TPG (also iiNet, Internode and most others?) NBN 25/5Mbps Users - Free Upgrade to 50/20Mbps

2410

So only relevant to TPG users on NBN 25Mbs plans (although maybe other ISPs have done the same?). Given they are a popular ISP and this is most popular NBN speed that should be a lot of us.

TPG has scrapped this tier and the 50Mbps tier is the same price. However upgrade is not automatic, so you need to login to your account and change to the new equivalent.

https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2684867#…

Lets see if it makes a difference, my real speed (http://beta.speedtest.net) is 19.8/4.9 at the moment

UPDATE 2PM, looks like just been updated, now reporting 43.5/17.6.

  • I went up to 36mbps for no extra cost (from 25)
    Thanks!!!!

  • Here is Dodo's current stance:

Hi, I currently have a 25MBps NBN plan with Dodo. I have seen that TPG, IINet, Internode and other Australian service providers are upgrading their customers on the 25mbps plan to 50mbps plan for free. Is this something Dodo will be doing?

    Ice (Dodo Customer Service)
We don't have any updates yet regarding that. Our customers can upgrade for free but the monthly fee will definitely go up.

Our customers can upgrade for free but the monthly fee will definitely go up.

      Makes sense in ISP speak.
You can change your plan without paying a penalty fee, but you will have to pay the extra monthly cost associated with the increased speed per our standard offers.

Damn you OzB. Wanted to keep this quiet. Now my POI will be overloaded.

  • I'm on the "NBN FTTN SL Bundle Boost" I can't figure out if I qualify, let alone how to upgrade.

    • Go into My Account, and then Change Plans

      • Okay, that's the how. Thanks.

But so I qualify? The way TPG labels their plans and removes them/renames them sometimes always confuses me. The plan I'm on is 25mbps, I'm sure and we have home line included.

        • Of course you would qualify, just choose the plan you want.

        • @Gilby15: Cheers.

  • If I am off contract if I downgrade from 100 -> 50 will I still be off contract? (there support takes forever..)
My speed is never above 50 anyways…

    • Yep, that is correct.

  • Went from 24mbps to 47mbps (FTTP) with TPG, pretty happy with that.

  • The wholesale cost for a "100mbps at all times" plan is
    $65
    +
    (97.5 * $15.25)

    = ~$1551.88

Then you've got all the other costs that you'd have to pay for + GST

  • Jeez I wasn't looking forward to the NBN going by all the complaints but at it's worst is better than my current 17mb/.08mb @ $120pm but adsl offnet so max download speed off peak is 1.7mb … peak about 0.5 with costant drop outs… arse end piggy backed off multiple rims.. TPG and Iinet wont touch my street for ADSL 2 unlimited only adsl 1 .. and only unlimited is optus at twice the price of the competitors..

  • I'm with iiNet & chose a 25/5 plan. Due to the node I connect through being about 1km away. Currently maxing out the connection. I can now upgrade to a 50/20 Mbps plan for the same price. Even though it will only gain me at most an extra 1 Mbps up and 5 mbps down.

  • Still no 50Mbps on FW, though its probably for the better.

Thank you OP and all the boys and gals, on OZBARGAIN, i am with iprimus, was unaware of the change, Have now spoken to them and had my plan changed to the 50 mbps plan at same cost of my 25/5 plan.

Merry Xmas to the lot of you.

  • Just signed up last week. I wonder

  • Presumably you have to change to a current plan to do this? So in my case I'd lose unmetered Netflix. That might be offset by larger quotas. I'll have to look. Just saying that it might be worth while taking a breath before you hit that button.

    For people who are with TPG and on 25Mbps plan. Customer service can be reached on 131423 (option 3 + 1) Monday - Friday 8am - 9pm Saturday - Sunday 9am - 6pm Public Holidays 9am - 6pm

Ask for a free plan upgrade from 25Mbps to 50Mbps.

  • Seems to be only for existing customers on 25mbs. For everyone else, they appear to have changed the three tiers to 12mbs, 50mbs, and 100mbs. So they've more than halved the speed of the previous lowest tier but kept it the same price. I guess they can't justify bumping people down, so they put them up.

I've been waiting for them to install HFC in my area but it's almost two months over the announced schedule so far, so although I'm pre-ordered looks like I've been screwed by the delay more than I thought. :(

    • Nope. The lowest tier was 10Mbps, now replaced by 12Mbps plan. 25Mbps was the middle tier, now replaced by 50Mbps plan.

