End of Year Car Sales Advice

Long time lurker, first time twerker, so go easy. Looking at getting a small, economical auto hatch-back for my wife (e.g. Honda Jazz, Mazda 2, Hyundai Getz, etc) and was going to go down the used car path but saw a few end of year sales ads and thought I'd get some advice on the following issues based on your experience/s:

1) Is the convenience and ease of a new car worth the depreciation and extra outlay? (My first couple of forays into suburban used car expeditions have been a real pain and I think I am weary of some of the shifty dropkicks you have to deal with).
2) Anybody got any feedback on any particular makes and models in that small hatch market that they consider best value?
3) Anybody got any advice on trying to squeeze any more out of a new car deal in these kind of sales? For example, Honda Jazzes are advertised at 17,990 but could I wrangle another grand or more out of that, and if so, what's the game plan?
4) Any other things worth advising.

Thanks in advance.

    Go and test drive some

Why would you spend upwards of twenty THOUSAND dollars, without seeing if they….

    a) are comfortable
    b) look nice/feel nice
    c) are fun (if that's your thing)
    d) DO WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO DO………………only you know what you want, and you have told us nothing about what you want it to do/do with it………

wow - wasn't condescending information IMO

just wanted to understand your drivers/priorities

no point me suggesting a Kia Rio, if you think it's ugly, and you care about how your car looks

no point me suggesting a car with 7yr warranty, if you plan on keeping it for 3 years

no point me suggesting a VW, if you hate VW

but since you know what you want, why should i assist?

Wow, oscargamer offers great advice, almost verbatim what I would have said and you dismissed it as useless and condescending?

Wow, some people are hard to please…

I’m all out of negs for today, but I’ll be back tomorrow to drop one on this comment…

Can your wife drive a manual? I ve always seen manual versions of cars up to 2k cheaper than autos. plus all the recent 4 cyl cars in those makes seem to be a tad gutless in auto form, like I don't thrash a manual, but anyone that has some skills can get better performance and fuel economy with a manual purely by using the gear you feel appropriate for the hill, mountain or city traffic. The plus is you can always clutch start it should the need arise

Yes, she drives a manual but prefers autos and I agree with going down the manual path if I could convince her. I prefer the feel of changing gears manually anyway. Thanks.

  • 3) Assuming aussie car salesmen have the same monthly quotas that the americans do, than the best time to get a deal is the last day of the month when they need to hit a quota number to receive their bonus. From a story on one dealership, they'll sell at or even below cost to hit their quota

Second to that, the best(worst) day of the year is halloween, since no-one will be car shopping on that particular night

    • I think that's a myth, it is the cars delivered that counts. Selling a car on paper that later fall through finance doesn't help to move a car.

So if you are buying floor stock or something that is readily available and can be prep'd/rego'd for delivery quickly, then there's more room to negotiate.

Going there on the last day leaving no chance to get the car out the door that month doesn't help that much.

  • Cheers. Not sure how the quota system works here. Might put a late bid in before NY then!
