  • Buy the most expensive item you can afford. It's a sure thing.

    • Spend all of your money.

      You don't need money.

  • You can't really go wrong with the VIOFO A119. Good picture quality and it can handle the Aussie summer.

You can easily install it yourself, just run the cables through the lining of your windscreen and door pillar.

    • Hey, is that link to zapals just a link for product description ? Or do you think this is the best price available out there ?
I want to buy one, so.

    • Damn, I can't believe this cost 4x more than my suggestion above. Do you think it's 4x better?

      • Tbh, no idea if it is 4 x better. I doubt it!

It's like saying is a German made Miele $2.5K dishwasher 2 x better than a German made Bosch $1.2K dishwasher? They both wash dishes. Right? How long is a piece of string?

The cam has been recommended by Dash Cams Australia and has also good reviews. Well … 6 has given it all 5 stars. Could it be a lemon?
I thought why waste money on rubbish whilst you can get quality from the start.
I don't know much about your recommendation but I should research it.

        Cheers

  • Guys my main problem with installing a dashcam is the power source. my a3’s cigarette port keeps supplying power even after the car is turned off. I fear this will leave me with a flat.

How do I overcome this situation?

    • If it is a windscreen/dashmount on a cradle, easy fix.

Remove the USB power on the back of the camera when you park and re-attach it when you jump back in to the car.
A little fiddling but it will save you money for any mods

I will be sh*tting myself if any post electrical work is to be done if I had a German car unless you go to Audi. … and you have to take a seat for the initial quote lol

      Cheers

At your own risk, you can buy a "fuse tap" that taps into your interior fuse box. It's plug and play, no cutting wires and can be removed easily.

The way it works is that you have to locate a fuse to a switched power, remove that fuse and put fuse tap in its place, put the original fuse into fuse tap. Your original circuit is still protected but now you have a lead to power the dashcam.

There are heaps of video on YouTube, such as this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8omZ545Cw1U

You just have to make sure to buy the compatible fuse tap, there are different sizes. And make sure that you can close the fuse box cover with the fuse tap inside, unless you are happy to cover the cover off.

  • Just set up my Xiaomi 70mai dash cam a few days ago. Have to say the picture quality is excellent and there is no screen or buttons to set it up you can just do it all with the app.

And they have been selling for around $35 aud on sale.

    • I bought one of these to replace my G1W-C which loses it's date after a couple of days of not driving and also corrupts the last file due to an idiosyncracy with the way my car shuts the power to the cigarette lighter port. I don't have those issues with the 70mai, but the video quality is significantly worse. I can't read a number plate on the video unless it is immediately in front of the car, whereas I can read the plates on the G1W-C recording 3 times that distance away. (Yes, I did pull off the little bit of plastic over the lens :) )

  • I use a decent dash cam made by Viofo (VIOFO A119 V2). It works well and there is a light for you to see when it is switched on. It is fairly small.

It has a capacitor based power supply which is helpful in Australia because batteries become bad in Australian hot weather.

It is like a 15 mins install. Installing this does not need any tools.

    • When did you buy this ? Do you know if it is on sale atm ?

      • +1

        Bought it on 6/27/17.

Works well. It is often on sale here but I could not locate any current sales.

  • Street Guardian SG9665GC V3 - good quality video both day and night.

  • G1w! Supper cheap too

  • Does no one here recommend the Blackvue DR750S 2CH? I understand that its super expensive but when s*** happens on the road, you want to make sure that the footage is nice and clear with none of that "technical issues" nonsense.

yes, also records audio inside car.
installed by new car dealer for me to run off car battery.
easy to retrieve video using smartphone.

      • Thanks for the reply, i'm thinking about getting it. I'm hooking it up to the fuse box to car battery as well.
What's your experience so far with the Blackvue? any issues?
do you reckon is a 10 yr investment? or will it die before then haha

        • +1

all fine so far, documentation not very good, does not explain well how to use functions, or use the blackvue cloud feature.
I am planning to keep it for at least 4-5 years, hopefully by then dashcam will be a car manufacturer option.

        • @plasmo:

          That sounds reasonable :)

Make up your own mind, but I went the DOD RC500S in my new Clubby.
Side by side, by side, by side comparison between the popular models.
Thinkware F770 vs Blackvue DR650S vs DR490L vs DOD RC500S
And the new, finally updated models.
Blackvue DR750S vs Thinkware F800 PRO vs DOD RC500S vs Viofo A119S

    • Hi there,
I was going to get the Blackvue but after seeing that video, i think i'll get the DOD.
How's it going for you? Any issues so far?
      cheers

        It's been fantastic.
Only thing, I'll turn off the traffic camera notifications. As well as known fixed cameras it also notes known areas that they set up mobile cameras, which in Melb metro is just about every second street. ;)
I have that built into the car's GPS/nav anyway.

        • I've been looking for a sample of what the speed cam sound on the DOD actually sounds like.. What's it like? Anything like the Thinkwise? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vq-BDFJwJ9k

I used to have a Uniden iGO (Which repors fixed speed cameras) but I sold it with my last car. since i have my new car, i've already had one ticket…. (My fault I know…) and feel like I need my little 'tap on the shoulder' back to check my speed. Pain in the arse when talking on the phone (plus I make a lot of work calls handsfree) but worth it if I can avoid another $260 fine..

        • Nice! How about the parking mode? i hear it doesn't do pre-buffering recording upon impact and has lots of bugs and software issues with the app.
Do you experience any of these issues?
The DOD RC500S 2CH is about $100 cheaper than the Blackvue DR750S 2CH, i'm assuming that's what helped you pull the trigger on the DOD as well.
          cheers

        • @lalala5042: didn't want to open the new topic . i m in market for dash cam as well. deciding between DOD and Blackvue . what did you end up with ?

        • @triplenet: i ended up getting the blackvue because of the “better” app support. the DOD is also good but i have no experience with it. the blackvue dr750s 2ch works fine for me, just haven’t got around to hardwiring it (lazy) haha
          good luck

        • @lalala5042: thanks for the reply . where do you buy it and how much does it cost you ? Looking at OZ site. the cheapest was around 420$ during christmas :(

        • @triplenet: i bought mine from autobarn. yea its really hard to find good sales, i paid around $550 with a 64gb micro sd card included. If you're patient, i would wait for the Christmas sale again.

  • Best or best value for money?
Sure you could pay $100's for awesome ones. I've had great success with sub-$50 genuine G1W's. I even left one unshaded in the blazing 40+ degree Adelaide summer and the plastic housing buckled majorly and it's still going strong 3 years later. (And one with a battery too, not capacitor…)
