  • I used to love this Meguires product. Recently made the switch to this though: http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/Bowden-s-Own-Wax-Wa…

Both really good products - but my preference is the Bowden's Own :)

    • any particular differences that made you switch? my bottle of meguiar's is running low soon so will be looking to get another.

      Cheers

    • What made you switch?

I religiously use the megs ultimate, but never tried any Bowden's before

      • +9

        What made me switch:

Bowden's own is a bit more sun friendly and doesn't leave water marks.

I find that the shine is a tiny bit more on the bowden's own (although I haven't used the meg's in a while, so I don't know if I'm biased)

Lubrication - the Bowden's own, suds up a bit more and so is technically more safe.

Finally - no salts in the wash. That's a big thing for Bowden's Own (where they say that it doesn't 'dry up' the paint).

Oh one other thing: Bowden's Own is Australian, and I feel like the products are designed with Aus climate in mind/I like supporting Australian companies :)

        • +9

          Bowden's Own is Australian

That sold it for me. Glad to support our locals!

        • @montorola: Let me know once you've tried it, what your thoughts are.

I fidn the Bowden's cloths are my favourite things actually. Their "drop bear" cloth is really good to dry with as a final step http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/Bowden-s-Own-Drop-B…

Highly recommend this more than the washing soap.

        • @Tech and cars:

Massive hardon for Bowden's Own products.
Really good quality and most of their products are made in Oz too

        • @Tech and cars:

What are our thoughts on Autoglym? They've been my primary go to for washes and polishes/waxes. I find their stuff pretty good and you can often find it on sale with super cheap.

        • @xuuj:

Autogylm - really good company/products. I've used their bodywork shampoo and I like it a lot. Smells nice, is cheap $5 on sale for 500ml, suds up really well. Can't fault it to be honest.

They've also got a wheel protectant (prevents brake dust), that I like to use - but it's expensive..

Their Polishes are probably my favoruite products though. Super resin polish does amazing things for faded red cars. I haven't tried their waxes, but I'm sure it would be good.

Overall, I'd say in my personal opinion: Bowdens/Autoglym, then close second is meguires (Ultimate range) in terms of product preferences. Doesn't hurt to try the Bowden's and I've been continuing to buy their products due to it being an Australian Company.

          Hope that helps.

          @Tech and cars:

I run RDA extreme pads, stop bloody well but despite the "low" dust touting they are a shambles. Wheels used to look like crap in 300km.
For the last 2 months ive been applying Bowdens Own Fully Slick on the wheels as well after giving the car a wash. I washed the car last Saturday driven about 650km and I can just start to see a bit of brake dust forming on the spokes.
Best thing its $15-20 for a 750ml bottle, Bowdens stuff is glorious.

        • +1

          @gryphn:

Yeah, I actually fully slick my wheels now. Super happy with it. I didn't want to suggest it as I sound like a bowdens crazy fanatic with an extremely biased opinion. lol

        • @Tech and cars:

Whats a good recommendation for a wheel cleaner that won't stain the wheels? I feel my wheels have slight stains on them from tar and the stuff, but I don't really want to use acidic stuff on them. Water and soap doesn't get the stain off.

        • +1

Suds actually has nothing to do with lubricity or cleaning ability. Suds is spent/wasted detergent. I blame the manufacturers that add pointless foaming agents for this common misconception

        • @xuuj:

I use simple green 10-15% mixed with water in a squirt bottle. Spray on and let it soak a bit, sponge, spray again and let it soak while I set up the high pressure washer. Rinse off before it dries. No issues on polished alloy wheels come out looking very clean for very little effort.

Dirty cheap and if you believe the marketing less harmful to the environment.

        • If you haven't tried after glow it might get you all the way…

        • @montorola: Go watch some of their videos, most are by the owner who you could see tearing around in a VN Commodore doing burnouts on a saturday night…

        • @Hellman109: lol, is that a good thing or a bad thing? :P Dan seems to have a nice car though - I think he owns an RS3 from what I can gather from the videos…

I've got the wax for this brand. It's really good. Smells beautiful which sounds weird.

  • At first I thought megir watch

  • does it mean wash & wax so u dont need to wax it afterwards?

    • +1

It's like any other wash and wax product
It's not a proper wax but has a waxy sort of finish that will only last a lot short time compared to a real wax application

Thanks OP - just bought 2!!!

I use this for my daily car. Together at 1:10 ratio with a $30 MJJC Foam Lance for a quick wash.

    • The MJJC foam Lance looks interesting. Where's the best place to get it other than eBay?

    • does the MJJC foam lance do anything different to say a Karcher equivalent?

      • Sorry I haven't used the Karcher one before. Might foam up better but probably not worth getting another foam Lance if you already have the Karcher one.

      • I've got 2 Karcher pressure cleaners myself so have absolutely nothing against Karcher.

If you want a proper foam lance, just forget about the Karcher one and just fork out more for the proper foam lance - you'll thank me later.

How do I know? Been there and done that…

        • thanks for all the responses, so something like MJJC will do?

