    • +1

Showing as $48 at First Choice as well if you want/need a couple of cases and want to make use of the Amex discount.

    • Plus free delivery

Edit: looks like it has expired…

    • First choice price match too for the extra 10c haha.

    • For AMEX discount it is spend $100. Anything worth buying for the short $4?

      • +4

A bottle of their finest and cheapest wine?

        • -5

          Finest or cheapest. Pick one.

        • +1

          or a bag

I love the reason OP posted this deal but this brew has not been same since JS sold to one of the bigs. Shame really.

    • +12

Unless you were drinking it in 1828 then it has been owned by Tooheys / Lion since it's relaunch in 1999. The old Hahn Brewery was changed into the Malt Shovel Brewery to make Squires.

      • +1

Yes I recall sitting in a tasting session with Chuck when the beers from JS were original recipe. Those were the days.

        • +1

Yeah I remember doing that as well when I lived in Canberra many moons ago. Chuck was great!

        • Well 150 lashes wasn't around back then so it's not really a relevant point.

Of course the quality dropped, but unfortunately he needed to otherwise they woulda gone bust. It was the only good mass produced beer available on the early 2000's, and paved the way for the Aussie microbrewery market. Good on him. Don't know what he was thinking with Hahn superdry tho…

  • +4

Good price but there are much better beers out there.

    • +2

      like?

      • +6

        My favs
        Sierra Nevada
        Karl Strauss
        4 pines
        Burleigh 28

        • +2

          Not at $47 though :(

Although I paid a lot less than $47 for Sierra Nevada when I was last in the US. Pretty well all I drank :)

        • +3

at $85 a case, I have no doubt they are better!

        • @tightm8:

He asked if there were better beers out there.. I guess he didn't specify price ;)

        • +2

@tarken: How do you rate Hop Thief? Currently $48 at FCL

        • +2

Hop Thief is as good as IPA's at 80 a carton. Easily the best Squire.

        • +5

@dajackal: That's a good price. In my opinion their Hop Thief APA is much better than their 150 Lashes IPA. One of my favourites actually. As I'm a bit of a hop head, I like the complex citrus-like hop flavours and I just don't get that from 150 Lashes.

Unfortunately my other favourites are usually fairly pricey. Pirate Life IPA is like nectar of the gods but costs an arm and a leg. Gage Roads Little Dove NWPA is very good too but also expensive.

I used to really like Little Creatures Pale Ale but tastes like they changed the recipe after selling out to the Japanese. Barely any of the signature fresh hop flowers taste they used to have.

        • +1

          @dajackal:

I would definitely pick Hop Thief over 150. It's quite similar to the American pale ales.

        • @thtol: thanks! value proposition sorted!

        • @tarken: Thanks! I've tried both Hop Thief and 150 and definitely prefer the Hop Thief. Easy decision at $48 - just wondering if there were other APA/IPA's worth trying in this kind of price range.

        • +3

@dajackal: You could try Gage Roads Sleeping Giant IPA. It's currently on special at BWS for $58. I actually work just down the road from their brewery. They make some good beers, probably best in WA right now.

        • +1

@Ryballs: I heard that is more of an English IPA, so basically just a golden ale. It is also not highly rated.

        • +1

@Fobsessive: Yeah it's not the greatest beer but dajackal wanted one in same price range and it's not bad. My favorite beer of theirs by far is Little Dove, which is rated much better but also costs a fair bit more.

        • dans was $47.95 for the hop thief also …. must be to under cut 1st choice ……it’s what i drink when it’s under $50 and i want a beer with flavour but can’t afford an IPA … goes well with food e.g fish n chips, burgers, pies, etc …. i have wine with steaks .

        • @Ryballs: I might have to try the Hop Thief, I've been drinking 150 Lashes and it's good, but it's not the best. I had a carton of Stockade Duel Hoppy Lager which was absolutely delicious, but I can't justify the $80 per carton price point.

