  • Do you know if this can be used overseas if not unlocked first?

    • +3

You would need to unlock the phone to be able to use it overseas.

  • +1

Do these typically work with Kogan SIMs?

    • +3

Yes Kogan sim cards will work on any phone that's locked to vodafone.

      • +2

Not always. My Nokia 3310 needed to be unlocked to work with Kogan.
Lucky I was able to get a Vodafone store to unlock it for me free.

        • +2

How did you get them to do that?

        • +1

          @Savas:
Just went into a store and said I needed to use it overseas.
They sent an email or something and 24 hours later when I went to the unlock page there was no fee.

        • @jimbobaus: wow you're a legend!!

  • +2

Does this have a notification led?

    • +4

I was wondering when you would ask this.

Edit: It doesn't look like it has one.

      • +2

Gosh even our $60 Alcatel has one.

  • +2

    Any cheap unlocking services?

  • +12

I love that this has NFC. It seems like a lot of cheaper Android handsets including Xiaomi don't have it which is a shame.

    • anybody out to confirm oz version is not nfc castrated? Coles already got it out also Kogan y or n?

  • +3

    Looks like a good deal

  • +7

The reviews of this phone weren't that great with respect to basic performance but it's great to finally see phones with Band 28 and NFC being sold in Australia for almost as low as $100 (though locked).

I'm just hoping these Sony and Nokia phones bring down Moto prices further.

    • +2

yes, we are starting to see more entry level handsets cheap with features for the australian market.

would be nice for the moto g5s plus to drop a bit more in price.

Will this phone (without unlocking) work on another overseas Vodafone network like NZ and Fiji please?

    • +5

Not sure on answer but great question seen for first time here lol.

      • +1

        Many thanks..

    • +7

I've asked Vodafone AUS this question before (about using a Vodafone AUS locked phone on the Vodafone UK network). I was told that even though it's the "same" company, they are considered different networks, so I would still have to get the phone unlocked. That was a couple of years ago now though, you might want to contact them again to check:

      • +3

        Many thanks..

    • +4

From what I have experience it will not work in Fiji without unlocking.

      • +2

        Many thanks..

  • +5

You can unlock it for just $18. The catch is you have to go there https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/In-Store-Unlock-code-Service-Vod…

      Homer: Ooh, that's bad.

Shopkeeper: But it comes with a free frogurt!

      Homer: That's good.

Shopkeeper: The frogurt is also cursed.

      Homer: That's bad.

Shopkeeper: But you get your choice of toppings.

      Homer: That's good!

Shopkeeper: The toppings contain potassium benzoate.

      [Homer looks puzzled]

      Shopkeeper: …That's bad.

      Homer: Can I go now?

Best mate bought one for $189 on ebay, its pretty spectacular with stock android 7.1.1 on it
but no fingerprint scanner like the Nokia 5 has!

Also this may or may not get the Planed Oreo Update because of the Mediatek CPU .. all other Nokia 2/5/6/8 use Snapdragons, bit of a hot topic at the moment

  • If you have enrolled Amex Apple Pay get $10 credit back too.

    • How? Apple Pay is for iPhones. Android Pay is what would be on the Nokia 3 …

      • you buy the phone with apple pay and save $10.
after buying use the commbank deal to save a further $20 on subsequent purchases using your new phone.

    • +1

You might be thinking of the Commbank 3x $20 cashback for using tap & pay through the CBA app, which would effectively bring the price of this phone down to $49 if you meet the conditions.

This or the Sony XA for $10 more?

Sony has a 16MP rear facing.

I haven't had good experiences with Nokia or Sony, so still not sure. Not for me, but my brother. So far having good experiences with Motorola G5 Plus (different market I know).

    • +3

      Where is the Sony available?

      • -1

        following

    • +2

The XA is slimmer and lighter and has a much better SOC. It has Nougat after you upgrade and there is a decent amount of that 16gb available for apps once you do so. I don't even look at cameras at this price range, if it has one you're gonna use it regardless lol

      • Looks like a good phone but it doesn't have nfc.

        • +2

The XA does have NFC i'm using one with Android pay

        • @bonz: Ah my mistake.

    • Or the LG Stylus DAB+ for $99 @ Aldi

      • +1

Is this another fictional price, or do you have a source?

        • @CVonC:
So a clearance item at one shop.

        • @manic:

Well yeah. But sometimes you can get Aldi to price match other Aldis in the same area. Regardless, it's not fictional.

        • -1

          @CVonC:
All you had to do was specify the location, not imply it was national.

        • +1

I believe it was in $119 in the latest Vodafone catalogue.

  • Has anyone bought this? Just wondering if it has much vodafone branding on handset and/or in software? Will be unlocking for use on Telstra

    • +1

I haven't bought this phone but I have bought a vodafone locked phone before and the only vodafone branding it had was apps that could be uninstalled.

      • thanks for the reply mate

    • Can anyone confirm if Kogan SIM is accepted in this? (it is in some locked Voda handsets, but depends on the type of lock)

      • +2

Kogan sim is good to use!

    • +1

Picked one up this afternoon. No branding, has the my Vodafone app pre installed.

      • can you try to unlock your phone here? how much does it cost?

      • I cannot find any in Greenacre Sydney. Does anyone know where there is stock?

        • +3

I got one from Wetherill Park. Wasn't on display, had to ask if they had it

        • @Layze: Went there. Sadly no stock and Manager said if it was not on display, they dont have stock.

        • @vivekviswa: Damn. I'm guessing most stores only have limited number of stock. Did the manager even check the cupboard?!

        • @Layze: Nope. She did not check as far as I know and her attitude was more like "Get out of here" People at Chullora Woolworths were better. They atleast rang neighbouring woollies for me,and said few were on order but not sure if or when they'll come :)

  • First impressions? Does it have NFC? Missing from Vodafone spec list.

  • Do Woolies customer service have access to a centralized database? Sometimes when I ring up they can give me a list of stores that have stock but other times they tell me to call up the stores directly.

I bought this yesterday for my Mum. Put a Telstra sim in it immediately. Paid $50 for the unlock through Vodafone, worked easily. Didn't see any Vodfone app on the phone at all. Phone is nice to hold, speaker is loud, no notification led, not the fastest phone but adequate, camera is OK for low price, I don't think the battery will last if you are a heavy user. Phone is a perfect upgrade for my parents, but probably not for my kids.

  • Will this work on Amaysim?

    • Yes but only if you unlock the phone.

  • +1

Has anyone Ben able to unlock this device without paying the extra $50? Or found any cheap unlocking service except for us having to go to NSW from WA? I'm looking for a remote unlocking service for cheap price ?

    • I'd like to know that too
