      • Was free beginning of January

        • still free (but slow download) today

  • I'm going to Hong Kong tomorrow for 5 days, is there anyway I can pick this phone locally?

  • If I dropped the phone and smashed the screen, would Samsung Australia be willing to repair it? (for full price obviously) Or would I need to send it to either a 3rd party repairer or back to Hong Kong?

    • I'm not sure, but does it matter (is there a difference between 3rd party and Samsung Australia except the latter is probably more expensive)?

      • Repair by the official service centre should retain water proofing. Also I'll be paying with Amex so I'll have screen insurance included (thus price isn't a big issue).

        • +1

As per reports on the internet,Samsung Australia wont touch grey stock even if you are ready to pay full price. Those are the tricks they use to peddle the same phone for $500 more for "australian" stock.

        • @techno2000:

Thanks for the info, looks like I'll be waiting a bit longer then! Regret missing the Black Friday sale -_-

  • Anyone know what is the usual postage time. It says
    Delivery:
Estimated between Thu. 8 Feb. and Tue. 27 Feb.
We ship items via a tracked, insured courier. Items are primarily shipped from our Hong Kong warehouse. Items stocked in Australia are sent from a Sydney or Melbourne warehouse.

If its end of Feb thats a long wait.

    • +1

Ordered mine on boxing day (26th Dec). Was Shipped on 3rd Jan, and received 9th Jan. Exactly 2 weeks.

      • +1

        similar time for me

        • Thanks guys. That makes me feel better. Waiting for more than 2 weeks is outrageous. I might order. So I’m assuming happy with Amaysim customer service ?

        • +1

          @AeyJey:

yep happy, not sure why they state such a long postage time

        • @spacejase:

Also just wondering any issues sending the mobile phones to PO Box or Parcel Box. I couldn’t find anything on the actual listing.

But going through the feedback some people said they couldn’t send it to po box and amaysim just cancelled the order.

Being in a kind of a remote place a lot of parcels getting lost and stolen by Aus Post/Other contractors when asked to be delivered to home address. The tracking says delivered but many people doesn’t receive it. Many complaints been in to post office and head office and they still haven’t done anything. So really worried to get anything which doesn’t do delivery to po box or parcel box.

        • +1

          @AeyJey:

fair enough I can't really help you with that one except - get it delivered to a friend's place?

        • @spacejase:
Send email to them. Hopefully they can reply before the deal ends. That’s the thing with the whole town. Being middle of nowhere means the next nearest place is 1500km away.

        • @AeyJey:

I'd send it to the parents then and get it from them later
maybe they could put the firmware on for you :)

        • @spacejase:
Ahaha guess what. Parents live here in town too. I might get it send to friends in Perth and pick it up when I visit next time.

        • @AeyJey:

          yep good idea

For anyone still wondering, I can still download the firmware for the N950F/DS note 8 from sammobile

    • Thanks, can you confirm which file to be downloaded for AU firmware on N950FD model?

      • +1

Although I never got around to doing it, a few people provided tips on how to flash the Note 8 when I asked in a forum post.

        Here is the link: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/352796

tldr: Use the file which has the CSC N950FOLN2BQKG if you are going for the unlocked no carrier option.

      • +2

use the Telstra one if you have a Telstra sim, optus if you are using optus sim, Vodafone if you are using Vodafone sim
you can use the generic one XSA also

  • Hi Guys,

Can I confirm both Note 8 and S8 Plus dual-SIM support 4G+3G on standby and active slot?
I read the specs mentioning that the standby slot only supports 2G, this means that we cant use dual sim on this phone?

    Thanks!

    • My SIM no 1 says mobile network type "LTE"
      SIM no 2 says
      Mobile network type "UMTS"

UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) is a so-called "third-generation (3G)," broadband , packet -based transmission of text, digitized voice, video, and multimedia at data rates up to and possibly higher than 2 megabits per second ( Mbps)

    • I can confirm that for the Note 8, I've tested it on mine. Not 100% sure for the S8, but will probably be the same.

  • Can anyone confirm if the Note 8 Orchid Grey, Grey import Dual Sim.
Is it 3g/4g on 1st sim and 2g on the other sim (Like note 5)

Or is it 3g/4g on 1st sim and 3g on the other sim

The description on the page is confusing. 2g is useless as you know and I must Must have a dual sim and been waiting for under 1000 note 8.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-Galaxy-Note8-in-Maple-Go…?

