Need Some Advice on Tyres and - How Often Can I Find "Buy 3 Get 1 Free" Deals?

I was in Costco some days ago and came across this deal and the guy told this deal only happen once in a year. True or False?

This is my tyre size

This is what their tyre price includes especially they have 3 "life of the tyre" services on that list makes it very good value.

So, here is the price for my car Bridgestone Ecopia EP100, $115 for 1, buy 3 get 1 free. Total $345 for 4.

I have never changed the tyres on my Nissan since I bought it about 5 and half years ago. (It's a 2005 Pulsar Sedan) But I did do some tyre rotation along these few years.

Here is what my tyre tread looks like at the moment.

Also, in this photo, the "0211" means the tyre is made at the second week of 2011? Am I correct?

Let me know if I should go ahead and change them, thank you!

  • Yes you are right. 0211 means 2nd week of 2011.

  • Have you checked out Kmart tyre & auto service? They price beat most stores. I got brand new (8 tyres - 4 tyres for each car) recently from them installed, balanced and aligned. They worked out to be the cheapest for me plus got flybuys points as well as 6 months road-side assist plus free tyre rotation for use later on.

I went with Bridgestone RE003 tyres for car 1 & Continental tyres for car 2. Car 1 came with Michelin Pilot sport 3 fitted from factory which wore out pretty quickly and the bridgestone's I'm finding a bit quieter also!

Not yet, but i checked Bob Jane, they also have this buy 3 get 1 free offer but about $10 more expensive, and i doubt they will include those extra services that Costco offer.

Don't know much about brands, the tyres are Hankook on my car since we bought the car, it seems fine to use…

    • How was the pricing at kmart at the time?

Kmart managed to price beat bob Jane who managed to price beat Costco.

So basically got the tyres for $120 each down from $220 each! With free allignment, fitting balancing.

        • ok thats quite good, will take a look at kmart soon. Thanks

        • @fsan: no worries! Good luck & happy new year.

In Sydney they'll price beat the grey importers like Tempe Tyres etc

  • You can give supercheap auto tyres (via Tyroola) for a special or two. They deliver the tires to a dealer and they fit, balance and rotate.

Note your original price of $345 likely doesnt have balance/rotate included.

    • No no, check this photo, you probably missed this one

It seems they even do it for "the life of the tyre"

      • Wow thats not bad…

Keep the tyres you have. Heaps of tread on existing tyres. No where near the wear indicators. If side walls are OK and rubber isn't drying or splitting then keep them. If you really want to get new tyres then sell them as trailer tyres on Gumtree for $20 each.

    • Yes, that's what my mechanic told me, but considering "buy 3 get 1 free" + "the tyres are 7 years old" these 2 factors, i am just not too sure what to do, plus this deal literally ends today 31-12-2017, which means i have to pay today to have this deal, i can have the tyres installed later when they have stock. (As they are out of stock when i asked for the quote)

Good idea on selling the old tyres!

You mustn't travel many km per year. In the next 24 months there will be similar deals. Save your money.

Ok, i will listen to you. :)

          @chengjianer:

Don't know about Costco, but these get one free deals almost never work out cheaper than shopping around.

As Tightbottom said, you have decent tread left and they're wearing nice and even.

Keep them until you need to change them.

  • As already noted, your tread has plenty of life left so it's not worth worrying about right now.
When you do start looking, I might suggest searching Gumtree for new wheels. I got a set of brand new Impreza wheels+tyres with <500 km travel for $300 as the person who bought it put on different size rims.

  • Think tread is almost 25% left in it but if you ever plan a long drive be careful as the 7 year old rubber will be your lifeline when running under extreme heat. We had a similar old tyre burst in the middle of nowhere (three ways, NT) in the heat of the extremely hot outback afternoons but lucky it was a Dunlop and only developed a leak (rather than a full burst) so we quickly noticed and managed to safely stop from 130km/h. For city driving your tyres should have another 18 months but for sustained highway driving at high cruising speeds I'd not trust them. Costco 4 for 3 deals are quite regular. Personally I'd prefer Costco, as their tyre would be most fresh when compared especially with grey importers like Tempe tyres etc. whose manufacturing dates could be a year old.

That's exactly what my dad is worried about, however, we haven't planned any road trip so far, so mainly city driving, 10-20km a day. I guess it should be fine for now..

It would be nasty if it was a tyre burst at that speed…

  • I suggest you logon to the bridgestone site and get the 4 for 3 deal for $385… serendipity plus tyres are just fine… whilst on the phone get them to throw in a wheel alignment for free, then book your car in… all this running around costs you time and money… keep the best tyre as your spare.. good luck champ !!

  • Agree, just noticed Costco manufacturing date for some 15 in tyres which I saw today was 22 week of 2017. Just for reference if you're interested in buying very fresh tyres.
