  • every good price!

  • The must-buy lens for Sony mirrorless users! This price is crazy low with $200 EFTPOS gift card, it’s still one of the SHARPEST E-mount lenses with remarkable Zeiss colour.

    Yeah good lens..

  • Bought this with the Black Friday sales and wow this is an amazing lens! Also bought the 16-35mm for a wide angle - really cheap with discount and Sony cashback!

  • +2

    Great lens for my A7.

  • +1

This is an amazing lens at an amazing price. If you have the A7 series or A9, do not hesitate and get this lens, you will not regret it.

    • +1

Agree. As good as Sigma Art 50mm f1.4 but without focusing issue.

    • Even great using on crop sensor Sony cameras as a short telephoto portrait lens, such as a5000 series, a6000 series and the old NEX, this lens is just so sharrrrp.

  • Bought this one for 1008 at sony Chatswood. Great find.

  • Sorry. call me an idiot for a second. What is the difference between this and the Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM?

    • +2

      5mm

    • This one is for Sony's

    • HD and P

    • +3

Canon is for Canon Cameras and can't be used on any other brand. This is for Sony E/FE mount and can only be used on the mentioned Sony mounts.

    • If you're wondering about the difference in price, the Sony is a high end, ultra sharp portrait lens. The canon would also be reasonably sharp but not on the level enough for pros. Camera gear gets extraordinarily and exponentially expensive as quality goes up. For the average user, a cheap canon dslr with a Canon 50mm f1.8 would be completely fine!

German Zeiss Glass with unique coating and fully metal barrel for Sony mirrorless cameras

      VS

Cheap plastic Canon budget lens for old tech DSLRs.

      • The FE 55/1.8 is neither German glass, nor Zeiss glass. It was designed and manufactured by Sony, and the Zeiss name is licensed for marketing purposes.

    • Yes, well how about we then take a step up to the Canon 50mm f/1.4, and the Canon 50mm f/1.2 (Which when on sale can be about $900). Both of these lenses have got the rugged construction like the Sony.

        (pro photog here).

The Canon 50 1.4 is ok, but not great until f2.8'ish. Lacks anything special. It's a good lens, just not anything amazing,.

The Canon 50 1.2 is amazing, but an absolute lottery to get focus at wider than f/2.

The Sony 55 1.8 is near perfect, only bested by the Sony 50 1.4 (a $2000 lens).

As a general comment, the Sony's are pretty much on point from wide open, the Canons typically need to be stopped down a bit.

This be over kill for the a6000?
    Can’t afford the 7

    • +2

This lens is the superman’s uniform that can be dressed by an ordinary naked guy and fly, without learning. It’s a Zeiss Prime lens, mate.

      • +1

You had me all the way until “this”

Is it a buy or nay?

I’ve been meaning to get a new camera from my nex3. The a6000 looks good and I could get thisnlense butnis just forkingnout for the a7 with standard lenses better ?

        • +2

I initially used this Zeiss 55mm lens with my previous NEX-6 for a wedding shoot, this lens made the magic, super sharp with special Zeiss colour! You need to notice the focal length will be about 85mm on Sony APSC cameras due to the 1.5X crop factor.

If you need another prime for A6000, the Sigma 30mm f1.4 lens is great, ie. 45mm full frame focal length.

If you need a great zoom lens for a6000 series cameras, 18-105 f4 is both great for photo and video.

You can use the above lenses to create magic with a6000.

I currently own a6000, a6300 and a7r ii (owned two a7ii, and sold them for upgrades). A6000 is still by far the MOST FAVOURITE camera for me to shoot stills, it’s a little mighty beast for both day and night shooting.

This Zeiss 55mm at this price point is the lens you must buy, no matter you use Sony APSC or Full-Frame cameras.

        • @JFSYD:

Ok ok. Which one is best for taking pictures of my gf standing in front of things around town and on holidays whiffle keeping her in focous and the backgrounds ? Can’t figure out why the back round always goes blurry and we have to use the iphones.

        • @T1OOO: You might keep using iPhone or learn some basic photography lessons from YouTube. Never buy many gears if you are not sure how to use them.

        • @JFSYD:

I tried man. None could do it. I had to have it set at a big f stop then keep it steady for 5-10 seconds. It was still blurry as crap so I gave up. Basically iv realised it can’t be done let alone easily.

        • If you definitely want to stay in the Sony system, I would recommend this lens. It's basically always on my camera.
As they say, invest in glass and not in bodies. The lens you can keep when you upgrade the body.

        • By increase the apperture I mean increase the number in the camera which basically means make the apperture slower/smaller :D

        • @tariqsaleem:

yept hats what i do, but in that case it took longer to take the shot, so needed to hold it steady, and it only produced a minor improvement, to the point where the iphone or normal point and shoot was on par…

why cant they just make a setting, "normal camera" yep thats the one you want, not either foreground or back ground.

        • @T1OOO:

If photography was that easy everyone would be doing it :)

The smaller the aperture the more the shutter basically. You can play with iso to balance it out but that will have it's limitations until u have too much noise.

Then it also matter how big your sensor is etc.

By the way, try setting your camera to landscape mode (if there is any) might help make it easy to get what u r after

        • @tariqsaleem:

then you lose the focous of the person … you dont want that with a narcissistic gf!

        • @T1OOO:

          Now I'm confused :)

Send a sample pic that you think works for you that you have taken from your iPhone and then I'll try and figure out what settings you can use :)

  • I am waiting for the sigma to release a 35 1.4 FE lens instead of buying a Zeiss 55 1.8.

    • Or you can buy Samyang FE auto 35mm f1.4, very great lens.

      • That's true.

        • or money aside, The Sony/zeiss 35 1.4 is great and has bucketloads of character.

    • 55x1.5crop= 82.5. This is close to the portrait lens for full frame at 85mm.

      • Just personal preference. I like the view of 35 better than 55 or 85. Besides, I can use the 35 1.4 for both street photography and portrait.

  • My favourite lens! Love the sharpness and colours! Using it for more than 2 years and can't me more happy! Great price!

  • +1

Once you put this lens on, it will never get off the camera. Trust me! ;)

  • Georges was cheaper the other day $924.8, which I jumped on! Seems insane to pay so much for a "nifty fifty" but the reviews are amazing, couldn’t resist.

    • +3

Ugh. Thanks for letting us know after the sale!
