Business Shirts - Where do you buy them from?

This discussion is for those people that work full time who have to wear a shirt (M-F).

Curious to know where you buy your shirts from?

I mean, yes I see TM Lewin deals here every week and own a few myself, but lbh, they aren't the best, not saying they are bad either.
They are definitely good for what they are worth(always paid around $35-$50)

I have few MJ Bale shirts which are alright but nothing beats the HerringBone ones that I have.
Sadly they have closed down and I am yet to explore/buy something similar to that level.
If you are not aware, they used to be around mid $200 mark but with a discount came to under $100 which for me was a steal.

Where else do you buy your work shirts from, GOOD work shirts?
I have come to a point in my career where I rather have few good shirts then have 15 shitty/average shirts that tend to die after few months of washing.

Let me know gentz!

Cheers and Happy New Year, stay safe.

      • Boss suits are decent but not the best.

        • far from it, and not to mention overpriced for what they are.

        • BOSS suits are pretty atrocious (except for the HB Selection line, but then they are terribly priced), I learnt the hard way early on and have 3 suits that I never where.

  • Do you guys know what business shirt they use in Japan?

I was there back on October and looks like they all use the same type of shirt, usually white colour, but the most impressive they all look very well ironed.

I don't think they do iron it every day, must be a special shirt that doesn't get wrinkles.

    Cheers

Have you tried uniqlo shirts? Might be ignorant of me (never been to Japan) but I think they'd sell business shirts that are the style and construction of shirts in Japan.

That makes sense. I have heaps of Uniqlo clothes, but have no business shirts. I will give it a try. Cheers

        • I have a bunch of Uniqlo business shirts. They have regular fit, slim fit, and then stretch slim fit. The stretch slim fit fits me the best so you might want to try the different ones out to see what works for you.

Be warned that some of their shirts can be quite thin and in white, they will be a bit see through (nipples!).

Otherwise they are ok shirts, however for the price you pay in Australia ($40-50) you might as well buy Charles Tyrwhitt (like many have suggested above). I can confirm (I own way too many business shirts - tmlewin, ctshirts, uniqlo…you name it, I've probably got it) that CT Shirts quality is very good. Much much better than Uniqlo.

The thing with CT Shirts, is to go through a bit of trial and error to work out what your size/measurements are. Like others have posted, I then get them altered (I have an excellent and cheap tailor in North Sydney) so that they fit me great. Be careful that if you get the thicker cotton shirts, that they will be quite hot in our Aussie summer. But that will be true of any thick shirt from any brand.

For me, my evolution of shirt buying has now led me to buying bespoke tailored shirts from a tailor in Bangkok Thailand. I spend similar money to an altered CT Shirt, but I can customise it to suit me perfectly.

        • @Kinjiru: That’s great. Where about in North Sydney is this tailor mate?

        • @gentlecrack: Sorry for the late reply.

He is a very nice guy and patient. Like any tailor, it will take him a little time to work with you and learn what you like and don't like. So if you get something altered and it isn't spot on, let him know and he will fix it. I've had many suits and shirts altered by him, although I haven't gone to him for a few years (I no longer work in North Sydney).

        • @Kinjiru: Thank you Kinjiru.

In Japan they all have shirts washed and pressed.

When you check into a hotel you have to ask for an Iron because the assumption is the shirts are already ironed. No Hotel room i've ever seen in Japan has an Iron in it by default.

Source: Well over 50 trips to Japan over the last ten years.

Loads of salarymen wear poly because they don't like to iron. And if you get vomit on it after a night of hard drinking with the boss, you check into a love hotel and get an emergency shirt and tie set from 7 eleven.

Many moon ago (before I discovered OzBargain) I used to get them tailor made by a master shirtmaker named Charles in Parramatta, he specialises in shirts and is a gentleman. The shirts aren't cheap but are worth it and will you like a glove.

  • I’ve been using Original Stitch. Made to measure over the internet.

  • Cheapie Blaq/Myer brand shirts with the red/pink discounts (usually like $15-25). Funnily enough they are the ones for now that are the best fitting for me. Normal shirts are all too big on me, and other ones "slim fit" then aren't large enough around the neck, etc.

That said, I haven't tried many fancier shirt brands as I don't give a shit if my shirt is not some guy's name or sounds like a law firm :P. There are still some cheapies I'd avoid though like Harris Scarfe; very papery lol.

My friends' all say tailored O/S is the best and cheap but just don't have the opportunity when I travel.

Tarocash at Brisbane's DFO they usually have a great range and cheap prices.

    • Buy Tarocash if you want to rock the 'future one punch defendant' look.

      • Oh shit now I need to find new clothes!

  • I have been wearing TM Lewin non iron shirts for years. Haven’t had any issues with them. Definitely worth trying - what don’t you like about them?

    • Same boat here, I have few non iron ones and they are great and been using for the last 2-3 years.
I bought few white ones recently (not the non-iron ones) and they wrikle very fast and looks like I have not ironed them after few hours of wear.
The non-iron ones for summer is too hot so need an alternative which is easy to iron plus feels cool and light when wearing them.

  • TM Lewin - a great representation of how business shirts are usually both ugly and boring at the same time. I guess it's kinda the point of them to have that specific look and of course may be part of a dress code. I prefer some individuality though and simply wear long sleeve button ups from a few luxury fashion labels, very expensive but you only need a minimum of 3 and simply cycle through them, makes an impression.

