Loakes are an old English shoe brand, and make Goodyear Welted shoes which, other than being higher quality, allow your shoes to be re-soled time and again letting one pair of shoes to last literally decades, in true OzB style.

Just be careful that you are buying GYW shoes, because some of the shoes are normal cemented (glued) soles. It'll say in the description.

I've been looking for a good pair of shoes for a while and found out about GYW through research, but this was months ago and haven't since then seen good reputable brand GYW shoes for less than the $400-$700 range.

Nice find op. Some good deals there.
Damn, not many sizes left in the cap toe variants😥
The website design & ui is awful imho, hardly any photos & no size guide. Looks cheaply done.

What is a c-fit shoe btw?

I got a pair of Aldwych's about 4 years ago. Still going strong, fantastic shoes but I did pay $376 full price at a brick and mortar store so the $479 before discount price is a bit suspect?

    • Unfortunately I have far too little experience in the shoe market to be able to comment - only from personal experience, these seem to be very low prices for GYW shoes. The extent of my knowledge I'm afraid.

You're right, but remember that Loake restricted overseas retailers from selling to Australian customers a few years, so the RRP is probably higher these days due to a lack of competition. As a reference, Pediwear in the UK sell the Aldwych for about $342.

From what I recall, Loake's 1880 collection is the only range worth considering if you're after quality from Loake. Another option is to look at rebranded Loakes from Herring Shoes.

      • Regardless these are great shoes. Still good prices. I nearly got another pair but common sense prevailed.

Whoa! Don't get another pair in the same style, that's madness.

      • Didn't pay attention to the export restrictions… there goes my 10% Pediwear Loake club discount :(

Wouldn't mind a pair of cannons.

  • Are the shoes true to size?

  • Got aldwych and smith! Still breaking the Aldwych in.

  • How are returns if it doesn't fit well?

I thought OzBargainers only wore black suits with square toed shoes? This is madness.

    • Ikr, since when did ozbargainers get style?

Just so that everyone is aware, I bought the Loakes Gunny for $199.00 back in June on clearance from their website. Its now again on clearance for $259. Go figure.

    • How's the shoe?

      • Shoe is great. At $199.00 you cant go wrong.

    • Bummer I wanted that one! Looks pretty posh

Not much from the 1880 line…

Only worth buying from Loake is their Loake 1880 line. Design line is made in India, not UK

While I am not specialised in shoes, and I happen to be flatfooted,
I did go through a long Dr. Martens phase and quite a "shoe comfort history",
I had to visit a podiatrist, and got fitted orthotics which do make a difference in heavy/high-use work shoes.

I don’t have the source to hand but I remember reading somewhere that Charles Tyrwhitt shoes are rebranded Loakes. See for example https://www.loakeshoes.com.au/products/loakeelland vs http://www.ctshirts.com/au/black-bennett-toe-cap-oxford-shoe…

CTShirts tends to have most shoes cheaper usually and with other coupons + free shipping etc.

FWIW, I bought CTShirts GYW shoes a month ago and am loving them.

    • So are some Herring Shoes.

  • Loake are really great shoes and well worth the money. I've got a pair of Smiths and they are still going strong after 2 years and I walk about 8km a day in them 5 days a week.

    • +1

you must have a really long office

    • Love the fit of my Smiths too, however they're a bit too polished for my liking so I wear my Aldwych more often and Smith on more formal occasions.

Great price for Loake. Not wanting to bomb the post, however if you're after good English shoes, Herring Shoes is a great resource. No Loakes on special there though :)

  • Anyone know a good place in Sydney to have the Goodyear welt resoled?

    • +2

Speedy Shoes just outside Ashfield Station. Google Map. The cobbler is highly skilled and has the equipment to properly resole goodyear welts - hard to find nowadays. I've had a few pairs of shoes resoled there, including Loakes.

      • If you don't mind, how much was it to do the Loakes?

        Can pm if you want.

It was around $80 and it was almost a year ago. That was the price to remove all the horrible glue and sole that Mr Mint(avoid!) used as well as a new sole.

    • Got my Loakes redone at Coombs Strand Arcade - $80ish

    • Same questions, but in Melbourne.

Anyone know a good place in Melbourne to have the Goodyear welt resoled?

      • +3

I've tried many cobblers in Melbourne over the years to resole Goodyear Welted and after some ruining 3 pairs of 1880's I eventually found Manfreds Shoe lounge in North Melbourne. He's awesome and does a proper job! Proper English cobbler skills. Left every pair like new!

        • Thanks keitho!

Can you remember how much he charges?

        • @JB1: $140 ish for full sole and heel. Properly stitched in and left them like a new pair.

  • These are more than I normally spend- what is the quality like on these? Not familiar with Goodyear welt
