    Q
Hi, Is this an original Viofo product?

    By MGy Nov-21/2016 08:11:44

    A
    Hello MGy,

This is not an original Viofo product. Thank you for your attention.

    • Keen eye….. wtf?

    • +3

No not a Viofo, but according to https://dashcamtalk.com/b40-a118/ GearBest sell two versions the Viofo and Unbranded both of which get their tick of approval regarding which ones to buy - See quote below.

There are a few places to purchase this camera from. Price is usually under $60 from > > China (sometimes under $50) and a bit more expensive from Amazon.

      For the Capacitor Version (A118C)

      Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.ca, Amazon.de
      Gearbest (VIOFO)
      Gearbest (Unbranded)
Spy Tec on Amazon.com and on their site (US based seller)

      • +1

How much is the price difference between this and genuine Viofo anyway?

        • +2

GearBest no longer sell the Viofo but when they did there was only a few dollars difference between the two.

        • +2

          I have purchased 5 x A118C cameras for myself/family both generic A118C and Viofo A118C dashcams.

I can confirm that The Viofo camera's are much better quality video with a sharper picture but you generally pay more with the Viofo cameras than the generic non branded ones. I would get the Viofo version if within your budget (or on a great deal) or overwise the generic camera is certainly a great lower cost option.

As far as reliability, I have never had any problems with any of them installed over the last year and half (even in Perth 45 degree heat). The A118C is a great style camera that integrates well in the car so doesn't stand out.

        • @m in perth: Thanks. Great review!

  • +2

I use these in both my cars, no problems yet after 12months. Quality is good as well!

I nearly got one but I saw it's really best to properly wire the thing in for power permanently - doing that looks quite awkward in general, pulling bits off the side of the interior and what have you.

Also I googled there's an S version 2 model or something, Sony lense, better night vision and GPS or something.

      • +1

        what have you yeah. something.

  • Got one for my work vehicle. Didnt want to spend too much and have been looking at this one for a while.

  • Dam just brought one two days ago, will they refund the difference?

    • +4

      Where did you bring it?

  • Thanks - got one to replace the one the Queensland police seized from me as evidence; I don't think I'm going to get it back anytime soon…

    • A memory card or copy of the file wasn't good enough for them?!

      • +3

I'm not complaining - I was about five hours into being interviewed for unlawful homicide when I remembered I had the dash cam.

They also took my truck, the clothes I was wearing and my phones. They could only keep the car for seven days, the phones took four months to get back. My clothes and dash cam are being kept as the investigation is ongoing.

        • +1

Well.. how could I not buy one after hearing that!

        • +7

@cyssero: Best $40 I ever spent. I tell people to buy one now as a public service announcement.

One detective commented that the video was better quality than some bank recordings of armed robberies he'd seen.

Here is a video I took with this camera (note:- Facebook compresses the hell out of them and the actual video is clear enough to get the rego and see who's driving.)

          https://www.facebook.com/robert.dobb.1/videos/o.527827413943…

        • @iratepirate: So what hapenned? You had a big bingle, they didn't believe your side of the story? They finally grabbed your dash cam and you're now in (less) trouble?

        • @hamwhisperer: Don't really want to go into it as it's not over yet, but it was nothing to do with traffic offenses.

I had made a statement to the police as to my whereabouts and movements and the only alibi I had was a three year old…until I remembered the dash cam.

        • My clothes

          Why? Questionable fashion?

        • @iratepirate:

          https://www.facebook.com/robert.dobb.1/videos/o.527827413943…

Is this your fb account? You're brave to use your name if it is. Some of these truckies aren't the most friendly bunch when being confronted over their driving behaviour.

        • @whooah1979: :) I know Dexter is a clothing line, but I don't think blood splatter will ever take off as a fad.

Not my real name - google "bob dobb". I am an ordained minister of his though.

        • @iratepirate:

          blood splatter

This sounds interesting. Let's see what mr google have to say.

  • any good compared with G1W-CB?

    • +2

Video very similar, but the A118C is much smaller and easier to mount discreetly. Also the 3M tape isn't going to randomly fall off or move about like suction cup + ball joint. If you watch any dashcam vids you'll notice in an impact that some fall off entirely, some change angle etc.

      • This is the most useful comment if not only under this deal. Thanks. I am looking to upgrade my g1w=cb to something that can record better vid quality.

      • video quality very similar? my G1W-CB is ok but not so great during the daytime but useless for night recording. Hope there is one with infra red etc. for better quality.

  • Ordered one for the mrs then went to order another one for my rear view but code now expired?

    • still works for me

    • +1

Still working for me, perhaps create a new account if you're having issues?

      • Yep created a second account and worked. Thought if would allow me 2 per account instead of 2 in the one order

  • +2

this is quite old and out dated, not even genuine viofo. still thinking buying a better dashcam for my parents, hope its not too late. anyne recommeded a local stock with warranty?

  • Thanks OP. Since ordered one as a rear dashcam. Got the A119S as the front so hoping to get one cheaper one for the rear and this looks like the best one for below $40!

  • You need to think twice to buy from gearbest. If you get a defect product, then it will cost you more on shipping to return the product.

  • +1

    This or th xiaomi?

  • Bummer - code expired :(

  • +1

Received both my cams yesterday. Great value considering the cost. Quality is good but not as good as my Viofo A119s but is perfect as a rear view camera.