    • What exact features do you like on your shirts? What TM Lewin or CT does is timeless design. Simple, elegant and I guarantee you it will look good if you nail the fit.

When I see guys wearing shirts with contrast cuffs/pockets/collars, inside plackets, colored buttonholes/button threads and brand labels I think the person is just trying too hard or just doesn't know what he is doing. Not to mention, all these features are making your clothing much more memorable which makes it more difficult to cycle through them.

      Keep it simple.

      • -2

Lol, those features are not what I'm talking about, you're still talking about business shirts, I'm talking about something entirely different, and believe me if there's one thing I hate it's people who think it actually means something to show off brand labels. Certainly what I like is simplicity, and especially elegance, you won't find the elegance part with TM Lewin etc though. Business shirts are indeed timeless, in the same way that a hessian potato sack is, it's part practicality and part culture from a time long gone, and I don't consider looking conformative the same as looking good no matter the fit. My approach is basically to not buy business shirts at all or from companies that make business shirts, because it's all the same dull ugly stuff, I buy long sleeve button ups that were never designed as business shirts in the first place.

  • CT shirts for me. I always buy using the 3 for $99 code and for the price I have not found anything better.

They have a good range of sizes too, so you are bound to find something that fits well - as others above mentioned, you can have them adjusted if necessary and it still works out to be good value per shirt given you end up with a perfect fit.

    • Send us a code next time? Keen to try it out as so many people here has recommended!

try this one bought 3 yesterday.

  • Costco great for Nautica business shirts. Ben Sherman & Calvin Kline. Cheap and quality is fine ie ~$30

  • I once knew a guy who only had 5 business shirts that he'd bought from target.
    Yes, the cheap ones.
There would be the Monday shirt, the Tuesday shirt - you get the drift.
Then on the weekend he would wash them, hang them on the line to dry, and finally iron them ready for the next week.

    He was an Engineer.

    • I do the same…

      • +1

        Yeah ok…

I'm sure your fine, but this other guy was a tool.

  • peter jackson used to make a really nice thick business shirt which i really liked, however it seems they have cheaped out recently and gone to a thinner spec. i recently bought some nice work shirts from roger david on sale ranging from $20 - $50 which are quite nice. am now looking to buy a plain white ralph lauren shirt for casual fridays , just checking if the dfo outlets sell them for any cheaper than the regular store fronts. i have a slightly strange body shape which means i have to try on everything before i buy, randomly buying online based on measurements doesnt work for me.

  • Give Charles Tyrwhitt a go. If you can get the 3 for $99 with free shipping it's hard to beat.

  • I work in Myer. We often have pretty good bargains on business shirts and team members discount on top of that, it's icing on a cake. I normally buy Van Heusen shirts $30+

    • P.S. I only buy them when they are on sale.

  • Calvin Klein for me. I like the slim fits and now they have ultra slim.
They are easy to iron, look good and last for ages.

  • i now drop 128 usd per shirt from this site https://woolandprince.com/collections/button-down-shirts

its a merino and nylon blend. Never stink. never crease… you wash them after about 4 or 5 wears and then just hang on a hanger out of the machine… and repeat.

also have one of these on today https://shop.bluffworks.com/collections/shirts and seems nice. but only just got it so cant really review it yet.

My wool and prince shirts still look brand new after a year of use. And are good for another year i reckon.

    Never iron again.

  • Tarocash, YD, Connor.

  • I have VH, Blaq and Bell Barnett.

I like the iron-less shirts, still need an iron to look best.

Pure cotton are a pain to iron and will wrinkle at the slightest touch. But are thicker and better quality.

4 for 100$ VH is a great deal for normal business shirts. Bell Barnett are also great when on special. Blaq is just good, cheaper myer brand shirt. Does the job.

I don't work in a field that requires $100+ shirts. Not yet anyway.

I am a 41 neck, euro fit (not slim fit) with 89 or 90 sleeves.
What is a CT or TM L in that size?
(I really don't want to buy 3 shirts to send 2 back. What a waste of time, money and air fuel haha)

  • just got back from a random shopping trip with a nice 100% cotton shirt from gazman for $50

  • I mean, if u want good fitting long lasting shirts i would get them tailor made! If not i wouldn;t bother too much, Zara, H&M do their job to me.

  • +1

Rhodes & Beckett for me - but only ever when they're on sale (I'll make exceptions for something I really like/want). I was shattered when I heard they were going bust, but glad they're back open with a few select stores.

The quality is incredible. I still wear the first R&B shirt I purchased nearly 3 years ago (yes I still fit in it!). I wash it after each time I wear it and I can only now start to see some areas around the cuffs starting to fade. The rest of the shirt looks brand new, no loose buttons etc. I have around 10 of their shirts and 3 of their suits and just cycle throughout the week.

Higher price, but you definitely get your money's worth. Try aiming for the end of season sales, just keep in mind their White shirts are very rarely on sale.

    • Looks decent, maybe I will try to visit the store when I am in NY in May ;)

      • +1

Let us know how you go! :)

    • $400 shirts!?!

  • CT shirts - If you buy them in a set - not all are of good quality.
I have used VH and they are perfect for the price. I like Brooksfield too. Just try Wrinkle free ones.

Charles Tyrwhitt….3 for $99 including shipping from London. Comes faster than most stuff that ships from Australia.
