    Aren't these illegal?

    • +11

      yes

      • Not if the vehicle is stationary with the key out of ignition

        • +4

It might still be depending on where you are parked.

        • So you're saying this thing is illegal for 99.99% of the time while I'm in my car?

        • @jv:
          waiting for a mate

      • I

      • -1

Are you talking about yourself :)

      • -1

        yes

        They're not illegal.

    • Yes legal, as long as you're not touching your phone nor looking at the screen.

  • +1

excellent to put on strollers. thanks

    • +1

      That would void the warranty

    • +3

Excellent to put on roller coasters. Thanks

      • +1

Excellent to put on large toasters. Thanks

        • Instructions unclear, put it on my roller toaster… :/

  • +2

I would be scared that I would turn a corner too quickly and my phone would go flying out the window.

    • +1

Ahh, that iphone x that flew out the wundow must have been yours.

    • +2
    • Nah it won't go flying, the charger cord would stop that.

      • +3

haha, I think the last thing you would want with one of these is a charger cord attached, chuck a u-turn and end up with your hand tied to the steering wheel.

  • No

Wow this is the most idiotic product i’ve seen in a while.

    • -2

Wow this is the most idiotic product i’ve seen in a while.

Because you can't find an application for it doesn't mean it's not idiotic.

What about truck drivers who are waiting for a load and are parked?
What about limo drivers who are waiting for a pickup and are parked?
What about enquiry agents/investigators performing surveillance?

There are a thousand uses for this product that don't break laws yet you determine it to be idiotic.

      • +2

I am a truck driver and from this comment, I can see that you are not a truck driver… or know any truck drivers… or have ever had anything to do with loading trucks…

  • It may (or may not) interfere with the airbag.

  • +2

What a time to be alive.

  • +2

In my car it blocks vision of the speedo display and other readouts. Not recommended.

  • +1

Only benefit of this phone holder I see is if I wanna watch videos while waiting in the car, Parked and engine off, while waiting for someone/something. Otherwise what a stupid product.

  • -1

You keep this useless product and just give me the daily spam zapals emails. So for those reasons I'm out.

  • +2

Product cost AU $0.74, but you will end up paying hundred or thousand dollars in fine when the police catch you.

  • Perfect, I can play pokemon go as I drive now!

  • +1

could be good on a bike handle too.

  • +5

    Mods going to delete this?

  • -1

Is this OzBargain or Zapals junk mail reposts? Sure, sometimes Zapals has some good stuff, but it’s getting to a point where it’s just 40c garbage items being posted from people looking to whore post points…

    Sorry Zapals, but I’m out.

Note to mods: reason for neg is that I have high doubts about the legality of this item. It sits in a place that blocks view of the cars instruments. Sure, it can be used on a pram or a bike or even if the car is stationary, but I very much doubt that this is its intended use. As someone who is a professional driver and from what I see on a daily basis, I think we should be doing all we can to get people off their phones while in the car, not enabling them.

  • thanks OP, bought one

  • Illegal product when using for intended purpose.

This product can contribute to injury and death if phone is used while mounted on steering wheel.

Insurance company won't cover you if you have an accident either

    • I do believe this is illegal at least in Victoria…. should we allow this kind of deal available here?

    • -1

Illegal product when using for intended purpose.

      No it's not.

This product can contribute to injury and death if phone is used while mounted on steering wheel.

Absolute rubbish, you are one of those drivers I can tell.

Insurance company won't cover you if you have an accident either

Tell OzBargain what part of the insurance PDS means they won't pay out if you have an accident with one of these fitted?

    • is it illegal to use on bicycle handlebars for navigation? I honestly dont know - or if this item even fits?

  • This is far more illegal and likely to result in someones death than any of the previously posted firearms which cause such a stir, can't believe this is even aloud to be posted. Just more Zapals spam

  • -2

Ok mods enough is enough. Time to step in and remove this post. Not sure why we have to tell you how to moderate

  • Perfect excuse to tell the cops you couldnt see how fast you were going

  • I would neg it if I knew the rules better. Using this would make it be so unsafe. Zapals or some affiliates seem to be dumping crap around here.

  • +3

    Didn't realise this was OzCantVoteForThatAsNotSureAboutItsLegalityInMyStateBargain.

    That's op.
Got for my racing wheel to use with iracing.

  • this cant be used for navigation? google maps easier to see?…just wondering…looks like it convenient …

So this "deal" is still here because technically this device itself isn't illegal. Nor is mounting it to your steering wheel illegal (because it's "commercially made" which is an odd benchmark). In fact, you can drive around with you phone in the damned thing if you want. The device is NOT illegal.

HOWEVER, installing it will almost certainly make your car unroadworthy as it's a modification that interferes with the safe operation of the vehicle.

(And even then, if a cop sees you with this on your steering wheel, you're getting pulled over for using a mobile phone. Then you'll be inspected for road worthy. Breathalysed. Criminal record checked, etc.. Using this device is dumb.)

    • HOWEVER, installing it will almost certainly make your car unroadworthy as it's a modification that interferes with the safe operation of the vehicle.

No it won't. You're also talking about this item actively interfering with the operation of the vehicle which is impossible for an inanimate object.

(And even then, if a cop sees you with this on your steering wheel, you're getting pulled over for using a mobile phone. Then you'll be inspected for road worthy. Breathalysed. Criminal record checked, etc.. Using this device is dumb.)

Throw some more claims in there whilst you're at it. It's not illegal just like a phone mount is not illegal or a GPS suction cup mount or one of the hundreds of other similar product.

      • :)

      • +1

You're also talking about this item actively interfering with the operation of the vehicle which is impossible for an inanimate object.

I simply cannot wait to use this inanimate sun shade while I'm driving as it is impossible for it to actively interfere with the operation of a vehicle

I like maverick's point of view, that because it isn’t "illegal" therefore it "cannot be used illegally…"

Knife = legal… Stab someone, illegal.
Gun = legal… Shoot someone, illegal.
Car = legal… Run over 15 people in Melbourne, illegal.
Cement = legal… Make shoes out of it to weigh people down in water, illegal.
Water = legal… Throwing someone into it wearing cement shoes, illegal.

It's all in the application. The phone holder, sure, it's "legal". It has other uses it can be applied to. But in the application of using it to hold a phone in front of your speedo (and it's advertised as such), then its legality certainly becomes more gray… If it was sold as a pram phone holder, this conversation wouldn't exist. The fact that it is actively sold as a phone holder for your steering wheel and that it's "ok" to use it like this simply because the holder isn’t "illegal", is absurd at best.
