Which Used Car to buy?

Dear Friends,

I am new to Sydney here from last 6 months . I am on a 457 visa. I will be here for another 3-4years and would go back to my country.

I am planning to buy a used car for weekend travels with family of 3 including a baby of 3yr.

As I am new to australia, I am not able to find out which car/year / kms to buy.

My budget is $10000. I need to sell it back in 3-4 yrs and looking for a good resale value.

I think I would drive around 500 kms per month on an average.

Also, if I buy from Private sales like gumtree, car sales etc. How Do I verify if the car is not stollen / written off ?

So please help me identify which car/model. thanks in advance.

Only 100kms per MONTH?? Fark, you're better of getting an Uber rather than paying rego and insurance to drive so sparingly.

    • updated.. i think around 500 is an average

    • Does uber provide baby seats?

Yes, but you need to order it when you request a car. And i think it's under the UberX??? Cant remember fully. My wife ordered and Uber with a child car seat…

Not sure about the car but to answer your second question you get the VIN number of the vehicle and pay a few dollars for whats called a REVS check or maybe its PPSR check now.

    https://www.ppsr.gov.au/how-quick-motor-vehicle-search

Here it is. PSSR check. VIN number and $3.40 and it gives you everything you need.

    • And don't pay any extra for a PPSR purporting to give you extra information. They are a rip off.

      Awesome,.. Many thanks

How do I verify if the car is not stolen / written off?

Do a to ppsr check, it should show if the car has been in major accidents, stolen, written off and/or has finance owing on it.
A used Yaris would be my first choice, these hold their values well, or maybe an i20 (demo or even new if you can stretch your budget a bit).
    Good luck

If you are going to buy from a private seller, the following things is a must do.
    1. Check the vehicles PPSR CHECK, make sure it not been written off or has finance owning on it and have had big accident.
    2. If you don't know anything about cars, a local mobile mechanic can inspect the car for you for less $250 and saves future costly repairs. I highly recommend this.
    3. Check the cars service history and log books. a car with good service history and log book will a have a great resale value.

I would go for the Toyota Yaris, just becuase it is more reliable and will have great resale value.

    • Thank you so much. this is really helpful

Plenty to choose from. Pick something common. Your poll has two different sized vehicles. A Ford Fiesta would be a better match to the other two size wise.

Mazda, Toyota will probably have the best resale value, but in reality a $10k car has already had a big hit of depreciation and after another 3-4 years there won't be a lot of difference between one with poorer resale. Maybe $1k at most. Japanese or Korean would be my pick, Mazda, Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, maybe Nissan probably not a Ford and def not a Holden in that size/price bracket. Possibly Subaru, but they can get a bit pricey to service when older. Definitely not a European in that price bracket unless you are a motoring enthusiast.

looks like the first thing you did on landing in Oz is created an Ozbargain account. :)

With that low kms per yr n given you are going to sell in 3-4yrs - can consider 5-7k car as well i.e bit older and more mileage. Prefer to have 1-2 prev. owners given you will be selling. Also consider corolla

Njoy ur stay in Oz - its a beautiful country!

Toyota has the best resale reputation.

Hyundai and Kia are also options offering good value with possibly some warranty remaining.

Stay away from any Ford with a "Powershift" gearbox.

The most popular class is in the Corolla/i30/Mazda 3 etc so it will have the best re-sale when you leave.

Thank you all for support. Much appreciated. Have a great day.

A corolla is the best choice for your circumstances.

The Yaris and the Mazda 2 are tiny vehicles with little protection. They won't fair well in a collision with a vehicle in a bigger class.

Totally agree on small cars - Sydney roads are narrow and my small vehicle was a magnet for bumps. You will be bullied and harassed by larger vehicles, unless you are a confident and aggressive driver. Toyotas, Mazdas, Hondas and Hyundais probably hold the best value. Avoid the smallest class on each make (Mazda2, Honda Jazz, Nissan Micra etc) as they are often the cheapest built with least mechanical strength.

      • Not just comparatively weaker structures but also lacking in some of the safety technologies, such as full length side curtain airbags, etc. If you have a precious cargo onboard, you should definitely look for something similar to a corolla in size.

  • If you've got a kid (plus their seat, pram, and all the other kid stuff) the focus would probably be better out of the three you have got in the poll in terms of space. However, I think you should consider a Honda Jazz. They're really roomy, economical, and reliable. Plus being a smaller car, they will be cheaper to register and possibly insure.

I would suggest Toyota Corolla and Mazda 3, both are good car with good resell value.

if you want a bit of speed and bit more stylish choose Mazda 3, but Corolla keep its value better.
