Incredible to think that you can buy a printer for $19.

On the downside I'm guessing that the ink costs at least twice as much as the printer.

    • +3

Just googled it and it shows $22 for the ink here https://www.inkstation.com.au/hp-63-genuine-black-inkjet-car…
      Which is not too bad

I’m still using a HP Laserjet that I picked up off the side of the road about 5 years ago.

I’ve printed over a 1000 pages and this thing just refuses to die…

      • +2

Best way to go, my last 18,000 page refurbished HP toner cost just $35.

Low capacity ink cartridges are included.

HP website says only Mac-compatible upto OS X 10.10.

      We're upto OS X 10.13 in Jan 2018.

Can anyone confirm if this will be junk to those using Mac OS X 10.11 and beyond?

My old HP Laserjet 1020 that I picked up off the side of the road is working fine with my iMac running the latest OS.

I don’t know why but this printer keeps working even with all the OS updates.

I still use a HP Deskjet I bought for $17 in 2012. I print barely 5 sheets a year, though I scan a lot and the scanner still works perfectly. When it dies I'll use the more recent model purchased for $18 in 2016. I'm still tempted to get this as another backup.

Hi PJC, I think you are right, even the ink cartidges are packed in the same plastic forms, but I do believe that the ones they give you is a lot less ink than the ones you purchase separately

Cheaper to buy another printer than it is to buy replacement cartridges.

I was the same as you, however I recently bought a Canon MX726 printer due to the fact that it can still use astonishingly cheap third party ink cartridges. See https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/268765. I bought the Mx726 during 20% eBay at the good guys.

(off topic) I like the idea of printing photos at home as going to get prints done at BigW/Kmart/Officeworks never seems to get off my to-do list. I also have a 5 year old who seems to like photography as well, so this can help.

My third party ink has just arrived today and i'm about to do a test between them both to see if I can notice the difference.

My stepdaughter has an older model Canon and after several purchases I confirm this eBay vendor is efficient and his products are trustworthy.

        • +1

Thank you. The ones I have just bought also seem quite reputable, only a few negative reviews. 4 sets at $28. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/20-x-canon-compatible-PGI-650-XL….

        • @b2dz: Well done.

        • +1

FYI I just tried this and I am surprised at the quality of the third party ink. I printed a couple of portraits (on the included 6x4 premium paper) and both turned out excellent. The Canon ink is still noticeably better however the third party ink holds its own, particularly considering it's about 15% of the price.

        • @b2dz: Great value. My stepdaughter has forgotten how original ink compared to what she now uses. Never a problem so far.

        • +1

          @PJC:

Cool. What do you use for photo paper? Photo paper is a topic that is seemingly more complex than I first thought. The price of some of the premium paper from Canon/HP etc is, well, large.

        • @b2dz: I'm sorry, I can't help you. We don't print photos.

How is this printer compared with the Officeworks $19 Canon Pixma Home Wireless Inkjet MFC Printer MG2960?

    • I prefer hp printers as it is much easier to print from your smartphone.
And the software is much easier to use (eg. scanner)
I have Canon and hp but i only use hp now.

    • +2

I think Canon is better priced because it is wireless.
Both of them cheapest for a while, so I bought 2 Canon, less than ink cost. I will investigate refill or buy cheap no brand ones from Ebay

Hey, it is less than packet of smoke..

      • You waste money on cigarettes?

        • +2

          I don't smoke.

        • @Sabric: That's a relief.

    • I have that one. I'm sure it came with full-size cartridges as it's still going after 3 months of use, once a week for photos.

It's much cheaper to buy the whole printer just for the cartridges than to buy them separately.

      • +1

You can use third party cartridges but yes, I get your point. It's a sad state of affairs and terrible for our planet.

    landfill.

    • The gov should create a rule that requires manufacturers to take back and recycle products like this when the user has finished with it.
I bet they wouldn't be $19 after that.

      • They should make it out of wafer cone. Eat it up when you're finished with it.

srsly, the onus should be with the manufacturers to dispose of it after you print your 500 pages.

  • I have this and yes the ink cost is unacceptable.
Fortunately I also got a Dell b/w laser printer under $90 from graysonline.

HP used to produce high-end machines, but now their ink business is most profitable, I guess.

How crazy is it that it is cheaper to buy another printer than it is to buy replacement cartridges.

Genuine HP63 Replacement black and colour cartridges at a total cost of around $50+ will yield a total of ~355 pages.

Two printers at a cost of $38 will yield a total of ~430 pages

Three printers at a cost of $57 will yield a total of ~645 pages

    • Has been like that for years unfortunately.

      • And the establishment makes the average citizen feel guilty for ruining the environment… Meanwhile making things in local factories that are designed to last is disincentivised.

$5 cashback on this printer for whoever bought it

    http://h41201.www4.hp.com/AdLanding/au/en/16305/

Also $10 off $100 spend if anyone buying online with anything else.

Lastly free delivery on $100 plus

oh and wish gift cards for 5% off cash rewards.

if you do add all these i think the printer works out to be $11.15
