Get Your Resume Reviewed by an Expert, First 50 OzBargain Users Only

Update: Merry Christmas everyone! I will be pumping through as many of these as I can this week until the first 2 weeks of the new year.

Update: some people cannot be sent messages due to your settings, please check them before posting a request

Hey Everyone,

After having reviewed resumes for 100s of friends, colleagues, and students I have a knack for reviewing them As such I want to offer to review your resume as a freebie.

After working in both a university careers service as well as having hired multiple interns, volunteers, and staff members across various organisations I know that resumes are a challenge for many.

I am doing this because I have been inspired by my friend @epicsaletime who is helping out 30 OzBargan users in reviewing their LinkedIn profiles. We are having a friendly challenge between us because we want to see how we can potentially make this service commercially viable and we want to to help as many people as possible in the process

I can send you an example of my resume on request and my LinkedIn is also viewable at the link below

Important Guidelines: Replace any personal details that you would like as follows: [mobile] etc or use a pseudonym (fictional details)

The following things should also never be on your resume, please take them out before you send your resume:

  • Date of Birth
  • Home Address
  • Gender
  • Religion
  • Ethnicity

These things cannot be part of any hiring decision but avoiding any subconscious bias is in your best interest. It can be tough to mask things like gender and ethnicity if it shows through your name but these do not have to be listed as information dot points at all.

To redeem: please comment below, I cannot yet PM you as I am a new member but I will do so as soon as I can in the order of comments below.

Cheers,

  • Yes please. Thank you

  • Hello, could you also review my resume?
    It's not a very good one…

  • +1

Dont do this, probably capture all your resume then forwarded off to a recruitment agency for profit.

    • Agreed.

Having some experience in the area, I know that giving proper and detailed resume help takes at least a few hours and a good conversation with the person. Anything short of this is going to be useless 'tips' that anyone can find on the internet. Nobody needs your resume to offer these useless generic tips.

While it sounds like a nice thing, the OP is most likely collecting people's info for their own purposes/profit. If you go to an agency to get this kind of help, whether it be a jobsearch or careers centre, the organisation is usually bound to keep your details private unless you consent to them being used otherwise. With this, you may as well be posting up your resume online for everyone to see because OP will do whatever he wants with it.

What's the bet OP was a stamp-licker or receptionist or something at the uni career centre. lol

      • read the "important guidelines" above, I specifically mention that submissions should replace their real names/emails with placeholders if they wish to do so, this has been there since the original post.

I've also been clear that I'm interested to see how commercially viable this is in the future. For clarity's sake I will NOT be (and have zero interest in) forwarding any resumes to any recruiters.

Following successful resume reviews, I will likely ask participating OzBargainers if there are any additional complementary things we might be able to build or make or do for them as an option.

This is not a super detailed review, that said, I rarely see a resume that I can't make specific recommendations about content and formatting tailored to the resume in under 15-30min.

As for the uni careers centre, I have in the past worked for a uni careers centre so good guess, it is also in my linkedin.

Your points are not invalid and I hope I have addressed them somewhat.

  • Interested in having a resume reviewed if you are able.

    Regards

  • Interested :)

  • Keen as…

  • OP, what do you think about putting my LinkedIn profile link in my resume, just below my name? Cheers

    • Absolutely, I do this myself.

You need to ensure that LinkedIn is also up to date and completely consistent with whatever is in your resume (which should go without saying but lets say it anyway)

  • Interested if you have a spot. Thanks.

  • interested if you still have a spot left
    thanks!

  • Hi i am interested if you have a spot thanks! I've been having no luck with employers and I think that is mostly because of my resume :(

  • Interested! thanks mate

  • Why should a home address never be on a CV? Based on other comments I assume you think it may result in discrimintion (e.g. social economic indicator, travel time, etc).

With that said I usually see it on CVs and it is also important, given plenty of my friends and colleagues have been exploring international stints.

    • All of the above reasons,

Also for basic privacy, you don't need to let them know where you live. Someone creative could look up so much information on you with that.

  • can you please review my resume thanks?

  • Hi.. Any chance you can review my resume? Thanks

  • I'm interested if there are any spots left please! :)

  • I'm also interested!

  • Intrested if spot left. Thanks

  • Very keen if any spots left

    thanks

  • Any chance you could review mine, please?

Hope everyone has a great Christmas too

  • 11 on this page alone! Impressive! Thank you for taking the time to offer this service out. You'll be putting a lot of families at ease if anyone is able to land a job with your kind services.
Please add me onto the list, if possible.I've taken most of all you've said into consideration already. Am keen to see what improvements you would make to mine.
    Thanks.

  • Hey mate, just logged in to write this. Thank you for offering the service for OzBargainers, I'm sure the community appreciates it.

  • If you want to review another resume I would greatly appreciate you reviewing mine.
    No worries if you can't.

  • interested thanks

  • I am interested too thank you.

  • These things cannot be part of any hiring decision but avoiding any subconscious bias is in your best interest.

    There's also conscious bias.

