Nvidia Shield TV Related Queries

After much deliberation, I finally bought myself a Nvidia Shield TV on Amazon. Now i'm not a fan of paying for my games and apps (pirate for life) unless they are dirt cheap so I would like to know if:

  • All Nvidia shield TV supported games/apps work on the shield tv if they are sideloaded? Can the same .apk files installed on an android phone work on the shield tv? Or are they different in some way (like how some apps have a different .ipa files for iPads and iPhones)

  • Hard Drives connected to the shield show up on the network. Like for example, can I access the contents of a shield connected hard drive from my laptop when connected to the same wifi network?

  • If I decide to run a Plex media server on the shield, would the on board storage (16 gb) fill up quickly with plex metadata? Can this be fixed by allowing a usb flash drive to be formatted and used as android internal memory?

Now I have googled all of the above and have got some vague answers but hope to maybe get some better insight from Shield users on OzB. Also, please feel free to share any other nvidia shield tv related tips/tricks :)

      Thanks anyways

Don't bother with a 16gb for Plex. I wanted that too.

Plex had to put data internally, and to my knowledge that hasn't changed.

Pirating games just quietly is a bit pathetic these days. Given how cheap they actually are…

    • The internal storage can be easily fixed with one of the spare portable hard drives i got lying around. And I don't mind paying for really cheap games but $14 for an android game is not something I would do :)

Plex server on shield is amazeballs.
Can read off Networked storage device and external usb plugged into shield fine. You can merge two access points so shows as same library for easy access and toggle watched etc. Also great to send stuff to rest of your house ie chromecast etc

Shield can adopt 2nd usb thumb drive as external storage (128gb max) to cover metadata and the odd game.

I'm yet to try access shield usb hdd/added usb hdd from network but should be poasible.

Just wish the shield game subscription service worked down under as it would make for cheap gaming and utilise power of shield without need of gaming rig on your netwotk.

    • Were you able to modify or add to the networked storage device? I read somewhere that reading data is possible but not writing into the connected drive.

Why does Plex still say otherwise? I can't see proof the metadata can be moved to anywhere.

Unless of course you have a tiny Plex library, 16gb won't handle it.

      • In the same link that you shared, read the section "Expanding Internal Storage"

      • Thanks for sharing that link anyways. It was useful to me because it confirmed:

"Mounted network shares are writable since the "SHIELD Experience Update 5.2" firmware release."

I was looking for that answer :)

        • I think there's more to it….

          https://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tv/general/guide-t36…

I have also read on the Plex forums regularly that despite this it's still highly advisable to choose the Pro with 500gb still. Issues arise with the 16gb.

        • @scuderiarmani: Well its a given that on board storage will be better performing that external/add-on storage but i'm sure this can suit my purposes and in case problems arise, i'm fairly confident I can troubleshoot and fix the issues myself.

My device should reach in 2 weeks. Can probably give a better opinion then!

        • @scuderiarmani: UPDATE: Running a Plex server on the 16gb nvidia shield with an old USB3 500gb portable hard drive formatted as internal storage. Have been abusing it over the holidays (up to 3 streams in the network simultaneously) and it worked great so far!

        • @0FoxGiven:
Is the media on that 500gb drive? Or is that solely for Plex's messy configuration folders?

Have a relative that wants to set up a Plex server, thinking if this is the easiest way.

        • @scuderiarmani: Yup the media is on that drive

        • @0FoxGiven:
Thanks, are the Plex files too?

I don't think 500gb will be adequate for them so likewise the plex files will be alot larger.

        • @scuderiarmani: Yup the plex files are on that as well. Like I said, I use the portable hard drive as Internal storage. You could connect a higher capacity hard drive to it but 500gb was more than enough for my purposes as my media files currently take up only 200gb of that space.

        • Correct me if I'm wrong - if an external drive can be mounted as internal storage then I would think it is probably better to go with the 16GB version? That way the OS resides on a solid state drive so it should perform better?

I'm considering getting a 16GB version too, paired with a USB3 drive for the Plex cache. My media will be on a NAS. No point getting the pro, methinks…

I am running Plex Server on a 16GB Shield with 128GB SD card expanded storage.

You can set your internal storage to be accessible over the network. I think it should work for external USB drives, but haven't tried myself.

  • Make sure to download rules of survival. You are welcome.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.netease.ch…

    • Screens looks nice! Will download and check it out today.

Really looking for some Shield TV compatible android games that look good on the big screen. So far I only liked Real Racing (the graphics, not the game as such) and Trine 2. Let me know if you know of others. Thanks!

      • I guess critical ops is another. It is basically a counterstrike clone. I personally don't like it but others swear by it.

Bullet force was my go to but rules of survival is now my staple until Vainglory 5v5.

They have some other PUBG clones by came company Netease but they are more catered to the asian market and is a bit jerky and lag spikey for me.

Rules of Survival is definitely one of the best atm but there are a lot of good battle royale games now it is crazy.

I guess bomb squad is kind of fun if you like arena type multiplayer but it was a bit lacking for me.

        • Did you actually play this on the nVidia Shield TV? I downloaded and installed the game but The game does not recognize the shield controller.

        • @0FoxGiven: no sorry. Only on my Huawei Mediapad M3.

But I did manage to play some other shooter games on my nvidia shield tab while I had it with my nvidia shield controller. Has some preset game pad mapping as well.

I think I tried bullet force, shadowgun deadzone and bomb squad. If the two are the same you should be able to map any game that uses touch screen with on screen buttons to your controller.

        • @AlienC: just to save me some time… do any of the games you've mentioned, actually work with the shield + controller? have you checked?! cheers