    • I have the Maple Gold from Amaysim, and Sim 1 is 4G, second sim is 3G.
Im pretty sure all the imported Note 8's from Amaysim have dual sim capability, since the model is N950FD, where D stands for Duos or Dual Sim.

      • It says on the ebay page. Thats why im confused. I think the description is wrong as I already researched this.

        SIMSingle SIM (Nano-SIM) (N950F - Australian stock)
Hybrid Dual SIM (Nano-SIM, dual stand-by) (One 3G/4G SIM and One 2G SIM) (N950FD - Direct import)

        • Well, when I put my Optus and Aldi Sim in, I was able to assign calls to one sim and data to the other. This would mean that both sims were working as 4G and 3G respectively. Otherwise if one sim was 2G it would have just said Unknown Network, because I dont think Aldi supports 2G. But, currently I am using only one sim. I might test it again tomorrow and see if I can upload a screen shot.

        • @rosrav: Is it amaysim phone. This is info they just sent me as message
          Hi,
The Direct import with model number N950FD is dual sim version. It supports 3G and 2G only on first slot and 2G only on second slot.

I have a note 5 and when 2g turned off, so did my phone connection to that sim.

          Im confused and pissed

        • @australiabpo:

Yea I got mine from amaysim eBay.

  • WTF. This is the exact info they responded to me after asking if it was 4g/3g and 3g/2g OR 4g/3g and 2g

    They said
    Hi,
The Direct import with model number N950FD is dual sim version. It supports 3G and 2G only on first slot and 2G only on second slot.

I have been waiting months for this phone to come down to affordable. Now I get this shit when ready to buy.

Has anyone actually got this phone FROM amaysim in their hand to confirm. I assume info is wrong…

    • +1

Alright I can 100% confirm that N950FD supports 4G for one sim and the other 3G. The images below prove it. I tested incoming and outgoing calls on both sims and it works perfectly. Note you can only use mobile data from the Sim which is assigned as 4G…which makes sense because you would want 4G speeds.

      Image 1
      Image 2

    • Boom. I said they must have wrong info and telling customers the wrong Info and asked them to put a sim in the phone. And I get this Shite!!!

New message from: amaysim (149Turquoise Star)
      Hi,
As per listing, the device - Direct Import supports 3G and 2G only on first slot and 2G only on second slot.
It is the Au stock that supports 4G however this is the single sim version.
Please see attached file for the bands supported by the device.

    $884 best deal ever!

  • my s8+ is totally broken from a drop with 1.5 years of contract left at woolworths. Worth fixing the screen for $550 or buying a new one for $750?

    • Buy a new one for $750 and sell the broken one on ebay or gumtree for parts.Probably get around $200 for the broken one anyway.

    • last time i asked samsung it was $230 to fix the screen?

      • I think that's the price if you order the screen and replace it yourself. You will most likely also break the back cover which is another $20-$30 bucks

        • nah, not DIY! that's the price i was given from the samsung store if i take it to the service centre at homebush to replace screen. that and also the samsung australia facebook page when i msged them.

  • I just saw all the posts about sim speeds
Definitely 4g on the first and 3g on the second

Also if you flash your carriers rom, ie you are using optus sim and apply optus rom, you will be able to use the voice over LTE function which means phone calls over the 4g network, rather than most phones which revert to 3g for phone calls but maintain 4g for data

That's what I get using this phone

  • I ordered 2 of these from Amaysim together in one ebay transaction. Will I be charged import tax for this? The phones were $908 each after discount. I've asked them to ship them separately hopefully they can..

    • +1

I read that even with one phone the price is greater than $1000 because they send in the receipt for before discount. But, still I also read somewhere in this post that Amaysim had already taken care of tax.

      • yup confirmed with them, they will pay stamp duty and taxes

  • I ended up buying this one since I couldn't get the answer I needed (And knew was 4g 1st sim, 3G 2nd sim). They say 3G only on 1st sim and 2G in 2nd sim. Idiots!!!
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/355809

    • that's N9500 model. So probably have snapdragon.

      • Is that good or bad

        • +1

Speed/performance-wise, they are the same…as one commented under this [video] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gqoMJW1bwU) Its the diference between a ferrari enzo with titanium wheels and a ferrari enzo with carbon fiber wheels…. still a ferrari enzo

However, be careful and do not flash your device to get AU ROMs (I think that may the main limitation). Not having AU ROMs may mean you can't download updates in AU but I'm not sure. Also can't use Samsung Pay probably.

