Can mobile service providers cancel a grandfathered plan that is still currently active and force you to take up a new plan?

If you don't like the new plan just change providers, loyalty means nothing these days

I'm still on a Woolworths/optus plan since it was officially cancelled in 2012. But yes, they can cancel anytime.

Time to move on, there are better deals out there now.

I changed to the Kogan Large Unlimited 16gb every 30 days, 365 Days $254.30 ($21.19 per month)

From memory the Woolworths old grandfathered plan, now kept running by Optus is $26.00 for 45 days ($17.33 per month) for only 5gb (3.33gb per month) & it's not unlimited calls/sms. Also it runs on the 3g network, Kogan is 4g on Vodafone.

There is a Kogan Medium Unlimited 6gb every 30 days, 365 Days $205.60 ($17.13 per month)

  • Yup, I had a spare number and Optus cancelled my old plan and put me on a new plan that significantly shortened the expiry of credits.

  • There’s only a requirement if you’re on a contract (for example, if they change the terms of the contract then you need to have the option to cancel the contract at no penalty), but once the contract period is up, there’s no guarantee. I’m guessing this is for a long expiry plan, as generally data has gotten much cheaper over the past few years.

  • I've got a pretty good Sim Only 24 month contract which has expired in Nov 2017. Unlimited national and international calls (selected countries) and 12GB data with another Sim Only shared plan for $75. Was given $15 goodwill credit for the life of the contract since I've been with them for 8 years. All other service providers are quite skimpy on international calls. I'll hang on to it for as long as possible. Thanks for your info guys.
