I'm waiting for a deal for Q Acoustics 3050 - gets great reviews. Not sure about KEF, compare to the 3050 equivalent?

    • I am a QA fanboy. Concept 20s in the study and in the kitchen, 2020s in the garage and on the deck. You won't be disappointed :)

Kef q5xx are roughly equivalent to what you are looking for.

But for my money, their LS50s are the absolute standouts. Incredible speakers.

      • I am a QA fanboy.

Have you ever gone to one of their shows and sat in the audience?

        • Yes, his/her living room.

      • +1

Also a big Q Accoustic fanboy, but man, you can't go past KEF either.
This is a great deal, going to talk to the Mrs tonight about it

    • From my reading i'd say the KEF's are better but they are more expensive. Only way to tell is listen to them. Most people seem to be comparing the 3050's to the old Q500 as they are closer in price but driver size the Q750's are the same as the 3050's

    • Still have an older series of KEF 10+ years, going strong but brought it oversea so no local warranty.

    • Likewise!

I think our best bet is a 15-20% off Selby sale (not via ebay).

Cheapest currently is Dennis White at $2,185 for 5.1 (with the 3020's not the 3010's)

Selby is $2,189, but with a 15% off sale (which they sometimes do) would get the whole 5.1 set down to $1,860 which I would jump at. Even 10% off is $1,966.

    • I'm also waiting for the QA3050s and the 3090!

Oh man what a great price for some of those, particularly the 650. That nearly is as good as the old Q series clearout last year.

    • How about comparison with iQ series?

  • +3

if only they had the Kef LS50 wireless

  • +1

Just bought both the wireless and the normal ls50. That's an incredible price.

    • Damn that can't have been cheap! Bet they're amazing though, i'm stuck with my Q100's with my budget

      • Honestly the wireless model is the best speaker I've heard for the price by so far it isn't funny.

Now I wanna off my silver Q7 atmos system to go 4 LS50s in surround cause of this price :(

Even more annoying as I just got the matching sub after all these years in silver too.

        • I'm glad I found this thread. While the wireless LS50s aren't on offer and are totally out of my price bracket right now I'll keep an eye on them for a few years until they drop in price. I've got the active Audio Engine A5+ for now and they are great.

FYI, the prices seem to be much lower in other countries.

        • @carleast:
Thanks for the article, was a very eye opening read

        • @carleast: Explains why they are so much cheaper from NZ than buying local, shitty distributor

    • you bought them with the discount? or in another store?

      • +1

Locally in SA, price matched interstate though.

  • +2

Their feedback isn't too flash though.

    • +2

The reviews are very average and it annoys me that the seller doesn't specify the actual model number. (Though the SKU does align with the model numbers presented above).

      • They aren't responding to any message yet, I'll reluctantly pass.

    • Was seriously tempted. After reading their feedback, I pass.

      • They just responded to me a day later regarding a few queries. They believe in their words that they cover the GST. Hmmm yeah I think I'll just keep my money. They also have misleading photos and descriptions.

  • Asking a silly question, would the Q550 or Q750 require a sub woofer if setup as a part of a home theater? Also do KEF do subwoofers that would match to these speakers or is there enough bass in the floor speakers?

    • +2

Every home theatre system should have a separate Subwoofer.

You don't need to match brands as crucially though.

    • +1

Yes as scuderiarmani said you definitely need a sub. I'd recommend staying away from KEF subs, they're not bad but they're overpriced for what they are. If you can afford it stick to brands that specialise in Sub's like SVS, REL, Velodyne, Rythmik etc.

      • I agree I purchased a kef sub to match the white 650s and is no match for my older sub which I have to hide now.

  • But would the speakers attract the import duty plus processing fee plus GST on top of the previous two charges if the price is over $1000?

    • That's a good question.

Would essentially wipe out the 20% which would stop me.

    • If they caught it yes it would. Still a chance it'll get through without it

  • I am in the market of the kef ls50. I think this price is for a pair of ls50? It's a real bargain! but it's based in New Zealand and i assume we need to pay GST on top?

    • Seemingly $250 as it'd be listed at the full price top.

    • Yes it's a pair and yes if customs look into it they'll bill you for GST. But I've bought a few things over the years from overseas that were just over the $1000 limit and haven't been billed yet.

  • tempting, that Q650c basically half price comparing to what Aus dealers are selling here.

  • How is the bookshelf compare with Infinity Reference 162 for music?

    • I'd go the Infinity if you're looking at the Q150's. If you're talking LS50 then no question the KEF's

I have the Kef Q100 and Reference 162's and personally I much prefer the 162's. The Q100 aren't bad at all they're just more expensive with less bass and harsher treble to my ears. The Infinity are much larger physically though, something to take into account.

      • Thanks I tried Infinity I like it but no chance to try Q100.

  • Kef warranty is not transferable between countries. I know.. I got the ls50w and asked about it. They will honour parts for the warranty period but not labour. Items from NZ will incur a service fee from the Australian distributer

  • Can anyone recommend a full 5.1 set up + receiver for $1k~?
