Cheapest Way to Pickup/Deliver Multiple Large Goods from eBay/Gumtree

I want to buy furnishings for a place I'm moving into.
Been currently looking at 2nd hand goods such as bed frame, mattress, fridge, sofa, tv, washing machine.
The issue is I don't have a vehicle to pickup/deliver these goods if I went the 2nd hand route.

I think my options are
Airtasker for each individual pickup
Hire a Van (would borrow a trolley or dolly) or use GoGet with the Ikea/Mastercard promotion.

Anyone been in this dilemma or have advice?

Buy a 2 by 4 from bunnings and use the free trailer they lend you

    • no towbar on my car. would have been happy just to be able to hire a trailer.

Buy something cheap but long at Bunnings and take advantage of their free trailer hire. Then, pick up your furniture with the Bunnings trailer.

The only issue I can see with second hand goods off Gumtree is that you have to wait for a bargain or something specifically that you are after to pick up.

I mean, it is of very little chance that you will find several items that you are after at a good price at a close proximity of each seller on the day. You have more luck winning Tattslotto LOL!

Furthermore, as unfortunately what Gumtree is "sometimes" renowned for is that the seller might not hold for you or sell behind your back to a higher bidder.
There is point hiring a Van is it is the case. It is a risk that you are going to spend the money on transport for nothing.
It is best to get a Van on an Ad-Hoc basis however eBay may be way better to plan.
There are some Van hiring/pick up services for the day on Gumtree that you can equire.

    • I guess thats one of the conveniences of buying new (amongst all the other things) that most places offer delivery. Like you said, getting items within range and organising times to match a day would be one in thousand. So it would definitely be picking up on different days.

From what I saw most of the gumtree ads were focused on removalist (moving multiple items from one location to another on the same time). I'll do more gumtree searching.

Wish there was an Uber move.

The above is a very good point (people on Gumtree not being reliable and selling it to someone else so you've hired the van for nothing). Could it be an option to get the cheap packages from Fantastic Furniture and have them deliver to you? Won't be great quality but it will be less hassle at least, and everything will match which is something.

    • I've never actually had a seller bail on gumtree. honestly didn't know that was a thing. Had a few just drop off in the middle of communication. That would be very upsetting. :(

Don't get me wrong. There are way more better and honest sellers on Gumtree than dishonest/shifty sellers.

However I have experienced/dealt with many rubbish sellers such as after negotiations and a word of mouth sale. That is; whilst I was on my way to pick up, they text me some rubbish excuse to evade for me to pick up ..e.g. "it has been already sold & my son didn't tell me" … etc … Complete rubbish!

They take you for an idiot.

This has happened a few times to me. It is a kick in the teeth.

Imagine if you went through all the trouble of hiring a truck/van. Would they pay for the bill if they opt out considering you have made a deal?
        Good luck with that!

I noticed that you are after a mattress.

Personally I wouldn't buy a used mattress. Plenty of things occur on the Mattress over time. Stains left (or too difficult to remove) that cannot be discussed on this forum :-)

        Have you tried this:

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Queen-Double-King-Single-Mattres…

I purchased a King Sized mattress from this mob and all I can say that it is fantastic!! Check the reviews!

Before the purchase, I was going to HN, Regal Sleep solutions etc .. and they were trying to flog off a $3K mattress.
Mate, for the tenth of the price, this mattress gives them a good run for the money.

        Cheers

Getting msg'd on the way to the pickup would make me ropeable. without hiring/organising transport.

Thanks for the info Vinni. Yeah, i've think i've seen the Atelier brand from searching on ozb previously. I def check it out.

I generally hire the Ute from bunnings. It's auto, $25 for 4 hours and a $200 refundable deposit.

Get multiple things done at once to take advantage of having the Ute for 4 hours.
