the tantrums they throw Love the attitude and balls shown by these schools. No kid needs a phone at school in emergencies they can use school Landline or parents can call school

Probably something like a Xiaomi A1 on a kogan plan would be the cheap good for value combo

My kids are old enough that i did not have this problem. If i was in the situation that you are in i would buy a cheap dual sim phone and set one slot up on the Kogan Mobile Small plan for 365 days or similar (permanent phone number and enough credits for emergencies) Your child could then use the other slot with whatever prepaid sims are cheap at the time with no risk of bill shock.

From my experience if the phone doesn't say Apple or Samsung your child will be the laughing stock. Get your child an X or Note 8 to achieve instant legendary status on day 1. Add a 100gb plan with hotspot permanently active to guarantee future school captaincy.

You are right. Nothing is too much to ensure my little cherub is the most popular kid in school.
