10" Tablet Wanted by 04/01/2018

Need a tablet for my mum before Thursday 4/1/2018, so need a local seller.

Basic browsing, Netflix, basic photo editing, Microsoft Word (or Google Docs).

Currently considering Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus.

Any better options?

    iPad 32gb from officeworks… $397

16 extra gigs for $8… and it will do everything you asked.

Please note, I’m not an Apple fanboi, but I find that 10” Android tablets all feel terrible to use and have a plastic feel in the hand. This is my personal experience, ymmv…

Edit: just so people don’t think I’m a Apple fanboi, you can get the similar in a Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10” for $349 @ Good Guys…

    • that 10” Android tablets all feel terrible to use

Maybe that's because Google cares so much about tablets that it switched off all tablet functionality. Isn't it great using a phone OS made for 5" screens on a 10" screen?

You do realise that apple does the same thing with iOS on the iPads and iPhones, right?

Some app designers create different versions of their apps to cater for the larger screen and some don't.

Kind of agree with both of you on this. Yes, Apple do the same thing, but on Android, it just feels like you're using a really really big phone.

but on Android, it just feels like you're using a really really big phone.

I actually agree with you to a degree.

I intentionally customise my tablet so that it looks a little different to my phone.

I think the biggest single factor for that is when I use Google Chrome. I set it so that it always brings up the "Desktop Version" of websites (as opposed to letting it default to the Mobile version on my phone). And that's what makes me reach for my tablet instead of my phone.

Are you referring to the physical feel of the tablet?

There's plenty of manufacturers of android tablets. If you get a $50 tablet, the it's probably going to be a lower build quality.

One big difference between android and iOS is, with android, you have many options on which device to get based on how much you want to spend.

If you compare a $400 android tablet to a $400 iPad, then you can definitely get the better build quality that's on par with the iPad. Especially the Samsung tablets, they feel quite sturdy.

      • Are you referring to the physical feel of the tablet?

Yes. I have owned several Android tablets, Samsung being the main, and they all feel cheap and plasticy. Exception to that was the Xiaomi MiPad2 I have. But it's just a copy of an iPad mini anyway.

I'm not convinced that the Samsung high end models are any better. They just use nicer plastic. I was only in the Optus store on the weekend looking at a new 10" tablet and played with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10 Z Note 47 (or what ever long complicated name it had) and it still felt like plastic and creaked as i moved it about. Sure, it's an abused store model, but none of the iPads felt like this and they were just as abused.

As i said, I am by no means an Apple fanboi, but when it comes to tablets, for $8 more, I know I would go an iPad (with double the storage) over a Lenovo any day.

        • I'm not convinced that the Samsung high end models are any better.

Strange, I actually like the feel of the Samsung and the Sony tablets (even thought there's no more new Sony tablets).

Guess it's just a matter of personal opinion more than anything else.

        • I totally get that. I work in a machine shop with nice CNC aluminum parts being made all day, so the iPad feel appeals to me more, but I get that different people will like different things, hence my above comment…

This is my personal experience, ymmv…

  • Thanks for the reply. I'd rather stick with an Android tablet for various reasons.

Whilst the Galaxy Tab A is a bit cheaper, it only has 2Gb RAM and the Lenovo has 3Gb and a IPS screen.

    • I am sure your mum cares about 3gb of RAM, IPS displays and Android. Mums are renowned for doing their research into tablet computers…

iPad is now down to $357 with eBay code…

      • I am sure your mum cares about 3gb of RAM

When the pokie machine games don't work on just 2GB RAM, then the mum will care! haha

        • I was going to say, it’s only for making awkward Facebook comments, forwarding the same email uncle Fred just sent everyone and playing pokie machine apps…

Android or iOS, doesn’t matter, it’s always going to be… “how do you do that thing again with the thing?” Or “Yah father touched it and now it won’t work…” or “uncle Fred sent me a video, how do I send it to everyone?”

I have parents, and trust me, they are OS independent. Doesn’t matter what I give them, it’s always the same questions…
