Telstra Pre-Paid Nomads - Where Are You Going?

Telstra have officially removed the ability to use pre-paid credit for Google Play purchases, and I'm looking for an alternative carrier. If you're a Telstra nomad, where are you going?

  • gonna check Optus coverage, maybe their current $30/Mo Sim only, if it's not bearable coverage, ALDI 360 day or belong mobile

Unfortunately I can't resign to Optus using my current phone no. as they refuse to recognise it is no longer theirs after porting out years ago. Kogan and Aldi seem like good value picks for someone who doesn't use a lot of data

      • I'm with Kogan on their 'Large' Plan (16 GB) I wouldn't call that a small amount of data.

        https://www.koganmobile.com.au/plans/

They do use Vodafone, but they are considered a 'budget' carrier.

Never had any issues with them ever.

If you pre-pay for the year the Large plan ends up being around $21.

$21/mo for Unlimited Calls/Text + 16GB Data is probably the best deal in Australia IMO.

    • If Optus coverage is not going to be good enough it's unlikely that Telstra Wholesale (eg ADLI, Telechoice, Belong) coverage is either.
If you need Full Telstra Coverage your choices are Boost or Telstra.

(profanity) Optus, their support is death.

  • Suggested ALDImobile

Bought SIM's for ALDI on their $15/month plan, currently offering a promotional 1.5GB and Unlimited Calls.
Assuming that's not extended we'll likely switch up to the Super Pack. $249 for 365 days 42GB Unlimited Calls (works out to just over $20/month for 3.5GB)
Looked at some of the bargain basement operators like Jeenee and Vaya, but happy to pay a little extra to not have to be dikced around by poor customer service.

    • Thanks. Yeah, I've been with Lyca (never again!) and virgin when they first started in aus. Horrible customer service is what initially turned me to Telstra

      • I have no idea if ALDI is any good, just going with the hope that a big company will have a higher level of service than the Ultra Budget mobs. My bad experience was with Vaya, who continued to bill after I ported out, and I had to provide evidence to them of their error!

Tomkun, when you use the option to "Take suggestions from commenters", other users can make comments and suggest a poll option at the same time. They can only do so when making a new comment, but that option will not appear when they reply to an existing comment.

        This is what they'll see

If you want to add in a poll option yourself, you can do that too. For poll options to appear, you must hit the Approve button that appears on the poll item when you hover your mouse over it. There's a magic wand icon that appears on the right.

  • Ill try amaysim a month if not good enough reception ill go either woolworths or aldi mobile.

    • Check Telstra Wholesale coverage maps against Optus…
If anything, Optus Coverage Appears to be better where we travel (still good enough for our needs).
My point is, don't make the assumption that Telstra Wholesale Coverage is better than Optus.

I honestly wouldn't trust any coverage map too much.
        My house:
Galaxy s7 4 bars is max
        Amaysim - 1-2 bar 4G
        Woolworths mobile - 2 Bar 4G
        Telstra - 3 Bar 4G+
        Vodafone - 3 Bar 4G

I have all the above sim cards here and tested on my galaxy s7 in the same spot.

Optus coverage states here is "great"for 4G plus so i'd expect more than it going between 1-2 bars for what they call great reception.

Sure, they're just a guide and your results could just be a matter of your location in your house and the position of the towers in relation to that location.
ie Optus Tower 300m behind you and transmitting around your steel shed.
Telstra Tower 1Km in front of you and transmitting though a window.

The problem I'm trying to highlight is that people think Telstra Wholesale has far better coverage than Optus, because "it's Telstra" when in reality it is very similar.

  • I'm going to Boost once I've run out of recharge vouchers (unfortunately I prepurchased a few given some deals around).

I think the $30 plan is enough for me for now - 4gb data (which can rollover)

    • At that price point, the Vodafone $35 deal for 20 gb seems juicier

      • I want Telstra coverage though.

        • Then I guess there's not many options

  • Suggested Staying with Telstra

Stayed with Telstra and moved to mx

I'm going to try the $2 sim for amaysim ($10 plan). If coverage is good I'll stay with them, if poor probably go to someone on Telstra network (most likely Woolworths $15 plan)

  • Staying with Telstra for coverage, I have another service with WW mobile and get very low signal/dropout on a few locations I frequently visit here in Sydney.

Changed to the Telstra Friends and Family 15GB plan - obviously it's costing me a lot more, but I'm more concerned with value than the total cost. I choose to think of it as a $30 per month phone plan that gets me 15GB + 24 interest free $29 installments on the Galaxy S8. An S8 for $696 is good value, and $30 for 15GB data on Telstra is pretty good value, so I'm happy with it overall. Annoying that I actually have to pay for Netflix and Google Play Music now, though.

    DO NOT go to Lyca

    • +1. Their internet is terrible, and their service even worse. They might be alright for what they advertise on the packet (ie, cheap international calls) but certainly not a daily driver.

    • No MMS, you have to load $10 Credit just to activate iMessage (on top of your unlimited deals)

Clunky activation, long waits for ordinary service - the only positive is that it was cheap

  • Suggested Kogan

    Kogan added

  • Suggested Coles Mobile

My last recharge ends on the 18th so I'm currently tossing up what new provider to go for. I'm after preferably unlimited texts and calls with around 2-3gb data so I have enough every month. Live around Geelong so coverage generally pretty safe, but I think I want either the wholesale telstra or optus networks since they're at least second best!
After looking through woolworths, coles, aldi, boost, amaysim, telstra, optus.. to me it seems that Coles $20 option on optus4gnetwork for unlimited txt+calls and 3gb data over 35 days is a really good deal that matches my needs - anyone had experience with them?
No rollover like most but beats out, say, amaysim's 28 day 2.5gb deal IMO!