        Some of my recent favs:
Akasha Tradewind Lager, Feral Boris Russian Imperial Stout, Wolf Of The Willows JSP (smoked porter), Boatrocker Epice (Belgian Blonde), Mr Banks IPA, Venom Golden Ale, Cavalier Pale Ale, Green Beacon Windjammer IPA, Mornington IPA, Exit Milk Stout

    • You know what they say about opinions…

      • They are like a''holes… everyone has one.

    • So what?

My favourite part is watching ozbargainers talking about buying beer, real ozbargainers make it themselves!

    • +3

That's what I do - doesn't come out much cheaper if you go down the old Beer kit method once you start buying better kits, replacing yeasts, buying hops, buying crystal etc etc - still gives you a tingle down there when you're drinking your own brew though.

    • Can't make Trappist ales though!

  • +2

If you have flybuys there is an offer available for 2000 points and free delivery for min $50 spend. Prob targeted.

    • +1

Also Dan Murphy's is owned by Woolworths so I assume you mean First Choice?

  • Does anyone know if it's possible to get one of the $10 counter specials (for >= $10 spend) for online purchases?

    • I won't say no, but the point of those is to get you to spend $10 more because it's right in front of you. You can normally get a better deal on the product by buying the products in a larger quantity or on sale.

  • whats normal price?

    • +1

bout $60 - usually on special for $53

  • +3

James Squire range going for $48 at First Choice Liquor.

I'd pay an extra 10c for their Hop Thief.

    • Reckon Hop Thief is the choice over the Golden (Chancer) /Pale (One Fifty) /Tropical (Swindler)?

      • +5

Hop Thief is easily the best of the squire range and the best IPA you're gonna get for that price. If you want something light and tropical for the warm season then maybe you could go for Swindler.

        • Isn't Hop Thief a pale ale?

        • APA now that I've checked. Still a lot more flavour than a regular pale ale.

        • has the bitterness and flavour of an IPA but not the alcohol content so when on special it’s better than paying $70 for a slab of IPA …. not sure why we see so few IPAs discounted to the buy it now price bracket …. alcohol isn’t taxed at a rate that justifies the price difference.
might be it doesn’t move in big volumes as it’s more a flavoursome beer than light and refreshing.

      $47.95 at Dan's.

Want to use my Amex deal at first choice anyway, but still gotta decide what.

  • ordered one for the fridge. got international guests coming over, so want to do a have a selection avail.. any other recommendations for aussie beers?

    • Fosters

      J/k!

I like Cricketers Arms Pale Ale. Good tropical beer for the hot days. Price is usually reasonable.

      • $10 a 6er at FC when spending $10+ in store currently!

    • They will say the Aussie beer is shit if you treat them with One Fifty Lashes

  • +1

OK I hate to be the whinging ungrateful immigrant here, but gosh I miss those overseas alcohol prices when $47 for a slab of beer is considered a bargain…

    Nice beer though!

    • Yep, cheap for anything drinkable. Most stuff I end up buying is close to $25 a 6 pack or $80 a carton. Best is head down the local with a squealer or growler and grab something on tap.

    • Yep. Ridiculous here in Australia

  • Looks like Sail and Anchor has relabelled their products like LC did recently. My local Dans has their PA and others for $43.95

  • +1

"I need a good supply to make it through Xmas day with my crazy family, hopefully I won't remember a thing. Cheers!!"

    ain't nocure for love

  • Furphy is the same price. Job done.

  • You know what beer I really miss from Dan's, is "Pistonhead". Well priced and nice flavour, and it was in cans which I like (can fit more in the recycling plus more fun to open). When's Pistonhead coming back?!

    • It is no longer available on Boozebud either. Maybe no more Aussie distribution?

    • That's a shame. I enjoyed their Amber beer.

    • also cans are 375 ml instead of 330 ml so you get 10% more beer for the same price.

the 330ml bottle is such crap …. they should just do 375ml like mainstream beers.

  • Squire range is also $48 a slab at bws with a woolworths docket.
Or a 6pack price as well but didn't pay attention to that.

  • +1

Expired, my local shop is showing $49.99
