Quote for New Gas Hot Water System (Storage), Too Much???

I have a gas Rheem storage hot water system ( 135Litre), which is about 15 years old. It sits on a concrete slab just outside the house.

Just got a quote to replace with same system is $2500 plus GST.

To change over to instant flow type is $3700 plus GST.

Seems really high to me, am I wrong?

I am in Sydney.

A straight switch, like for like, should cost about $800 (unless something is very very unusual)

To go to instant, depends on what you have now

The quote for $2500+GST is a piss take

  • I thought my $1300 invoice for a straight swap (Dux Prodigy for another Prodigy) was bad…

    Good instinct double checking

If you're the type that calls a plumber to supply/remove hws system and not lift a finger, then expect to pay a premium.

On the other hand, if you can arrange to shop around and supply the hws, dispose of the old and organise quotes for a plumber to just install with labour and miscellaneous parts it would be easily less than $300-400 plus the cost to the hws.

Also, depending where you live, tempering valves are mandatory, adding a further $100 to the cost.

  • I was quoted $300 in labour for a straight swap of a gas storage HWS that I sourced during an eBay sale :)

  • Remove and use your hard rubbish collection for the old heater and buy the new heater yourself and have the company deliver it - usally free or minimal fee. install should be in the 300-700 ball park .

  • Maybe you look/dress rich or live in a rich suburb

People say to get three quotes and choose the middle one, dunno if that works well though…

looks like a good idea to get few other quotes
