Celebrity Chefs to Blame!

Thank you Celebrity chefs for totally stuffing up my usual seafood love of Balmain/morton bay bugs. I spent many, many years eating the wonderful bugs at $4-8 a kilo, then the restaurants and celebrity chefs jumped onboard and stuffed it up. Get rid of all cooking shows on TV i say:) From what i see they are now being over fished as im seeing smaller and smaller bugs. 20 years ago they all very big, haha i say ban the catching of them for 5 years to rebuild the stock and so i can catch them more fishing:)
I miss my big bugs for cheap!!!!

Just find some new hipster seafood? Maybe you can be the first to popularize bottom-feeding Carp eating! Mhmmm, muddy..

  • There is nothing left now that other markets have opened up! I used to have abalone rissoles all the time, im getting to old to dive for abalone now:) I say ban all commercial fishing in Australia, if you cant get it yourself you go without:) hehe

Same problem with pork belly, it has now become expensive for a fatty cut of meat.

And all the Asians buying pork bones………..it's the same price as a roast/kg these days, and you can't eat any of it……..

    • +1

Apparently back in the days, they were free and the butchers would just put then aside for people to take.

    • Lol have not seen pork at $35 a kilo:)

That must be a Sydney thing? Over here in Brisbane, if I buy over $50 worth of meat, the vietnamese butcher I frequent throws in a kilo of free pork bones or a dozen eggs. You can also buy them for like a couple bucks a kilo.

Same problem with chicken thigh (and breast for that matter) fillet. I don't watch TV so without knowing why I watched thigh and breast jump from $6.99 & $9/kg - invert in price - to settle for some time now on $10-$10.50 for thigh, and breast $9-$10. Unless there's some sale on, or special online-only price. Asked someone in store WHY and they told me it was being talked up on cooking shows.

    • Chicken thighs, lamb shanks too.

Not to mention all the TV shows glorifying ridiculously small portions.

I would hardly call 3 prawns a galaxy!

  • UM chicken is the same as wild caught seafood? yes i laugh thigh fillets are more expensive now than breast but its like silver{maybe copper} in a gold game compared to seafood:)

I had mates that ran a seafood place. His wife loved cooking shows, but she'd tell him whatever then main seafood of any episode is, and they'd pump the price up on that for a week or two as people would come in asking for whatever it is, and having no concept of the price would pay anything.

They would love it and power to them and respect. I have massive respect for fish mongers and id rather them make money and the fishos, but i wish my bugs still cheap:) they would laugh at that {the price of bugs over the years} also:)

When I worked as a butcher back in the 70's you couldn't give away Lamb cutlets, that is why they were sold crumbed and were the cheapest cut of lamb. Not any more….

    • So true! All the ethnics bought them. They always knew better

The same is happening to most of the old cheap seafoods. Gemfish was once a cheap and lovely fish to buy. Now its even hard to find. Nothing to do with celebterty chefs.

    Same with meats

Mind you the Getaway shows are giving away once lovely peaceful spots just for the sake of ratings.

So its TV in general that is ruining all of life's cheap little secrets

Exports of produce must shoulder some of the scarcity/inflation too.

It's nothing to do with celebrity chefs.

I remember offal being cheap, now things like tripe are more than some cuts of meat.

I just wish everyone in Australia would join Ozbargain, give up cooking, and buy Dominos all the time… So I could afford to buy real food from the supermarket again.

    • You like supermarket food:) So your not into fresh food!hahahaha
