  • You can get this normally by using the code "FAMILYFREE"

    • +1

Yup i think it actually comes up in the url link.

  • Is Qantas the only airline that (supposedly) charges to join the FF program?

    • +5

Just smart marketing. 99% of those who join get it for free, but collecting points feels more valuable.

  • Free only for a year?

    • For life.

    • lol even Qantas isn't bold enough to charge an annual free for something everyone else gives for free.

      • I see. Then why would anyone pay $89.50 ever?

        • They don't.

  • It doesn't give free access to Qantas lounge anyway. Right?

    • +1

Was interested in what QFF actually gives you. Entry level not much but found this site which has a good explanation of perks once you move up.

      https://www.pointhacks.com.au/qantas-status-guide/

    • Correct. You need at least gold status to get unlimited access to lounges, although Silver status gets you two single use passes per year.

      • Only in the first year you reach Silver I believe.

        • Thank you for the correction.

      • One single use pass.

The only good thing about silver is you earn more points per flight.

        • +1

I disagree, priority check-in is one of the best and most practical perks and that is part of silver.

        • @b2dz: Doesn't really help much when you're on a flight that is mostly business travellers with status. Flying to CBR from MEL for the Federal Budget this year, the priority line was longer than the standard line

        • @Cyphar:

This happens regularly on the Sydney to Melbourne route as well but that is more for priority boarding rather than priority check-in, as most people often have carry on only.

It's great for less popular routes and anything international.

      • You can pay for a Qantas Club membership. I have a discounted corporate membership which I pay $290 a year for. As I usually fly on discount/sale bucket tickets, I don't get enough SC's to reach Gold most years so I find great value in it given how much I travel and when I do hit Gold, it pauses until I drop back to Silver

        • Good option.

        • Can you gain access to Qantas lounges as a QC member when flying Jetstar?

        • @b2dz: Yep but in SYD & MEL, JQ Domestic takes off from terminals on opposite ends of the QF terminal so it's a 10-15 minute walk. Not bad if you have time, but forget it if you don't. International is the same terminal so no issues there.

        • @Cyphar:

Yes it sucks that there is no option for a lounge at Sydney T2. Wouldn't be so bad if you didn't have to go through security, which can be a little unpredictable.

Edit: thanks, so same lounge access privileges as a gold member by the looks of it.

Back in the mid-90's I bought a life membership to the Qantas Club for $3K. It was a lot of money at the time, but I've recouped it many times over. They don't offer this anymore. The world-wide lounge access is really beneficial, but I doen't know if I'd be willing to fork out the annual fee these days.

    cmon lol

This shit is always free. So many ways to get free membership

  • +1

No deal. Lots of ways to get it free. Easiest is to just use a foreign adress (make up one if you dont have a foreign one - my one was in Siberia!). Sign up is then free. Soon as you get a memberships number then change the adress back to your aus adress

  • I am wondering if anyone really paid for it, all other airlines even give free points for sign up, and Qantas might be only one charge membership fee, and to Australia and NZ resident only, it is kind of shame.

  • Question, just flew Qantas a week ago. Can the points be applied if I apply for a membership today?

    • there is an option to claim missing points, but not sure it can predate your account.

      • You can claim retrospectively the flight/s are within 30 days of your FF enrolment date.

        • I enrolled but it says "The most recent departure date you can claim for is Thursday 28 December 2017"? Directly contradicts their statement above on the page which is what you said?

        • @brokeunistudent:

Give them a call and see what they can do.

  • Spent USD$100 for MarcoPolo FF (Cathay Pacific), anyone did the same thing?

    • +2

Well, unlike Qantas FF, people do actually pay for Marco Polo.

I think Qantas would refund anyone who paid for Qantas FF membership if they asked, rather than anger a customer who actually paid to pay to sign up for a loyalty program.

The $89.50 figure is just to let partners offer free membership as a 'bonus' while getting people to sign up for other stuff like credit cards.

Just like when you think you're getting something worthwhile when you get 20 FF miles for your parking booking.

When what you really did is enable Qantas' massive data operation to track you in exchange for something worth less than 1c.

      • But if you travel is worth it in everyway.

As a gold FF it is fantastic (lost platinum 2 years ago and so content with the much lesser amount of travel these days) and always allows me to either use points for first/business class or upgrade my flights to first/business.

Have all the data you want coz I at least get awesome holiday flights for me and the family.

Most other data collecting business ibly offer 10% discount at best or even worse nothing!!!

        • Of course the FF program is worth it (Gold too), I just mean earning two digit points on parking is useless.

If you park 20,000 times, one person can fly SYD-PER :-p

ANZ have always openly advertised free Qantas FF membership too (you don't need to be an ANZ customer): https://www.anz.com.au/personal/credit-cards/frequent-flyer/

"11. This joining fee waiver is offered by ANZ. It is available to new applicants or existing ANZ Frequent Flyer credit card account holders who are not already Qantas Frequent Flyer members and who apply for membership online at the Qantas website. This offer is non-transferable and not available in conjunction with any other offer. Qantas Frequent Flyer membership and each application is subject to approval by Qantas."

  • I just booked a ticket through expedia for a qantas flight but wasn't signed up to the FF program at that point. Can I still add this membership somehow to earn points for that flight?

    • +1

When the plane reaches 88 mph, put the date in the infotainment screen that you booked the flight.

      • +1

That was funny, but I think it was a genuine question.

        • Definitely was.

        • @Diahreabombb: yes you can always go to manage your booking and add QFF number for all passengers on that itinerary.

          👍

    • +1

Yes. Plenty of ways. You should be able to sign up, log in, and add your booking using the booking id to your Qantas FF account on the website. Or the app.

Or just add the FF number when you check in.

      • Got it, thanks for the help!

    • Once you have your QFF account, put the number in to your Expedia booking. This will then connect to your Qantas account within about 10 mins and you can then see it connected when you log in to your account on Qantas.com

  • Registration via the qantaspoints.com domain doesn't seem to work anymore. Nothing happens after pressing the "Free of Charge" button. Have tried FAMILYFREE, KIDS, ANZ, etc. Same results.

Looks like the new registration link is at https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/joinff, yet I can't find anywhere to enter those free registration codes.

Is there an updated method to get free QFF membership??

    • I just filled out an app for my son and it worked fine, pressing the free-of-charge button. mMke sure you have filled out ALL the fields or it won't work.

  • Thanks OP. It worked for me!

  • https://www.qantaspoints.com/join-now?code=FREELOUNGEINVITE is also indicated as working on the "transfer complimentary lounge passes" page.