        • @superready:
Flashing roms through odin is not rooting and does not break Knox

Also roms are not processor dependent so I can't see why they it wouldn't work on snapdragon

          Samsung pay works fine
Updates also over the air no problem

        • @spacejase: Thanks, peace of mind for @australiabpo

        • @spacejase: as per threads n9500 will get brick with au firmware update. Will find the ref and share

        • +1

          @b4rgainhunter:

no worries, I didn't find anything about this on sammobile.com

ps if you have the N9500, you have to flash the suitable N9500 rom, not the N950F/DS rom!

if you flash the wrong rom, of course you will have problems

        • @spacejase: make sense. But seem like installing other firmware will only give 64gb space not more than that: https://www.sammobile.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39989

        • +1

          @b4rgainhunter:

That person flashed a 9500 note with a 950U1 rom not the N9500 rom which is readily available

          Why would you do that
          Seems pointless

          Further note:
"I've used N950F ROMs (which I believe are all 64gb capacity so far) on my 256gb N950N and I still had the full amount of storage available"

          Source:

          https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-8/help/flashing…

        • edit there is no N9500 rom for the Australian market, flashing is therefore not possible with the N9500

  • There has now been a few dollars price drop with a few of the models.
For example, Note 8 Maple Gold has been droped from $1135 to $1125 - $10 cheaper.

    • Thanks Updated.

  • Hey guys,

I'm considering purchasing the N8 in Rose Pink. But have some questions before buying it. I've just messaged Amaysim but any input would be appreciated.

Can I only use one sim card or do I have to use two?

Can I still make phone calls, text message and use my data if I only use one sim card?

Do I need to do anything to the phone if I want to use it in Australia? (I.e flash..don't really understand what that means :/)

Will any Apps be affected due to the phone being a direct import and not Australian stock?

What does the 2 year warranty include/cover?

Is there a microSD slot? (I think I read it is where the second sim card would go. If this is the case, will taking or loading photos be slower than a phone that has slot made just for a microSD?

Ok last but not least.. If 4g isn't compatible for that phone will 3g definitely work on the 1st sim?

    Sorry for all the questions!!

    • +1

It is not mandatory to use two sims. I am only using one sim with my Note 8 from Amaysim.

Yes all phone features work even if you are only using one sim. Just think of the dual sim thing as an added feature. It is pretty much identical to any Australian Note 8, but can support two sims if you need it.

No you do not need to do anything for the phone to work in Australia. It will work perfectly fine out of the box. I have not flashed or installed anything else on my phone either. The only thing you wont be able to use is Samsung Pay. But Android Pay works if you still need to use mobile payment.

      Apps affected - Samsung Pay.

You can read more about amaysim's warranty here. Amaysim 2yr Warranty Info

Yes there is a microSD slot. It has the same speed as any Note 8 without dual sim support. Again, just think of the dual sim support as an added feature, it doesn't take anything away from the phone. If you dont use two sims you can use 1 Sim and an SD Card. If you need to use 2 Sims then you have to take the SD Card out.

This phone is 4G compatible. I am getting the "4G+" symbol when I use my data.

      • Thank you so much forbyoyr help! :) Just purchased it. Do you have any recommendations for a good light/thin case?

        • +2

Considering you purchased a Rose Pink Note 8, you might want to get a clear back case from Spigen. I can highly recommend spigen cases, they are very durable and can protect your phone fairly well. I use a spigen case on my Note 8 aswell. The clear cases are fairly thin and light. Also can recommend the seller. They ship really fast aswell. I used the same spigen case on my galaxy s6 for 2yrs without damaging the phone.

          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Galaxy-Note-8-Case-Genuine-SPIGE…

Also for my note 8, I got a thin clear case in the box. I think Samsung gives you a case. But I dont use it since its very thin and does not protect the phone from drops. But it will protect the back from scratches.

        • @rosrav: Thank you for your help again! :) I was eyeing a Spigen one but wasn't sure if they were good / where to buy.

  • Do you think price will drop after the release of S9 in 1 month?

    • Most likely the price of the S8/S8+ will decrease. Also I dont think you will see a huge difference in price until end of March, since the rumored shipping/release date of the S9/S9+ is 16th March.

As for the Note 8, the price probably wont drop significantly until late August/September.

But in general, both phone are going to depreciate over time. You will see a $30 - $50 decrease every month or two.

  • Has anyone tried using wifi calling/Volte services with the N9500 version? Without flashing ?

    • I dont know for sure, but I think that any imported Note 8 would have to be flashed to a local carrier firmware, in order to access VoLTE function.
