Where do you get your Nespresso Pods from?

Hi all,

I've just purchased a Nespresso Breville CitiZ & Milk machine, which is my first foray into this world (well, got it on points).

Just wondering where you get your Nespresso Pods from? Do you buy them online via the store? Or through resellers on eBay? Or do you simply buy Nespresso-compatible pods from somewhere else - and if so, how do they compare?

Also, for a first timer to pods, are there any small sampler packs available for me to figure out what I like? The smallest I've seen is a $70 Discovery pack from the official store.

Thanks in advance! Would appreciate everyone's recommendations.

You should have purchased a manual machine. ;)

I've had Grinders pods before when visiting family and friends and they seemed to be ok. I doubt the offical Nespresso pods are going to be much better.

    • Manual machine sounds like a bit too much work for a newb at this point… :)

I haven't heard of Grinders before, but that sounds like a good option too. Hopefully cheaper than Nespresso Pods which seem quite dear.

I hated the Grinder's pods and the Vittoria pods. They leak and taste weak.

I found the only substitute for the Nespresso ones are L'Or which are actually pretty good.

      • Thanks - sounds like a few recommendations for L'Or now.

the supermarket pods are fine, otherwise I ended up buying re-fillable pods and using any ground coffee i desired.

    • Good to know! I assume the pods have to say they're Nespresso compatible to work with my machine? Or are they all actually interchangeable? (eg I saw some at woollies that say they only work with Caffitaly machines). Thanks!

      • They have to say they're compatible with Nespresso machines, each different machine has a different shape hole to put the pod in.

        • Makes sense. Thanks!

Yes I've clearly never seen a pod machine or looked at pods. :O

At work we recently switched to refillable SealPod capsules and grind our own coffee.

    • Interesting!

    • Sounds good but you have to keep buying sticker lids which look to be about 15c each. I don't know how much coffee grounds are for a pod worth but if more than 25c it works out dearer (not including the cost of the pod itself). I guess if you're only doing it because you're interested in helping the environment it's worthwhile.

      • +2

Yeah, the environment is one reason. The other is that we prefer the taste.

We bought the "SealPod Five Pack" for Au$92, which means each pod is about $15. It's not the cheapest option, but it was either that or replacing our $3000 espresso machine. Finance thought the Nespresso machine was the cheaper option. They didn't consider our job satisfaction…

Being engineers, we created a little filling station for the 5 pods and we are researching DIY stickers.

For people that grind their own coffee, what coffee do you use and do you find it much better than specialty pod products?

I have tried a lot of coffee pod providers, the supermarket ones (nearly all of them) and the internet only ones. To be honest, I found the highest number colesworth pods to be the best value for money and taste very comparatively than ones 40-50% more expensive (even better in most cases).

I am currently making my way through a Pod & Parcel gift box I was given for Xmas https://www.podandparcel.com.au/collections/gifts-treats/pro…

These are pretty decent and would recommend The Elixir for a morning coffee pod and the La Leyenda for an afternoon or ice coffee pod. Haven't tried the Daddy's Girl which is suppose to be the Padre Coffee pods (leaving those for last!)

    • Great, thanks for the options!

From your experience, which supermarket options did you like best? (Also, do any include mochas or hot chocolate type flavours?! /sweettooth )

I might have to stick to some easy to buy supermarket brands before I explore something like Pod and Parcel, which looks great though!

    • I buy straight from the roaster. http://www.roastingwarehouse.com.au/
I used to work nearby and would walk over at a lunchtime to buy freshly roasted beans.
As a general rule, to ensure optimum freshness in whole beans, ensure the roasting date is stamped on the packet and consume between 7 to 30 days after roasting date.
Keep out of heat and light and store under vacuum to remove the oxygen. All three age the beans further.
If you're going to use a manual or semi-automatic, a grinder is a must. After being ground, the beans will age extremely quickly. Essentially you need to grind, tamp and pour in one stint like you see in cafe's.

You can buy individual 10 pack from nespresso. They start at $6.90 for 10. If you join as a member, u can get 2 free with every 8 from time to time. Hence the cost can be as low as $0.552 per pod.

