Good for: Travelers seeking a pocketable camera that performs well in low light and offers good control over depth-of-field.

Not so good for: Peak action and sports photography. Those hoping to get a full day of shooting day with a single battery.

Conclusion: The Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II is a well-designed enthusiast compact that's a pleasure to use. It offers a versatile focal range, very good image quality, a large buffer for continuous shooting and 1080/60p video capture. Sharpening and noise reduction in JPEGs are heavy-handed, and battery life still needs work, but aside from those issues Canon has done an impressive job with the second iteration of the G7 X.

  • Why not an M3 for that sort money? M10 can be cheaper.
If not Canon, MFT m4/3. The Sony6000 too

    • It's about the size. Great portable camera and no need to deal with lenses.

    • this is for vlogging

i think this one can run on powerbank as well

  • Love this camera! Used it for my 1 month trip through Europe and it was great.

LOVE the touchscreen! Plus being able to do focus pulls from face tracking to an object is pretty neat!
The tilt up screen was a huge selling point for myself purely for that well aligned selfie, avoids paying the street husslers to take it, or risk a random person running off with it.

The 60fps video is awesome, and very stable dependant on the image stabilisation level you set, or post production effects added.
I shot video mostly and the battery held up well. I did take 3 batteries, just make sure you buy ones that specify they're compatible with this model or else you'll get a warning advising it's an aftermarket battery and no battery life indicator on screen. There's two manufacturers on eBay that advertise they work with MK2

    • Thanks for the 411. I have been on the fence for a while on whether I had to buy this camera or the Sony RX100M3, and now at this price I'm thinking to pull the trigger on it. Can you please tell me where you bought the batteries from? Are they genuine Canon batteries the ones you got, or aftermarket? Thanks in advance.

      • I got my batteries from eBay, aftermarket NB-13L, one Topmax and one from a different brand, but the topmax ended up being chipped to make the camera think it's genuine.

I to was looking at the Sony, as the 4K footage was enticing. But I scored the G7X for $500 second hand so that was my deciding factor being a true ozbargainer Taking the cheaper option haha.

        • I know. Under $590 for a brand new is a sweet spot for this wonderful, well designed camera. So the aftermarket battery you bought is called Topmax NB-13L, is it? I already bought the camera after I left that other comment and got the confirmation email from TGG's. All I am waiting for now is the ready for pick up email, and then I'll start hunting for at least one battery.

        • @AussieDaddy: yes, the topmax one said somewhere in the description that it had G7X mkII support. And you can bundle it with the micro USB charge cradle, so you can charge in on the go from a power bank, which is what I did whilst travelling

        • @camshandez: I bought it with another purchase I was making this afternoon when the eBay sale became active. Doesn't the camera come with a battery charger, and can't I charge it with that?

        • +1

@AussieDaddy: yes, a 240v wall charger, the USB one is good for on the go with a powerbank :)
The Normal charger works fine with them as well

        • @camshandez: Cheers. I will look into it when I am buying some other stuff (hoping that the PUNCH code hasn't expired yet haha).

        • @camshandez:

I had a look on ebay and the one description I found said it wasn't compatible with G7X mkII

          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NB-13L-Battery-USB-Charger-for-C…

I can't access the other seller's description. Did you buy your battery from either of these sellers or would you be able to link hwere you got it from.

          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NB-13L-Battery-USB-Charger-for-C…

        • @cubey:
aah that's right, I bought one from each brand as the TOPMAX was a dice roll as to if it was chipped or not, and mine was.
          TOPMAX combo
          MONDPALAST battery

        • @camshandez: So there's a likelihood that the Top-max battery that I bought wouldn't work with the G7X M2? That's like $23 down the drain. Lol! It hasn't been shipped yet, so I don't know if I have to cancel it or just take the risk and hope that it'll work.

        • @AussieDaddy: well mine did work, but not sure if they have any that do not. If it's not info chipped it'll work, just won't display how much juice is left in the battery.
          My topmax was perfect

        • +1

@camshandez: Fingers crossed. Hopefully mine will work. Cheers

  • Cool, I just picked this up from the previous 20% TGG eBay spesh. That took it down to $638.40 so not quite as good as this, but I did get back $7.98 through the eBay cashrewards too which was nice.

Still learning about this camera but it's nice to have something proper whilst travelling rather than my phone and can also save me lugging around the old 7D too for some trips.

Plus $100 store credit for click and collect today right?

  • having issue loading the good guys website…. really slow

  • This camera has great aperture. Does it produce good bokeh?

@camshandez do you find it is wider compare to, for example, Canon 18-55 DX lens (27-82 35mm Equivalent) ?

  • Thanks , picked up one yesterday happy with its

  • +1

Wow! Wait a minute! TGGs has further reduced the price of the camera down to $637 BEFORE the 15% discount and $50 cashback, which makes it $491.45. I have just picked up mine yesterday afternoon and it's still unopened. What is TGG's policy for something like this? Are they gonna give us back the difference in price, or should I buy another one and return the old one, cuz the difference is $96? TGGs says they have 30 Day Price Guarantee, where they pay you back the price difference for example if a competitor is selling a product cheaper than them, so I am wondering if that 30 Day Price Guarantee applies to themselves or not.

Why is the price of this camera going down so fast? Is the Mark III about to be released or something?

    • That is crazy. I haven't even picked mine up yet. I wonder if I can at least get store credit for the difference. I need a memory card.

I'll call at 9 today. Let me know how it works out for you.

It might even be worth buying this one and selling the other one if they don't take back the camera.

    • UPDATE:

Price guarantee does not work. The don't price guarantee themselves.

I was able to call the store and cancel it since I had not picked it up yet. I just ordered a new camera and took the delivery fee hit since no store close to me had it.

I asked her real quick what would be the case if a friend of mine had already picked his up. As long as it is unopened and unused you can return it to the store withing in 14 days according to the girl. If you confirm that you might be able to go back.

      • I just called them with the exact same issue.
Ordered on Boxing Day and saw the new price this morning.
The guy told me he could do the 30 day price guarantee if I could find the competitive price for him…
Anyway they hadnt shipped it yet so cancelled and re-ordered for pickup.
End of the day, this is a great deal.

      • thanks for the info, stores around me hadn't opened yet so already emailed them. i have already opened my box and played around with it, so looks like i miss out on the offer :'(( silly though cos i remember JB hifi used to honour price changes even if it had been opened - that happened to me when i bought a LG tablet a few years back, the price dropped by $100

        • +1

Well don't take my quote 100%. I say you should give it a try by calling the store you bought it from. If they do that take the refund Maybe you can negotiate some store credit or something?

        • @andreussi: will do and will let you know the results as might be helpful for others in the same boat. Thanks for keeping the hope alive :), fingers crossed

        • @andreussi: guy on the phone gave me the run around making excuses that it was the guys running the website who screwed up the pricing, which is a dead set lie.

Waiting for my email enquiry to be replied to now. Bet they will just ignore it though

Update: Went to the store this afternoon and got a full refund. If you haven't opened the box then they will easily give you a refund and you can re-order it, (depending on how cool your store staff is), or buy the Sony A6000, which is what I am considering. Good luck, everyone.
