Save up a bit and get the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM instead…

    The quality difference is amazing.

The quality difference is not going to be noticeable. Paying 3x the price for a bigger heavier lens with a design thats 25 years old is definitely not a bargain.

If you are doing video at 50mm then the STM will be preferred.

If you are doing still portraits then 1.4 and 1.2 will be better. 1.4 is reasonably priced. But 1.8 won’t be too bad either if you want to keep options open for video.

We had a 1.4 but our second shooter accidentally killed it. Now we have a 1.2 but I’m actually considering getting this 1.8 just for the STM / video.

Canon's 50mm 1.4 isn't worth considering these days, IMO. This 1.8 STM version is a fantastic little performer for portraits - I use mine all the time for this - and it's usefulness for video is an added bonus. The 1.2 isn't bad and gives a unique look with at wider apertures, but is obviously very expensive in comparison.

      • Ken says "The only Canon 50mm to avoid is the 50mm f/1.4 USM. It's Canon's softest 50mm lens. The rest are all about as super-sharp."

    • Nothing is in bold. Disappointed.

    It's a good price

For comparison, local stock/warranty: Ted's are having a 10% sale and have this for $20 more

    • Teds sale is over. Back to $159.

  • Great deal, though the discount does not work when I apply the WELCOME code

    • for some reason the code worked when my Honey extension added it… Thanks again for the deal

    • The case sensitive WELCOME code works. I've just tried it again on a few devices.

      • I had it all in caps as I copy and pasted it, weird how it never worked, unless it can only be typed in

Great price, and a lens that should be in every Canon shooter's kit - I have this STM version and love it. Canon's 50mm 1.4 isn't worth considering these days.

  • Not so great on crop sensor. And if you have a full frame body you can afford a better lens.

    • it's very useful on full frame, and optically great, so it's great on full frame for what it does. even greater on 1.3x crop if you have one

      • +1. Mine is attached to the 70D most of the time.

    • Can you recommend an alternative fast short telephoto portrait lens at this price point?

  • $50 shipping for me :( VIC rural)
