Cheap Yet Functional Backup Phone

Hi all.

My Nexus 5X has finally crapped the bed (again). I'm going through the warranty process, but this is the 2nd time it's happened, so I'm moving onto a different phone regardless. I've ordered a Xiaomi Mi A1 online, but it's probably going to be a couple of weeks before it arrives. So in the meantime, I need a cheap and not so nasty backup phone.

My only criteria is that it's cheap (under $100), available in store locally (waiting for shipping times would defeat the point), and unlocked. Obviously it'd be a nice bonus if it doesn't run like a dogs breakfast and the battery lasts more than an hour, but I'm not expecting miracles from this price range.

I'm currently looking at the Moto C from Officeworks for $99 (https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/motorola-m…), but any other suggestions?

  • Xperia XA? Probably will be extremely hard to find stock though.

    • Damn, that does look like a nice handset for the price. I'll keep and eye out.

If it's Android 1GB is the useable minimum unless you think repeatedly waiting multiple seconds every few seconds for apps to do things is fun.

Make sure it's software can be updated, with the new vulnerability, you will be exposed to viruses if it cant

  • I wouldn't buy a Moto C. It just screams terrible. Not even a 720p screen. 1GB of RAM? Ouch.

I'd go with the Nokia 3 if I had to buy local. Has been as cheap as $107.

Right now it's $139, but it ain't a bad when it comes with a free $30 SIM.

  • If you were in Melbourne I would loan you my old iphone 4. Maybe there is someone in Perth who has an unloved one in a draw they can loan to you?

  • To be honest. I always have a alcatel or similar $20 black and white 2weeks battery phone in the hpuse! that is as reliable as it can get. If u need something more modern, Nokia and Sony do decent products at modest cost, also HTC has nice option. If chinaphone u thinking, i bought a DOOGEE y200 for less than $80 on amazon and it flys!
