Holden Commodore VE Left Blinker Flashing Fast?

Hi, just as i was driving home and turning left i noticed that my left blinker was flashing much faster compared to my right blinker. When turning on the hazards, the blinking rate is normal. I have checked all the connections and globes. Is this an indication that the left blinker needs to be changed soon?

Check all 4 corners blinkers, usually means one is blown.

    • Thanks will test this out tomorrow.

In some cars a blown fuse can also cause this, but per mskeggs above, it's probably a blown blinker bulb.

        • If the fuse was blown presumably it wouldn't flash at all? But yes I've seen this issue fixed by replacing a fuse.

  • Either bulb a bulb is out or the flasher unit has gone.

Just have to take you left hand turns at twice the speed.

  • Drive much faster when turning left, and the blink rate will appear normal.

    • Smart… As Op approaches light speed the blinker will appear to not blink at all

You need to top up the blinker fluid

    • And make sure to buy some elbow grease…

      • I’m still standing here hoping my long weight might come in soon…

    • OP has probably topped up with the wrong weight blinker fluid. Probably 10W30 instead of 15W40.

      • Went from mineral to full synthetic…

Excluding BCM and LED light assemblies of the latest model vehicles and the rarer non Australian vehicles, there are only two causes for incorrect flashing rate/minute, and yes, this is covered under Australian Design Rules and for RWC.

Of the 3 globes on either side, one is not functioning for a multitude of reasons -: corrosion, wiring/connections and most common after a faulty globe is poor Earthing.
Least common and secondly is the Flasher Can on older vehicles, or Electronic CU on more modern vehicles.

Walk around the vehicle to find if a light assembly is not flashing, and then fault find and rectify, and if all the lights are functioning, then it will be in the control unit/s.

99.9% - dead globe. Or as stated - check the fluids.

    • Best answer so far.

I've never seen a commodore that hasn't done this

  • if the globes are OK, change the flasher can

    • Flasher can would cause left and right blinkers to flash fast, not just one side, unless its a car with two flasher cans. Don’t know many that do.

As other users said above, 99% certain its a blown globe, or one of the globes was replaced with a cheap eBay LED globe.

      • when I was a mechanic in the 70's, a crook flasher can make one side flash faster than the other; but it was usually a blown globe

      • Only ever one Flasher Can. Two, as in twin/split circuits sharing the single unit, since the dark ages.
Plus to note: One F/Can for indicators, and one F/Can for Hazard lights.

Sell the car, buy a BMW. No more worries about indicators, as I don’t think BMW’s come with them…

True, Lexus vehicles are another make that don't come with indicators.

Don't worry about it, indicating is optional these days anyway.

  • Thanks for all the reply. Some how opening and closing the hood solved the issue. Globe must've be loose and the vibration knocked it back in. Changing the indicator lights anyway since the stock one has been in there since 2011.

      Preventative maintenance!

As a mechanic, I award you a gold star for forward thinking…

(and yes, closing the hood or bonnet can be enough to move the globe enough to make it work again. Be sure to give all the contacts a good clean up while you are changing bulbs…)
