  • any advantage of this over google map?

    • Full offline maps I suppose.
Just used it couple of times but what I found is it doesn't do live search(like putting in restaurant name and Google Maps will pick up the address).
Perhaps it is because I am running it offline.

    • Proper Car Navigation from ground up (Feels like a Garmin/Tomtom with similar type of interface). I find it Routes a little better than Google Navigation and as said before, its offline.

How about this vs Here We Go?
Google Maps doesn't have speed cameras info and current speed information. But Here does.

        • My preferred offline maps would be Navigon (by Garmin). For free offline maps you can't beat Here We Go. Offers Speed and camera warnings. Only downside is, there is no offline bookmarks/favourite destinations only recent destination history. You need to create an account and login to access you favourite destinations. Also I think no speed or camera warning if running with no destination entered. Of customisable sounds/warning.

  • It's crap, you have to know the street and number of the destination you want to travel to. Can't write for example Westfield and to show you Westfield shopping centres around you.

    • +2

      That comes under POI search.

    • They sort of fixed that I think 2-3 updates ago, for example I can now just type in the hotel name I'm staying follow by suburb and it shows up nicely, before I agree it's annoying have to look for the precise address and it sometimes crashes as it search it's address database.

Have you heard of Google Maps?
An app that is reliable, convenient and FREE.

    • +2

Sygic has complete offline maps capability which isn't available with Google maps. It is very useful if you commence a journey where there is no cellular coverage.

      • +2

You can download an entire city to use offline with Google Maps. POIs work too…

        • +1

Yes, that feature is good only if you have planned out your route.

Complete Australia map offline is very useful if you find yourself with no cellular coverage and you need to use find a route, OR you need an alternate route which was not downloaded OR you find yourself outside of cellular coverage and you need to search for a new destination.

If you are travelling overseas or covering a vast distance over a remote region, having a complete offline solution is a good backup solution.

Both Here WeGo and Sygic offer offline map download, which should be used in conjunction with Google Maps

        • You can't really cache for Interstate travels with GMaps.

      • +3

Here We Go has offline maps for the whole world

  • +2

I use Here maps and haven't had any problems.

Has anyone tried multiple apps and have a preference?

    • +2

I use Waze over Google Maps because it has options like "avoid difficult right turns" and does a bit more rerouting based on traffic. It also has speed/red-light camera alerts, police alerts, and a built in speedo with an optional audible tone if you exceed the speed limit.

The ads are annoying but infrequent and only appear if you're stopped. IF you google around you can disable them.

      • +1

Waze uses way more battery than GMaps or Sygic. Uninstalled it after a few uses simply because of the power drainage and overheating of the device (in and amongst being on the dash).

    • +3

I use Sygic which is a paid version. The only thing i find Sygic has over Here wego maps is Advance Lane Guidance. Most useful so you know which lane to keep when having to make turns. Google maps are getting better now since they added Advance lane guidance, but it doesnt show speed limit which is available with Sygic and Here wego.

  • I remember Sygic used to be free to Samsung phone user not anymore?

    • back in days of Galaxy S2

    • +3

      No.it's Navigon.

    • +2

Not Sygic. Navigon. Before Garmin bought them out and stopped the deal with Samsung. Samsung then did a deal with Nokia to provide HERE through their store as preference in replacing Navigon.

  • +2

POS. Always out of date, missing new streets and speed limit changes, Sygic keep promising updates will fix this, but fail to deliver.

I own this and Tomtom Go, both got live traffic however Sygic never calculate the route based on the traffic for the entire trip. It looks to me it only cares about 2-3 km worth of traffic and tend to ignore the rest until it reaches a certain distance to the next calculation point, as a result the projected time never work out to accurate or should I say close to anything but accurate and I ended up facing more traffic than another route, I had this compared side by side also with a friend who shares the same route as me using Tomtom during Melbourne peak hours.

Lifetime license was definitely how I fell for it, but overall route calculation algorithm is as bad as it can be with other “premium features” requires additional money to unlock. I’d personally stick with google map or tomtom go until Sygic modifies the logic (assume it happens during the lifetime of this version)

Just my two cents here hope it helps.

Thx Op. We are doing an asian holiday in a few weeks. This is a much better navigation option than google maps which is painful to make work without an active data service.

  • Waze anyone ? Works best! 100% free.

  • Trialled a lot of them and settled on this one..
    OsmAnd http://osmand.net/

  • any way to use play store credit to buy this?