        • @dishz:

Maybe he meant proper as in the MTM PF22 Professional foam lance that can with stand up to 5000psi. The MJJC will do, as lots of company have the same one for $100 eg ZAS foam lance, Concours PA foam lance, MTM foam lance (non pro).

        • @Wantone: Yep PF22 is epic. I use way less product with this foam cannon. Its really worth it in the long run.

  • I use this stuff. I love it man. But you need to use a shamwois (or however you spell it) to avoid watermarks. But hot damn does it gleam if you put the effort in!

    • +3

      NEVER shamwow - PLEASE!

      ALWAYS microfibre - ONLY.

I bought the bowdens to try : )

  • slightly off topic…but how to safely remove baked on brake dust from painted alloy wheels?

i've tried "Armor All Wheel Cleaner" without success.

    • +1

      I use this one www.waxit.com.au/products/waxit-wheel-cleaning-kit
It goes red as it reacts to the iron, then pressure spray it off.

Unfortunately this is an average product at best. For well maintained wheels car shampoo or an APC is a much cheaper option

For heavily contaminants wheels besides chrome and aluminium an acid wheel clear like Meguiar's Wheel Brightner will far outperform Wheely Clean

        • Missed the "baked on" part.

If the brake dust has been sitting on the wheels for a while then Bowdens Wheely Clean won't be a good option. As 4agte said, you will need an acid based cleaner. Didn't realize Meguiars Wheel Brightner was acid based and I don't think it's a readily available off the shelf product - at least when I was looking for it.

Autoglym Clean Wheels is a readily available acid based wheel cleaner you can try.

As with all acid based wheel cleaners - follow the instructions to the T.

Soap + sponge works fine for me…Lasts MUCH MUCH longer than wheel wash sprays that are roughly $20 a bottle, and gives you 5-10 car washes…

Wheel washing products are expensive and I feel like they are a waste of money.

    • Meguiar's Wheel Brightner for wheels which are neither chrome or aluminium. It's an acid cleaner but not super aggressive. Common sense should still be applied when using. Most Iron decontamination products only remove iron particulars and have no cleaners in them.

I buy those 80cent no-thrills 1L dish detergents, and sprinkle it on the car during rain.

Beat that value, I dare you!

    • +1

Lmao you're the laziest ozbargainer I've ever met haha

    • +2

Dish washing liquid will harm your clearcoat over time. Spending thousands on a respray because of clear coat failure offers no value at all. Better taking it to a scratch bay to wash it

      • That's why I buy all my cars second-hand with bad paint jobs. The worse, the better. I have an affinity to that rusty look : )

        • +1

          Natural patina, nice

      • Dish wash doesn't directly damage clear coat, it does however strip off everything protecting it, meaning it gets more damage from rocks, the sun, etc.

Great public price for Meguiar's Ultimate at under $20.

I usually buy the Meguiar's Gold Class Wash at Costco when it's on sale (It currently is @ $28.99 for 3.8L / $7.63 Per Litre). By comparison the Ultimate Wash & Wax at SCA for $19.49 works out to be $13.73 Per Litre not including Cashrewards. FWIW I find the results with the latter slightly better.

  • Still the worst car shampoo I've ever tried. Just try brands like angelwax, carpro, chemical guys, 3D or even Gyeon and I guarantee you would never go back to Meguiar's Ultimate Wash & Wax…

    • +2

The Meguiars product isn't for enthusiasts, it's for your average Joe who wants to use one product to wash a car and provide a bit of synthetic wax protection. Those other brands are more expensive and typically don't combine a wash and wax in one product. They're for people who already have paint protection via a coating, sealant, or paste wax. In that case, the shampoo should ideally not have any additives to provide gloss or wax.

      • I'm aware of that but as I said I tried Meguiar's Ultimate Wash & Wax and it was garbage as a shampoo and didn't work as a wax either. It's waste of money that's what it is… What's the point of saving money if what you get is terrible product? Most shampoos are still around 20$ mark and are highly concentrated so they last very long. I would rather get decent shampoo and basic wax and it would perform 10x better….

        • Wash and then wax is way more time then most are willing to spend.

I spend way more time then most washing and protecting and waxing and sealing my car but honestly most wouldn't spend 1/4 the time I do.

  • +1

I used my $5.00 Club Rewards credit and bought a bottle of Gold Class last week for $ 13.88, love that stuff, used the Ultimate W & W, cant say I was too pleased, i felt the Gold class left a better finish on a dark blue ute.

  • So how is this better than the cheapies one..

    • This has wax in it, which adds some protection if you never wax/seal your car yourself, if you do wax/seal then you dont need any "gold" or "ultimate" one as they add what you don't particular need especially if you use a spray wax after drying.

If you want a one step wash type setup its way better because of the protective layer it adds.

  • All AmorAll products are shit, and the only one worse than their car wash is their so-called spray-on Protectorant, which actually attracts dirt.Get wise and use Autoglym Bumper and Trim Gel as well as their Super Resin car polish. You heard it here…

    Looks like back to $33