But hey, i'm a white guy so disclosure may well be in my interests.

  • Me please! Very much appreciated

  • If you have the time I would be extremely grateful if you could review my resume.

  • if something is free - doesn't that mean we are the product

    • potentially, I have made my motivations clear in the original post. I want to figure out how to and if it would be worth it to monetise such a service.

If I do a good job, there's also a chance you may wish to work with us in the future.

Also, there is value in general good will even though it's almost never monetary in the short term.

      Finally, merry Christmas :)

      • Hey btw… maybe I shouldn't mention this till after you review mine… but I joined airtasker and there seemed to be a lot of work for this type of thing if you wanted to bid for each job.

(Seems to me a terrible way of finding work so I closed my account.)

      • There are companies already in the market that instead of reviewing your a CV, they build from scratch.

It is an expensive job and there is good money in this area.

  • I'm interested, pm me if you can

  • I am interested, thanks!

  • Interested for me and my partner. thanks

  • missed out but interested

  • Me too. Please PM me the details if you have any spots available.

  • Interested if you can squeeze mine in. Thank you.

  • +1

Everyone above who has asked for one has been sent instructions. These reviews will be finalised by the 2nd week of Jan at the latest as I work on these over the holiday break.

If you posted above and you didn't get a PM with instructions it's likely because your account doesn't allow PMs. Please PM me and I will send the instructions through.

    Merry Christmas all!!

No more requests will be accepted after this post for now until all the submitted resumes are reviewed

  • Has anyone received any feedback on these resumes?

    • Surprisingly I haven't. I'm not holding out hope though, not many people will take the time to review your resume out of the pure kindness of their heart.

      • Very true and there are quite a few requests, but I was hoping we'd get some type of update from the OP though, hence the reason I was asking if anyone received any feedback yet.

    • I haven't received any feedback yet. Got the message from the OP on 26/12 with the details of how to send it. I'm happy to be patient though but just curious as originally the OP mentioned feedback would be provided by the second week of January.

  • So we're in February now. Has anyone received any feedback from the OP or was this just a big scam? Personally, I've tried contacting him, but I had no response.

    • Yes, no feedback received here either. When I check the user info it shows he/she was last logged in on 26/12/2017. I have also PM'd and had no response.

      • +1

Yeah, I don't think we'll ever going to hear from him again. I have to admit though…..he was very convincing.

  • Did anyone get any feedback so far ?

  • Could the OP have any ulterior motives here? What could he do with a whole bunch of resumes?

    • It's a bit disappointing…
From what we can tell, the OP didn't even provide feedback on one.

      • +1

He probably ended up with way more than he had intended.

We can't just assume this was the most diabolical, genius plan to stockpile a whole bunch of personal information from innocent and trusting people.

Perhaps something unfortunate has just happened to him and he is no longer with us.

We should make a poll on this. What is the most likely explanation for OPs disappearance and what is the explanation everyone's hoping?

        • We can't just assume this was the most diabolical, genius plan to stockpile a whole bunch of personal information from innocent and trusting people.

The OP did tell everyone to obfuscate or remove all personal details. So, I doubt it was his plan to collect / stockpile personal information of OzBargain members. Then again, even with names and other details removed, the OP could still sleuth out names of folks via some quick LinkedIn searches.

  • Never got the review.

I know it's 2 years old! Just going through my old messages

I know it's been a while and I'm following through on an update on what's been happening for both audeamus and myself:

    1. I had initially worked with a few dozen LinkedIn resumes. Feedback given, but overall, I've learnt a lot and I'm sure many are overdue for review.

    2. After some time consulting and taking opportunities in my age, I decided to make a significant jump between careers. I'm now in Business Development! Happy to give more context as to why, but started to align with my gaps and overall strategy.

    3. Life happened. I know it's pretty cliched, but both audeamus and I went through some significant changes that helped us to be better people in the long run. Personally, I've changed direction and focus, ultimately placing my energy on work that allows me to network and help people.

    4. Audeamus ended up setting up a NFP that directly addresses what we intended to do through workshops and causes, primarily aimed at younger individuals, but heavily influenced doing things like this (in person and with less lead time).

    5. Our intention of this is to still follow through, irrespective of our time of delivery, but Feel free to reach out nonetheless.

What the hell is the point of the above link?

    • It's been nearly 2.5 years on and I'm still waiting for audeamus to "follow through."

I guess you will be waiting until your dying breath.

        • OMG do you still have hope?

          • @Jaff: LOL! The guy was a member for 14 days on this site. Made some promises and broke people's hearts. :-P
@Alister If you want to track him down, he left his LinkedIn profile here somewhere.

          • @Jaff: LOL no mate, clearly a joke. It's pretty funny really - join as a member, ask for resumes (because he likely had no idea how to write a good resume) and then use them to build his own. I asked for guidance as mine was initially built by a resume making service through the university I attended way back and then was later slightly polished by a large recruitment company who said it was "very good already." I was curious if he would fire shots at it considering he obviously had very little experience as he was quite young.
