Anyone know of any miles or points bonus promos?

So I don't travel much (ever really), and my two big international trips were with my University so my flights were mostly covered, which means I never looked into collecting points or miles etc…

I am now planning a last minute trip to Morocco / France in April and need to book the flights. Does anyone have advice for credit cards or loyalty programs that give you bonus miles? Any deals on at the moment? A friend of mine mentioned that she signed up for a credit card last year just to get the sign up points, which then gave her a discount on some flights. Worked out cheaper than just buying the flights.

I have no idea where to start! Any help would be appreciated.

Update: Applied for and got the ANZ FF Platinum card. I'll be paying for my hotels and flights with it to meet the spending requirement. I'll save the points for my next trip. It's actually a better deal than my current CBA card too, so that's a bonus. Thanks for the help!

  • Not bad for sign up bonus: Anz FF Black.
Also, you don't have to pay for flights to collect the airline points. If your previous flights were recently you may be able to still claim the points for them.

    • Flights were over a year ago, unfortunately. I had a look at the ANZ FF card and it looked great… until I realized I was below the income requirement. First year out of Uni finally and in my first proper full time job = less than $75,000 in my industry. Thanks though!

      • Try the Anz FF Platinum. Same deal but with 65000 points and $35000 pa income requirement. Still you are going to need to get approved and spend $2500 really quickly to get the points by April.

Unfortunately you are a bit late to do anything for April…

Firstly, the credit card promos usually take up to 90 days to credit the points to your account (and that is after you have applied, been approved, activated the card and spent the required amount on it).

Also, to use points for award seats for international travel, you usually need to book about 11-12 months in advance.

Usually points are best used for premium class travel. If you are planning on flying economy, it won't usually be much of a difference between paying in points (once you convert them to a 'cash' value) or buying a sale fare.

Personally I would just be looking at the cheap economy fares to Europe which have been posted on here recently. Other option might be to apply for a card (such as the one linked above), get some points, convert them to cash or equivalent, and consider that a discount off your airfare.

    • Thanks for the info. I hadn't thought of that. I guess I'll keep an eye out for good deals now though, as I can start saving for potential future trips and accrue some points.

This trip is last minute because I let a friend talk me into it. I'm coming up on the anniversary of starting my job and haven't taken annual leave yet, which is what's prompted me to splurge on a big holiday for the first time. I'm sure once I've started I'll probably get the travel bug though.

      • Get the anz platinum card and put your flights , hotel etc on that card. Once you hit the bonus amount then you’ll have the points for your next trip

      • There is nothing to stop you from buying points now if it's better value…

Or you can just sell (or keep) the points later, it's been pretty stable at 1c per point for a while.

        • There is nothing to stop you from buying points

Except the T&Cs of the frequent flyer program and the fact that you will likely lose all your points and have your account closed if you get caught.

@djkelly69: You can legitimately purchase points from the airlines in some programs.

        • @brih: I realise that, but the reference to 1c per point is pretty clearly a reference to the purchase/sale of QFF or Velocity points between individuals.

        • @djkelly69: Ah yes, fair point
