Need Advice on Choosing a New Velocity Credit Card

Hi guys, I am after some advice about choosing a new credit card that earns Velocity points.

Currently I am using a NAB visa and Amex card as part of a package I am paying for, that also gives me an offset account and a discount on my home loan rate. I predominantly use the Amex because it did give a good rate (3 points per dollar, now 1) and for the good Amex offers. Nab is suspending Amex next month hence my interest in maybe a new card.

I have looked at the credit card wiki here and am still not sure what to do. I don't really want to pay a yearly fee for a new credit card when I'm already paying for one through NAB, but on the other hand I really like the Amex deals we regularly see, the superior point per dollar rates, and the bonus points on signup (up to 100,000 atm).

I prefer a velocity card as I already have a significant amount of points and are saving them for a potential family holiday to Fiji at the end of the year.

Any advice is much appreciated :)

  • There's a $0 annual fee Amex Velocity card available if you want a no annual fee option.

    There really isn't much on offer at the moment that combines AMEX and Velocity and bonus points, unless you are willing to pay an annual fee.

  • Personally, I think you'll get better value from having a Velocity Earning VISA with one bank and an Velocity Earning AMEX directly with AMEX.

    Think of the double sign up bonuses!

    • And double the fees?

      • And double the cards to carry?

      • Haha that's me trying to be funny.

        There are ways to easily offset the fees EG;

        AMEX Platinum Edge $195 Fee with $200 Travel Credit
        Virgin Flyer Credit Card $129 Fee with $129 Virgin Travel Credit.

    Thanks for the replies, I might wait a bit and see if any no annual fee Amex come up with a sign up bonus or a better than 1:1 earn

  • Same same I would like a substitute velocity amex

  • Note that that there is also an AMEX partner exclusive Amex Velocity deal with 100k points until 29 Jan (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/350794). It does come with a $375 annual fee, but you get a return domestic airfare, 2 x Virgin domestic lounge passes and two entries to the AMEX lounge.
