i stopped looking at Murphy's monthly deals since the $10 beer disappeared.. loll might have to resume looking again…

    • They disappeared? There's one or two $10 six packs most months.

      • +3

well the decent beers did … i noticed few mid strength ones but nothing that was great for a fair while

        • Fair call, they generally haven't been great.

  • I can recommend this beer. Got some a couple of weeks ago on the last $10 deal and it's a really good beer if you like an IPA.

    • +5

I'd say that if you like a mild American Pale Ale with a lighter body, you might like this beer. If you like IPAs, you'll probably be disappointed. It has little of the maltiness or bitterness of an IPA. In fact, it's much less bitter than Monteith's own American Pale Ale. There's two meanings of XPA and this one is more the eXtra Pale Ale rather than the eXtra Pale Ale.

      • +8

From what I can tell, XPA just means 'standard australian pale that we chucked a handful of Galaxy in'

        • +6

Spare a thought for the geniuses in the marketing team who have to decide whether to call it a Pacific Ale or XPA before going to lunch!

          @dazweeja:

They're sounding a tad smarter than the guys who decided to release Monteith's "mistake" beers, Pointers and Southern.
..I think they tasted absolutely horrendous and could easily understand why Dan's ended up with huge consignments. Hopefully this brew is better!

Good point. My preference is for the lighter end of things when drinking more than one or 2, and I'll go for something heavier if I'm nursing just one (or, go on, make it 2). This is session-able, for sure.

        • +1

I'm the same. You'll probably like the new James Squire Swindler recipe then. Neither of those beers will win any awards but they're some of the more drinkable at the cheaper end of the market.

Radler being classed as beer is a tragedy. Drinking the stuff is almost as bad.

      • Radlers have their place!

  • I've grabbed a few sixers of this recently. Wasn't expecting a lot but was pleasently surprised. Quite a nice drink and can't go wrong for that price. I was sad yesterday when I went in and my local store was out. So instead I got a sixer of the Cricketers Arms Session Ale $12. Haven't tried it yet though

    • I picked up both; the Cricketer's Arms is much better.

      • yep I prefer the Cricketers Arms as well. BWS had an in store special on them for $10 a few weeks ago incl the full strength tins

  • Good for $10, but don't expect miracles. I found it a bit unbalanced, just a little "off".

    • Is it sweat, like sugar taste? Because there is 5g sugar in each 100 g as per the label on the bottle. Ciders are like 10g sugar.

      • +1

Your sweat is sweet? These critters will love you

        • -1

Yeah I avoid sugar as much as I can. But, sometimes I may take it in coffee and then I get high (literally).

  • Big IPA fan but didnt have much love for these last time i tried them but definitely will grab a 6 pack at this price

  • I've been enjoying the Dan Murphy beer specials - but haven't figured out - how often do they change? Are they at this price for a calendar month, and then they change them around? Have been enjoying this one and the Cricketers Arms.

    • They usually change each month but this xpa has been rolled over for another month. I didnt mind this, but my local has coopers clear for $10 and tgey are going down nicely in this heat

      • Good to know, thanks!

People now take beer very seriously don't they?

    I've had good beer.
    I've had shite beer.

    I've never had unbalanced beer.

    • +1

Hah hah! I guess it depends on your definition. And I like all types of beers, and am serious about them. Not wine snob wise. But I guess I'd classify a beer as unbalanced if say it was thin tasting/not rich but high ABV, like they just got the high ABV effect by adding sugar rather than more wort. I did have one recently I felt that was the case.

    • +2

"Balance" in beer is complex topic which is often presented too simply. People talk about malt (sweet) vs hops (bitter), but even when you make it that simple you can't really talk about "balance" without specifying a style - consider a stout and an IPA at the same ABV - they'll have similar levels of malt sweetness, but one is supposed to be sweet with minor bitterness mostly from toasted specialty malt, and the other is supposed to be bitter - bitter enough to overwhelm the sweetness even in a bigger boozier beer.

This all breaks down completely if you want to talk about sour beers, or farmhouse ales, or gose. Balance there is clearly determined by other factors. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist - in much the same way as a meal can be too salty, or too spicy, or spoilt by the overenthusiastic application of a herb, a beer can be constructed with poor balance between its various flavours (flavours which can include far more than just "malty sweet" and "hoppy bitter")

This beer is terrible. Tried it when it was $13, do not recommend.

Monteith's mostly make pretty good beers, especially for the price, but this one is no good.

    • +1

      Monteith's black is awesome.

      • Yeah, it's a great go-to dark lager that's not too heavy.

  • +2

This beer is shyte. I was super happy the $10 beers were back, bought 2 packs. Can't stand them!

    • Have bought 18 packs and loving them

  • +2

This is alright, but even at 50% more, the Brooklyn Lager 6 pack for $15 is so much better IMO.

    • What's the expiry on the Dan Murphy's Brooklyn Lager? I've only seen nearly 1 year stock

  • -1

Looks like this beer has really divided opinion.

If you like beer with a bit of malt body/sweetness, do not buy this beer.

If you like beer with some citrus/fruity hops and a thin body (and don't mind a mild dry/cidery taste, a la Stone & Wood Pacific Ale), you might like this beer. Or at least get your $10 value out of it ;)

  • Had this beer a number of times in NZ - I thought it was pretty good - and for once a beer cheaper in Oz than NZ so must be worth being ozbargained!

    • I just got back from NZ drinking pints for $6NZD. What's wrong with Australia why do we pay so much.

  • Best value 6 pack going at the moment I have bought several

  • Bought a pack. The first two went well, the rest are still resting in the fridge.

  • +2

Well I bought three six packs through Click & Collect for $30 - I was surprised when they wheeled out three cartons!! I told them I only ordered three six packs and they said it was cartons in their system so I should just take it.. I feel dirty.

Their Black Beer is great and $50 at BWS right now.
I just got Dan's to price match and got a case of their Black for $44 somehow.
