Setting up Home Theatre System

Hello OzBargaineez,

I am trying to set up my Home Theatre myself, and would like some feedback on the surround system that I need.

To provide a clear scenario I have got a Yamaha HTR-5069 receiver and I am planning to get 2 In-ceiling speakers to cater for Dolby Atmos.
What I am confused about is the 5.1 surround speakers I can use for the best results. I have got a Sony BDVE980W Blu-ray system or a Yamaha NS-P280 speaker set, which is a available for free via relatives. Or do I go for a newer Denon SYS-2020 5.1 speaker system available for $350.

Which one would work well with the receiver I have?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I've just done this as an upgrade from an old LG 5.1.
Could not find a decent, compact speaker system under $1K that would "test" the Yamaha receiver. And the room is quite small, so the large floor standing speakers were crossed off my list by "she who must be obeyed".
That is until I stumbled on a Klipsch Quintet 5 system at HN's for $859.00.
Klipsch release new models every 18 months and this one is being updated. RRP was $1600.00.
Could not be more pleased. Quality is excellent.
All connected to an HTPC (with BluRay) running JRiver Media Centre 23.
Everything controlled using an old Android Tablet and the remote for the Yamaha.
So my advice would be to grab the free speakers and save up a bit more cash to grab something a bit better than the Denon.

    • Thanks for the feedback….I was thinking the same…
Also thinking of using the Sony BDVE980W Blu-ray system instead of the Yamaha NS-P280 speakers….what do u think…

    "available for free"

why not at least try them, you could always spend (waste?) money later

Sony BDVE980W Blu-ray system a Yamaha NS-P280 speaker set, which is a available for free via relatives. Or do I go for a newer Denon SYS-2020 5.1 speaker system available for $350.

For what it's worth all 3 of these options are right at the bottom end of the range, cheap entry-level or below, and are a step down from what would usually be paired with your receiver (which is more low-to-mid range and could easily be paired with $1000 speakers). They won't sound nearly as good as spending $350 on a decent pair of front speakers and skipping the surrounds and even the sub, to give you an idea.

Atmos is not something you'd even bother with at at this end of the range, since it will add almost nothing to the experience. You'd be much happier getting something that sounds loud and clear first.

Try the free ones. If you find it lacking, save up more and go better than those entry-level denons.

None of the speakers you have mentioned are really suited for a decent 5.1 experience.

If you have the Yamaha AMP , I wouldn't bother with the Dolby Atmos speakers at all until you have a decent set of speakers, so save your money for set of 5.1 speakers.

All Dolby Atmos Movies or music will support Dolby Digital 5.1 , so you wont be missing out.

Create a good 5.1 experience first, then see if you feel its lacking the Atmosphere the Dolby Atmos or DTS X adds to the sound field.

    • What specs do i need to look at to select a matching set of speakers for the room?…Any info would be appreciated.

      • Any speakers will be compatible your receiver, but I'd be looking at 5.1 speaker sets that cost between $500 and $1000 all up (for 2 front, 2 rear, centre and subwoofer). Check reviews to find quality stuff. If you find the free set inadequate.

  • If it were me, I'd try the HTR-5069 with the Yamaha speakers and see what it sounds like. If it's lacking, get better speakers. If still lacking, add additional speakers.
