Habit number one is only buying e-books when on sale or free.

Lesson 1 : don't look at OzB, cos people here aren't high rollers

      • +1

High roller = person who gambles or spends large sums of money.
OzB Social currency is higher than monetary addiction.

      • +4

Lesson 2: Don't browse Whirlpool because everyone is on 200k a year, has no debts, owns multiple properties with yachts and private marinas, and knows everything about anything and will belittle those that ask for help.

  • +6

Classic book. But very conservative old-school mentality which may or may not apply to this modern world and the job/situation you are in.

    • +4

Don't worry, the ancient art of war written over 2000 years ago by Sun Tzu still popular among those 'High Rollers'

      • +2

Actually interestingly enough, "Art of War" is probably closer to "Art of Game Theory" once you extrapolate the principles out of it. Still relevant today. 7 Habits however, are more based upon social standards which has changed considerably in the past 30 years.

        • +4

This get me thinking the habit of technology, technology did help us get people from further away closer, but driving people closer to us further away…

        • War is a game or a game is a war

        • +3

@Jamesx: War is a game for the people who start conflicts, and send other people's children to the front line.

        • -1

          @Cluster:

War is a gain for the people who start conflicts, and send other people's children to the front line.

A game without gain is pointless.

      • +15

Straight out of university, I was given a copy of Art Of War by my manager at a… steel goods manufacturing company. Think verandas, carports, gutters, down pipes. He gave it to all the recent hires at the company, and we were all confused how this was meant to help us develop a slightly better product than the competition had.

I now know not to eat supplies left by the retreating enemy, for they are probably poisoned. Changed my life.

It did well for Covey at least…

And with all other "7…" books he created after learning the trick.

    • Yes, there probably is one book that is the best, but which one?

      spoiler alert!

    • Arguably, Trump doesn't do any of this seven.. Still "successful" (to his base anyway). lol

      • +1

        SO which politician does?

        • Strategically oriented politicians do. Yes, they exist - arguably Obama, Current Chinese President Xi, Turnbull (except being backstabbed by his party). Includes the classic politicians - JFK, Churchill, Hawke, Howard etc.
It's not a matter of Liberal vs Conservative Pollies either - It's really how they approach life and their leadership of their respective countries.

        • @bchliu: LOL… Politics.
Being "strategically orientated" isn't necessarily a plus, unless principle is attached to it somewhere. To suggest Trump bereft of strategic thought a bit naive, or ignorant. Perhaps too, forgetting how Turnbull was first elected to parliament, and then rose through the ranks of the Liberal Party. He's very handy with a knife.
          But otherwise, spot on!!! Lol.

  • 25th Anniversary Edition

25 years ago there was no computers, no phones, no tinder.
this is a fiction book now.

    • +6

      No tinder? Lol

      tinder

      Profile picture checks out.

Excellent book - I try to apply these principles in my life and come back to it again and again.

I would have bought if I didn't already own copies in various formats.

The book was an output of Covey's PhD thesis. His literature research found that the success literature for the first 200 years following the birth of the US was based on character, whereas more recently it shifted to techniques. His habits revert back to principles of character.

  • +4

ah, the book that everyone's boss tells them to read and then never follows up and practices it.

  • +2

Great book, great bargain…it’s not dated at all as the habits aren’t about social trends or fashions, but about principles. There’s an enormous amount of value in this book if you take the time to read it …

  • All proceeds from this book going to keep the authors breathing machine going

    • +2

      He's already passed away.

  • Shame it's not free, otherwise I would have added to my list :)

Best bit of advice when I did a 7 habits course 13 years ago

"You can't control the situation, but you can control your response to the situation".

Very powerful if you can put it into practice

    • +1

“There is a simple realization from which all personal improvement and growth emerges. This is the realization that we, individually, are responsible for everything in our lives, no matter the external circumstances. We don’t always control what happens to us. But we always control how we interpret what happens to us, as well as how we respond. Whether we consciously recognize it or not, we are always responsible for our experiences. It’s impossible not to be. Choosing to not consciously interpret events in our lives is still an interpretation of the events of our lives…..”
― Mark Manson, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life

"Whether we consciously recognize it or not, we are always responsible for our experiences."

Sage advice for a rape victim…

        • +1

I agree with your point, not sure sarcasm in relation to rape is a good choice though.

        • Actually really good advice imo.

        • A corollary of which is “think, before do.“ The very first lesson in Book of Genesis - a really old book.

That sounds like something from stoic philosophy. Very good!

  • It shows 5.99 USD for me (followed the US link as I have US registered device). Is it me or did it expire?

    • I get the same. It looked fine when I opened the link, but went up to $5.99 after I clicked 1-click purchase.

      • Hmm, it shows up as $1.19 in incognito so must be an account issue?

    • Yeah mine still showing $1.19 too. Sold!

    • I also get 5.99 as well.

Effective people don't buy these books…

    • +1

Effective people buy these books for $1.49 rather than RRP.

    • +2

This is the opposite of those million-and-one self-help books. It refutes the modern "one weird trick" techniques and focuses instead on actual character. It's also based on an actual research-heavy doctoral thesis studying hundreds of self-help books and analysing the effective ones.

The author is one of a few success writers who's actually successful himself, and in my experience, this is one of the few self-help books that actual successful people (business owners and such) recommend.

  • Step 1: Don't procrastinate and think self-help books are an answer to your problems.

  • Lesson #1, Never buy RRP. sadly mine shows full rrp. no discounted price :-/

This is an OCR'd book without any of the diagrams.

    • Thank you for sharing. I decided to purchase this still, because I have read that version, and it has made references to diagrams that isn't included. I have not yet finished the book but there are many good lessons so far.

  • Can’t seem to buy it. Says it’s not available.

If anyone wants to see a quick 6 minute overview of the concept of the book then you might like this animated YouTube video…

This particular publisher actually does some other good 'overview' animations for those too time poor to read the full books…
