Vivofit 3 has amazing battery life and is sturdy. Battery has lasted over a year for family member who wears it every day

    • I second the battery life. I've also knocked mine countless times and still works perfectly. It's a great product and would definitely recommend.

  • Been looking to upgrade my Vivosmart for a little while now. Glad I waited!

    • The wrist band of the VS3 tends to tear, so havibg local warranty would be sth to consider. I had to use mine and Garmin replaces my unit . The wristband only lasted 6 months.

Do garmin not honour units purchased OS? I had a Mio fuse, purchased from Amazon US, replaced by Mioglobal in AU, 6 months after purchase because of a tear in the band.

I've owned the Vivofit 2, 3 and now have a Mi Band 2. I'd recommend the Mi Band over these two as a far better product that is much cheaper. The bonus of these though is that the battery lasts 1 year+

    • do you have any opinion as to if certain brands or models are more accurate than others?
some reviews say a tracker isnt totally accurate but im not sure if thats all trackers at certain price points being X accurate and then the next step up in price gives you Y accurate?

      • +1

Yeah absolutely. I've actually tried quite a few of the different brands and in terms of accuracy:

        Mi Band / Fitbit
        Garmin
        Tom Tom
Samsung (I had the first gen gear, so recent Samsungs may be better)

        • See I would definitely say Garmin is more accurate than Fitbit. My friend and I were curious… She takes a longer stride than I do so theaterically her steps should be lower but on a day out, her Fitbit was showing significantly more steps than my Garmin. (We checked the story steps too and only looked at the addition of new steps since being together). We then did a few tests counting our steps as we walked. My Garmin was quite spot on, within -10-10 steps, but hers was always over.

          @jjjaar:

I found the Mi Bands and Fitbits were pretty close to steps taken. Garmin was like 5-10% more. TomTom was okay while walking, but tended to register steps from me sitting on the desk using the computer. So it was like +15-20% out. All of them apart from the Fitbit and Mi Band gave me a ton of extra steps while driving or riding my motorbike.

        • @jjjaar: REad reviews stating FitBit often over counts steps, not the worse thing in the world, I think getting accurate HR is more important.

        • Are you comparing trackers to each other or using some other control method? Fitbit reviews state they notoriously over count. Which Garmin did you test?

        • @wolfshooter: Garmin vivofit 3. Was literally two friends on holidays for 2 weeks (doing the exact same things) and the Fitbit was 2000 higher on most days despite her longer stride (and on occasion when I would go out for a walk when she stayed in). Not the most scientific of tests, but good to know reviews have found the same. I'd never looked into it much further.

        • @FabMan: I've never seen any reviews but good to know I wasn't imagining it.

No not the worst thing in the world, but can be dodgy for things like flybuys/Medibank where if you hit 10k steps a day you get extra flybuys points.

However HR accuracy is definitely more important than steps so if Fitbit is better at that that's a positive for them.

How is Mi Band far better? Apart from being cheaper with far less battery life.

      • +3

I prefer the design and the screen to the Vivofit 3. The Mi Band has additional bluetooth features (notifications, caller ID, etc) and has a built in heart rate monitor which the Garmin lacks (although you can sync with a chest strap). The Mi Band syncs stats regularly and easily, while the Garmin can be a bit tricky to get it to sync as it avoids doing so to conserve battery. Overall I think the Garmin is a great band but the Mi Band is just better.

Edit: As far as battery life goes, 3 weeks is pretty standard for the Mi Band if you turn off caller ID and notifications. 3 weeks is enough for me. Durability wise, they're about the same. Both are fully waterproof and you can swap the bands out / buy replacement ones on eBay.

    • Is the Mi band waterproof/resistant? Can you swim with it on? I would be surprised if the hrm is anything like the vivosmart 3 but happy to be corrected.

      • I think so. I take a shower with Mi band. Still works. Not for diving though

        • Don't most band manufacturers recommend taking the band off when you shower to give your skin a chance to breathe and clean under the band? I take mine off for showers as the tight bands tend to irritate and you need to wear the mio bands tight for accurate hrm metrics.

      • +2

I've been swimming with my Mi Band 2 (until I lost it anyway - the band came loose and it fell out), and it continued to work fine.
The HRM doesn't really work if there's water between it and your skin though.

    • Different products, thus the price difference (i had both)

  • +3

A benefit of Garmin / Fitbit is a lot more other companies interface with their API's

Eg GMHBA health fund has new AIA Vitality Plus plans where you get points for hitting step targets, doing exercises and other healthy things, accumulate enough points and you get $$$ vouchers

    • +1

I love the aia vitality plans. If you get to platinum level there are lots of perks like 50% cash back on your qantas flights, I think 4x a year. I only started a few months ago so not quite there yet.

  • I know this seems like apples and oranges but how would the vivosmart3 compare to the Samsung gear fit pro2?

    Any help is appreciated

  • I have a Mi Band 2, but would the Vivofit 3 be worth it? Only Pro is battery life…

  • Can recommend the VF3, its as simple device but thats what makes it great IMO. Battery life is amazing and im told the accuracy of the Garmins is better than most. Someone actually gave me an Apple Watch which I have used for the last 3 weeks alongside the VF3 and its a total PITA. Charging it every 48h or so just kills the experience. Im actually going to give it back. Havent taken the VF3 off since August.

  • Got one for the wife, she got rid of her Charge 2 for it.