      • Thanks for the correction. What was the original price of the 10mbs plan? The new 12mbs plan is the same as the previous 25mbs plan at $60/month (the one I preordered).

edit: Looking at the Wayback Machine capture in July, it was three tiers of "up to" 12Mbs, 25Mbs, and 100Mbs, at $50/month for the 12 and $60/month for the 25. So they actually added $10/month to the 12 plan, and replaced the 25 with a 50 plan at $10/month more.

Hmmm, I'll have to look around again to see if it's still a good deal. I hope I can cancel my pre-order if not.

10Mbps plan was $59.99 per month. Now replaced by 12Mbps plan(2Mbps or 20% theoretically speed increased).

25Mbps plan was $69.99 per month. Now replaced by 50Mbps plan(25Mbps or 100% theoretically speed increased). I was on this plan, and I have called for a free upgrade.

100Mbps plan was 89.99 per month. Now stays the same.

        • @langthang:
Ah, apologies. I see now where the confusion is from my end. You are correct.

    Thx OP.

Downgraded mine from XL 50 to SL 50 (+ oztalk) & save $10! Instant change of plan within a minute & Speed Test looks more or less the same around 48/17 Mbps.

    • Thanks for highlighting this one Yummy =)

For anyone who is still on the old XL 50 Plan - Switch to the new SL 50!

You will save $10 AND also get included calls to mobile numbers, which wasn't previously included on the XL 50 + Oz Talks

  • Awesome, thanks!

Just went from silver to gold (Internode).

  • Does anyone know if Aussie BB is doing the same? No point because I’m getting less than 5mbps as it is but when we first signed up they had us on the 50/25 and it did work better so either the tower wasn’t rooted back then or the speed increase allowed for better internetting somehow 😣

  • What is the guaranteed minimum connection speed on a shit copper pair at about 820 metres from my future [in place but dark] node?

Is there a 100% guaranteed minimum connection speed?

    Thank you

  • Do you get a confirmation once the plan is changed? I got an email saying that they have received my request but I don't know how long I need to wait.

    • My upgrade was done in about an hour with TPG. I have no idea about the others ISPs.

  • Mmm.. I've been with internode for a long time and I'm already on the 50/20 gold paying $84.95pm. On this plan I currently get unmetered Netflix, fetch TV, & others. If I change to the current 50/20 gold pan, it's the same speeds @ $74.99 but all my unmetered content becomes metered.

  • +1

May I ask if Belong is included ?

    Thanks

  • Thanks OP
    Done

  • are you all seeing this just before confirming? "10.6Mbps typical evening speed #"

    • Hey if it helps, thats just how they are advertising now. it used to say 50/25 or something, but people were complaining because we weren't getting what we were paying for, so this is more of a realistic speed. Then plan you'd sign to is the NBN50.

      • cheers andrgram

  • damn….nothing happening to Fibre cribs :( wouldnt mind the extra buck in my pocket.

  • DId anyone else have TPG change the billing cycle as a result of the speed upgrade?

    • Yes, the Plan Change Team did advice me there will be a change on date however "prorata" is applied. After an hour of so my Model showed my DSL seed is 55/22. rebooted Router and new speed applied. cheers all!!

3 of the Telstra NBN bundles now have the 50Mbps speed package. By the looks of my account, I'm still on the 25. Not sure if I'd be able to change over for free

EDIT: on live chat. Looks like they won't give it. Only new customers to the packages, and they will be montioring existing customers over 30 days, and if they find you aren't recieving the expected speeds they will provide the free speed boost, otherwise sucks to be an existing customer.

    • they will be montioring existing customers over 30 days, and if they find you aren't recieving the expected speeds they will provide the free speed boost

So if they can't give you the (lower) expected speeds, they'll give you even higher speeds that they probably wouldn't be able to give then?

Makes sense… but great way to screw over existing customers.

    • I had no problems in getting the free speed boost when visiting my local Telstra store (Garden City, Mt Gravatt QLD).

They first said they were currently doing a Christmas / Boxing day deal for 50% off any speed boost, which meant I could get 100/40 for $15 instead of $30. Then he realised that the 50/20 speed boost was actually free and recommended that I sign up for that instead.

      • Did you have to renew your contract at all? Or extend it?

        • Not that I know of, although I did get an email saying a new order had been submitted. If I get stung with recontract fees, I will be a very unhappy customer!

        • I'm not really worried about fees. But more of having to be on a contract longer. My contract has 12 months left out of a 12 month contract, and I wouldn't want it extending back to 24 months.

Will have to see what I can do by calling them up

  • Yep I called up TPG and they updated my plan to the 50 Mbps for free. They told me it could take up to 3 business days and that they wold email when it was activated.
2 hours later I got the email and bang I was updated to the new speed just like that.
Awesome deal for unlimited NBN for $69.95 a month
