I Bought a Stolen Phone?

Hi, so i bought an iPhone on eBay. It is iCloud locked and when I search up the imei on imeipro, it shows as lost/stolen. I have opened a case with eBay and will be charged back but what do I do with the phone? I don't want to give a stolen phone back to the seller. I checked on the ACCC.gov.au imei thing and it shows as unblocked, could it have been stolen overseas?

  • Whats the sellers feedback like? They may have been scammed too.

I think if you want your cash back your going to have to send it back.

Pro tip: don't buy a high value item from someone with zero feedback.

      • Oh for god sakes…No feedback?

        How much was the phone?

You do realise the seller could've given you a IMEI of any iPhone. Maybe his/her own?

Drop it to your local police station along with a email trail from eBay.

If they try and get out of it, explain to them nicely that you are trying to do the right thing by handing over stolen/lost property.

  • Call police non-emergency line for your state. 131 444 if in SA.

    • what else would you do with stolen property?

Paypal should most probably side with you, the ebay seller who has no feedback would now be trying to empty funds from PP account and starting 'to run away with the money', so to speak.

lodge a dispute ASAP… that's probably the first thing you'd need to do if you want your money back. You can submit the IMEI to Paypal as proof that the iphone is locked and isn't as described.

I think PayPal keeps the money for a time before its cleared

Yep, hand it to the police, get their receipt and forward that to PayPal, they'll refund your transaction. Done.

don't hand over anything until your snad dispute has been finalised and in your favour.

  • If you take to the police you will loose your money probably. Just call paypal and ask what you should do.
