I'm not sure if it applies to this luggage or Oz but you might want to be aware of non-removable li-ion battery issues if you were thinking of ever checking this suitcase in (admittedly it's advertised as a carry-on piece).

Worth noting Smart Luggage is banned on most US airlines: https://www.forbes.com/sites/grantmartin/2018/01/18/airline-…

    • Actually, it's almost all airlines.

Smart Luggage (with non-removable batteries) are not allowed on IATA airlines (which is basically 80%+ of all airlines in the world).

Weight when empty 4.4kg…carry on limit is usually 7kg. Doesn't allow much for your own stuff.

  • probably a better solution to get the Xiaomi power bank 20,000mah and sticking it into normal hand carry luggage. Much lighter, much cheaper and more room for other stuff.
The tracking capability is basically useless unless you have a SIM card and plan in it and unless you have global roaming on it that costs a fortune, then you can't track anyway.

  • Grubs working in luggage handling will still pilfer it

If battery is non removable, they are banned as carry on AND as checked luggage on Australian airlines

    • Source?

I know batteries are not allowed in checked, but carry on? My laptop battery isn’t removable. My phone battery isn’t removable… And i know batteries of a certain type and over a certain size are not allowed. Im just curious at this being checked baggage and not allowed due to battery…

      • Only talking about the smart bags in this instance. If the battery is not removable, it cannot travel in the cabin or in the hold.
If the battery is removable, it needs to be taken out, be within acceptable limits and travel in the cabin

  • Thanks OP, but I'll wait for v 2.0, the one with the motorised wheels that follows you around the airport like a puppy dog

    • Thats what children are for

  • Not made by Xiaomi so not buying.

    • Not powered by Eneloops, so I’m not buying…

Can't be taken on most airlines as carry on or checked-in including Qantas and Virgin Australia as battery is not removable.

    • Cheers for the source. Interesting stuff. Would be keen to find out of this suitcase has a removable battery.

What would be good is a suitcase with a removable backup battery that you could take out and use in the plane without having to get your whole suitcase down or run a cable up to it…

  • The battery on this one is not readily removed. You can remove the entire electronics pack under the lining. You will need a screwdriver - instructions on the BlueSmart web site.

Other smart bags have a battery pack which just clips out. But in any case - a smart bag is just dumb without the battery to run the GPS tracking etc.

This article https://www.businessinsider.com.au/airlines-announce-smart-l… states that QF has a total ban, but VA allows in cabin ( as they do with any other battery)

Actually reading the Qantas Dangerous goods page on the website is unclear on the removal aspect. So I wrote to QF and awaiting advice.

And the "remove battery and carry as hand luggage" policy makes no sense. Same battery, same cabin, just taken out of teh bag it was designed to fit, put it in my briefcase and NOW we are all safer?

I bought one of the BlueSmart as a gift on December for a Feb birthday. Its still unboxed. I just wrote to Catch asking for a return/refund. So lets see what happens. and advice? "Goods not fit for the purpose"?
