Thoughts on The Xiaomi Ultra Short Throw Laser Projector

Has anybody on the OzB community purchased this Xiaomi Projector? I see some very good reviews about the product online and I also like the kinda sleek look of the projector compared to some of the other big names out there.

Pros:

  • This thing can apparently project a clear image upto 150 diagonal inches on a wall/screen
  • The built in speakers sound very good.
  • Very reasonably priced. (Slightly below AUD 2400 with a promocode)
  • Takes Ethernet, USB & HDMI input
  • Dual band wifi enabled
  • 3D Support

Cons:

  • Chinese UI (which can be changed to semi-English with a little effort)
  • Lighting in the room has to be minimal for a good viewing experience
  • 1080p display (can take 4K input and down-samples it)

So wouldn't this be a better option for some people instead of spending a bomb on 65-75" TVs? I'm seriously considering getting this for the theater room in the new house. Any good reason not to get this and go for a 55-65" TV instead? I'm surprised to see no discussions on OzB regarding this product considering the fact that it is a Xiaomi offering after all!

  • Price must be missing some decimal places…

some discussion but no actual reviews yet.

    • Ye I read that.. but as you said, no actual reviews. Just opinions or complaints about delivery and stuff

        • Ye saw that one too :D

But the few people who gave an opinion after personally using the device either spoke a lot about stuff that I didn't understand or they compared it to other projectors. I want to know how this would fare against a Big screen TV after weighing the pros and cons.

That being said, the general opinion seems to be that the product is really good. The only real complaint I have seen from anyone is the rainbow RGB bleed thingy.

  • Might be best to wait for LG's version to come out this year, and see how they go.

    • Or you can also grab the Dell Advanced 4k Laser Projector S718QL for a princely sum of $5999 US dollars. Imagine all the extra deals you can browse on Ozbargain with a 150" 4k display.

  • Worth keeping in mind as well that it's only 1080P - it supports a 4K input, but downsamples and displays in 1080P.

  • My experience is that projector images are washed out and a little blurry. On a TV you get crispness. Of course you have no idea until you try it, or read lots of reviews that have a consensus on the issue :-p

  • +1

Same boat, been trying to find a proper review. The one real review I did read was very favorable though.

It all comes down to the brightness. Most protectors need dark rooms to be worthy of my acceptance. This one is supposed to be exceptionally bright, but again other than the tech demo I've try to really see anyone show just how good it could be in a somewhat lit room.

If you find anything, please tell me. It looks and sounds likely something I want.

    • That is a good price! But I'm not looking to buy till next year so hopefully the price should drop further and maybe they will come out with a 4K model by then :)