    • Ah, thanks! Is that 10 of a single flavour though? Or a mixed pack? I could only find the options to buy a single sleeve (10) of one flavour at a time.

      • +1

They don't do a mixed pack.

Just back on the 3rd party pods, another decent place was coffee capsule delights which I tried years ago when they had a deal on OZB. You can get a trial pack of 10 individual pods for $6-$7 a sleeve (plus shipping though) I found the Guatemalan & Kenyan pretty good. I'd recommend the trial pack #4 but check the rest out too.

The aluminum pods work much better than plastic and all other types out there. I've been buying the L'Or coffee pods from supermarkets which is actually on sale at Coles at the moment. Probably one of the better alternatives in terms of price and quality. Works out much cheaper than actual Nespresso pods.

I've never tried re-usable pods mainly because I don't have the time to go through this routine in the mornings.

    • Thanks! I didn't know there were pods from different materials. Are the L'Or ones you refer to made of aluminium?

And I'm guessing you can use them in a Nespresso machine with no drama?

      • +1

Yes they are aluminum pods and work with Nespresso machines no problem.

Usually you can see on the packaging, it says compatible with Nespresso machines.

        • Brilliant! Thank you.

    • +2

Absolutely agree with the aluminium pods working better, L'or if you have a Costco membership can be as cheap as 29 cents a pod.
Also L'or capsules can be recycled through Terracycle if you're interested in that too

      • +2

A tip is to push your emptied pods into a aluminum drink can so they don't fall through the recycling sorting machines at the separation plant!

        • I thought I was the only one that did this sort of thing haha I also keep bottle top lids and then put them in tins to recycle…

  • +2

Your new Nespresso machine should come with a sampler pack included

    • Oh, brilliant!

Is that still the case if it's been purchased from a points system, rather than directly through a retailer?

      Fingers crossed!

      • +1

I don't know. I don't see why it should be any different from a retail pack.

  • +1

I buy whatever is on special at Woolies, and try not to pay more than 40c per pod. There are 3 or 4 brands that could be on special at any one time, L'or is one but I don't remember the others.

I restock at Chadstone when i'm there, otherwise free next day delivery online or through their app is also just as easy.

Arppegio is a favourite of mine….goes well in an Affogato as well
    https://www.nespresso.com/au/en/order/capsules/original/arpe…

Some mornings if i want a longer shot for the cold drive in, i use the Envivo Lungo
    https://www.nespresso.com/au/en/order/capsules/original/envi…

Dharkan, Ristretto & Roma were good to begin with, but quickly fell off for me.

if you are unsure of flavours, best bet is going to one of their stores and trying them out before making a purchase….the $70 pack looks cool, but you;'d be better off buying a sleeve for a select few recommendations from family and friends imo. they are about $9-$10 a sleeve, so you could get 70 pods rather than the 24 that comes with the selection box….does look mighty cool though.

  • I buy Nespresso compatible because of the price point but admittedly find the original Nespresso capsules better tasting but almost double the price. I use the cheaper capsules as a daily option and then prefer to spend my savings on a fresh one at a local cafe as a treat.

My preferences for the compatible are Cafe Royale (was on sale recently for $3.25) and L'or (best I've seen is $3 last year but usual sale price is $4), both of which are aluminum. L'or used to be plastic and I didn't enjoy them as much so I'm super happy they switch to aluminum. I didn't enjoy vittoria or grinders ($4 when on sale) but each to their own taste. I didn't mind the Coles house brand one at $3.70 a box, Woolies also have their own for the same price but I haven't tried it. All are 10 capsules per box.

Also, from memory all machines have a sample box of capsules. At least all five machines I've bought have (presents and for relatives). There's a lot more flavours available online as in store. I used to go in stores and try them. Not sure if they still do but they make you a cup of coffee free of charge (or multiple cups) and you can try whatever capsule you want. My hands down favorite has always been the purple ones which I believe is Arpeggio.

  • I just bought from these guys: https://au.caffe.com (Nes compatible)
I'll post back on taste at some point. Note I'm a stickler for good tasting coffee ;-)
Special price on 50 tester pack at the moment. 38c a pod. Free postage.
